Abstract: Abstract of the thesis entitled "Mobility and Radio Resource Management in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks" submitted by Xiaoshan Liu for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in October 2006 Future generation wireless communication systems are characterized by ubiquitous access and Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. They consist of IP-based heterogeneous wireless networks (HWN) with overlaid coverage to provide users with a broad range of access services. In a wireless communication system, mobility and radio resource management are essential system functions to support seamless global roaming. However, the functions in HWN systems are very different from those employed in traditional homogeneous wireless networks, and presents new challenges. First, the complexity and large dimension of an HWN system adds to the latency of signaling when signals traverse the component networks. When mobile users make handoffs in HWN, long handoff delay and heavy packet loss will be caused by this prolonged signaling exchange, seriously compromising QoS. Second, every component network is deployed following its own architecture and the characteristics of its particular technology. Therefore, the underlying radio resource management (RRM) functions need to be coordinated in admission control to improve users' experience and system performance. In this study, we propose methods in architecture, protocol and algorithms to solve the above problems in an HWN system. We first introduce a mobility management architecture with an Edge Mobility Agent (EMA) to improve the performance of handoffs between different networks. In the architecture, an EMA is introduced at the edge of the low-tier network to provide a transition area for handoff signaling exchange that effectively eliminates delay and packet loss during a vertical handoff. We also propose a Service Differentiated Handoff Protocol (SDHP) to handle handoffs between cells of the same network. In SDHP, we classify connections' QoS requirements into two classes and propose to use different handoff schemes to handle these connections to satisfy their different QoS requirements. With SDHP, we strike a balance between users' handoff experience and efficiency of radio resource utilization. To optimize radio resource utilization and access selection, we propose two joint admission control schemes to allocate connection requests to different component networks. In one scheme, the bandwidth to be allocated for each user is adaptive to the current resource utilization of every access network. A profit function is established to evaluate the profits gained from a handoff and the target network is selected accordingly. In another scheme, we formulate the joint admission control problem as a Semi- Markov Decision Process, and employ bandwidth adaptation to improve users' experience. We propose to use multi-agent system reinforcement learning to optimize SMDP. With this method, the system will learn an optimal policy from its experience that matches the characteristics of system capacity and user traffic, and maximizes a policy-based system reward. With the above proposals in architecture, protocol and algorithms, we provide a solution combining mobility and radio resource management and realize seamless global roaming with QoS support in HWN systems. Book Ultra Dense Heterogeneous Networks

Download or read book Ultra Dense Heterogeneous Networks written by Wen Sun and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Driven by the ever-increasing amount of mobile data, cellular networks evolve from small cell network to ultra-dense heterogeneous networks, to provide high system capacity and spectrum efficiency. By bringing base stations (BSs) to the approximate spatial scale and number magnitude, ultra-dense heterogeneous networks would definitely bring unprecedented paradigm changes to the network design. Firstly, along with densification of small cells, inter-cell interference becomes severe and may deteriorate performance of mobile users. Assigning network resources including bandwidth and time slots, while avoiding interference, desires serious consideration. Secondly, the coverage area of BSs becomes small and irregular, resulting in much frequent and complicated handovers when mobile users move around. How to ensure continuous communication and implement effective mobility management, and inter-cell resource allocation and cooperation, remains a challenging issue. Thirdly, such dynamic change in spatial dimension enables us to re-investigate available and ongoing communications and networking techniques, such as massive MIMO, CoMP, millimeter waves (mmWaves), carrier aggregation, full duplex radio, and D2D communications. To address the aforementioned challenging research issues, this book will investigate the service and QoE provisioning in ultra-dense heterogeneous networks. In particular, firstly we introduce ultra-dense heterogeneous networks by careful definition regarding spatial deployment, generic characteristics, and requirements of ultra-dense heterogeneous networks in order to ensure QoE of mobile users. Secondly, we depict the resource management among small cells in close proximity, mobility management for mobile users (address the superfrequent handovers), and interference management (dealing with the interference due to frequency-reuse in the vicinity). Thirdly, we study the enabling factors, and the integration of ultra-dense heterogeneous networks with enabling technologies, such as massive-MIMO, cloud-RAN, mmWaves, D2D, IoT. Finally, we conclude the book and indicate future directions and challenges"--

Book Resource Management in Wireless Networking

Download or read book Resource Management in Wireless Networking written by Mihaela Cardei and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-07-06 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the pattern of the Internet growth in popularity, started in the early 1990s, the current unprecedented expansion of wireless technology promises to have an even greater effect on how people communicate and interact, with considerable socio-economic impact all over the world. The driving force behind this growth is the remarkable progress in component miniaturization, integration, and also devel- ments in waveforms, coding, and communication protocols. Besides established infrastructurebased wireless networks (cellular, WLAN, sat- lite) ad-hoc wireless networks emerge as a new platform for distributed applications and for personal communication in scenarios where deploying infrastructure is not feasible. In ad-hoc wireless networks, each node is capable of forwarding packets on behalf of other nodes, so that multi-hop paths provide end-to-end connectivity. The increased flexibility and mobility of ad-hoc wireless networks are favored for appli- tions in law enforcement, homeland defense and military. In a world where wireless networks become increasingly interoperable with each other and with the high-speed wired Internet, personal communication systems will transform into universal terminals with instant access to variate content and able of handle demanding tasks, such as multimedia and real-time video. With users roaming between networks, and with wide variation in wireless link quality even in a single domain, the communications terminal must continue to provide a level of Quality of Service that is acceptable to the user and conforms to a contracted Service Level Agreement.

Book Modeling and Design of Next generation Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

Download or read book Modeling and Design of Next generation Heterogeneous Wireless Networks written by Ahmed H. Zahran and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The service integration of different wireless access technologies is envisioned as a viable approach to accommodate the expected increase in the demand on wireless resources. This vision originates a new networking paradigm that introduces a new vertical mobility dimension, which significantly magnifies the mobility impact on the system performance and creates new challenging design issues that necessitate adopting novel innovative approaches to handle the inherent system heterogeneity.Clearly, vertical mobility is completely dismissed in the current mobility models that are primarily developed for homogeneous cellular systems. Hence, the development of new mobility models that consider vertical mobility in heterogeneous systems evolves as a crucial requirement for proper system design and performance evaluation. These models should satisfy general mobility modeling requirements such as flexibility and analytical tractability. More importantly, they should accommodate the correlation between the mobile terminal (MT) cell residence time (CRT) and the durations spent by the MT under the umbrellas of different technological coverage cocktails. In this dissertation, we developed a novel CRT mobility modeling framework that realizes the aforementioned modeling requirements. This framework is used to develop mobility models for two-tier and n-tier heterogeneous systems. Based on these models, we developed generic performance evaluation frameworks to estimate several salient performance metrics. Additionally, we employed the developed mobility modeling and performance evaluation frameworks to study several interesting network planning and dimensioning problems. In a complementary research direction, we studied vertical mobility management in heterogeneous systems. The asymmetric nature of vertical mobility is a novel design challenge that invalidates the traditional handoff decision mechanisms, which are based on comparing the signal strength from different base Stations of the same network. Hence, the vertical handoff decision should adopt novel mechanisms that consider a predetermined set of user preferences and network design goals. Consequently, we developed a novel flexible vertical handoff approach that, can adapt to different operating parameters such as, user mobility, required handoff delay, and different application requirements.

Book Mobile Networks and Management

Download or read book Mobile Networks and Management written by Kostas Pentikousis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-05-10 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The First International ICST Conference on Mobile Networks and Management (MONAMI) was held in Athens, Greece during October 13–14, 2009, hosted by the National Technical University of Athens. Through what we hope will be a long-lasting series of events, this new international conference aims at bringing together top - searchers, academics, and practitioners specializing in the area of mobile network management. Multiaccess and resource management, mobility management, and n- work management have emerged as core topics in the design, deployment, and ope- tion of current and future networks. Yet, they are treated as separate, isolated domains with very little interaction between the experts in these fields and lack cro- pollination. MONAMI 2009 offered the opportunity to leading researchers, industry professionals, and academics to meet and discuss the latest advances in these areas and present results related to technologies for true plug-and-play networking, efficient use of all infrastructure investments, and access competition. MONAMI 2009 featured eight full papers and five short papers, which were - lected after a thorough peer-review process based on their relevance to the scope of the conference and their technical merit. The overall acceptance rate was 50%. The contributing authors covered a range of topics in mobile networks and their mana- ment that are currently of high interest in the wireless research area.

Book Mobility Management and Vertical Handover Decision Making in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

Download or read book Mobility Management and Vertical Handover Decision Making in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks written by Mariem Zekri and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobility management over heterogeneous wireless networks is becoming a major interest area as new technologies and services continue to proliferate within the wireless networking market. In this context, seamless mobility is considered to be crucial for ubiquitous computing. Service providers aim to increase the revenue and to improve users' satisfaction. However there are still many technical and architectural challenges to overcome before achieving the required interoperability and coexistence of heterogeneous wireless access networks. Indeed, the context of wireless networks is offering multiple and heterogeneous technologies (e.g. 2G to 4G, WiFi, Wimax, TETRA,...). On the one hand, this rich environment allows users to take profit from different capacities and coverage characteristics. Indeed, this diversity can provide users with high flexibility and allow them to seamlessly connect at any time and any where to the access technology that best fits their requirements. Additionally, cooperation between these different technologies can provide higher efficiency in the usage of the scarce wireless resources offering more economic systems for network providers. On the other hand, the heterogeneity of technologies and architectures and the multiplication of networks and service providers creates a complex environment where cooperation becomes challenging at different levels including and not limited to mobility management, radio resource provisioning, Quality of Service and security guarantees. This thesis is focusing on mobility management and mainly on decision making for Vertical handover within heterogeneous wireless network environments. After the analysis of the related state of the art, we first propose a reputation based approach that allows fast vertical handover decision making. A decision making scheme is then built on that approach. Network's reputation, is a new metric that can be gathered from previous users' experiences in the networks. We show that it is an efficient construct to speed up the vertical handover decision making thanks to anticipation functionalities. While the main objective remains guaranteeing the best Quality of Service and optimal radio resource utilization, economical aspects have also to be considered including cost minimization for users and revenue maximization for network providers. For this aim, we propose, in the second part of the thesis, a game theoretic based scheme that allows maximizing benefits for both networks and users. In this solution, each available network plays a Stackelberg game with a finite set of users, while users are playing a Nash game among themselves to share the limited radio resources. A Nash equilibrium point, that maximizes the user's utility and the service provider revenue, is found and used for admission control and vertical handover decision making. The analyses of the optimal bandwidth/prices and the revenue at the equilibrium point show that there are some possible policies to use according to user's requirements in terms of QoS and to network capacities. For instance, we pointed out that networks having same capacities and different reputation values should charge users with different prices which makes reputation management very important to attract users and maximize networks' revenue. In the third part of this thesis, we provide and discuss two different architectural and implementation solutions on which our proposed vertical handover decision mechanisms can be integrated. The first proposed architecture is a centralized one. It is based on the IEEE 802.21 standard to which some extensions are proposed. The second proposed architecture is distributed. It is based on an overlay control level composed of two virtualization layers able to make reasoning on behalf of physical entities within the system. This architecture allows higher flexibility especially for loosely coupled interconnected networks.
