Download or read book Memory for Odors written by Frank R. Schab and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The power of odors to unlock human memory is celebrated in literature and anecdote, but poorly documented by science. Odors -- perhaps more than other stimuli -- are widely believed to evoke vivid and complex past experiences easily. Yet in contrast to the frequency with which odors are thought to evoke memories of the past, scientific evidence is thus far scant. For years, voluminous data have been collected on odor sensitivity, whereas relatively few studies exist on memory for odors per se. Moreover, the memory data that do exist are thus far only poorly integrated with the most modern attitudes on human memory. The major goal of this volume is to point the way toward a better state of affairs, one in which the study of odor memory is legitimatized as a proper specialization and is informed by the most promising ideas in the mainstream study of memory. This volume explores three tendencies in modern memory theory that have not yet sufficiently penetrated the odor-memory work: memory coding, memory and knowledge, and implicit and explicit memory.

Download or read book Smellosophy written by A. S. Barwich and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An NRC Handelsblad Book of the Year “Offers rich discussions of olfactory perception, the conscious and subconscious impacts of smell on behavior and emotion.” —Science Decades of cognition research have shown that external stimuli “spark” neural patterns in particular regions of the brain. We think of the brain as a space we can map: here it responds to faces, there it perceives a sensation. But the sense of smell—only recently attracting broader attention in neuroscience—doesn’t work this way. So what does the nose tell the brain, and how does the brain understand it? A. S. Barwich turned to experts in neuroscience, psychology, chemistry, and perfumery in an effort to understand the mechanics and meaning of odors. She discovered that scents are often fickle, and do not line up with well-defined neural regions. Upending existing theories of perception, Smellosophy offers a new model for understanding how the brain senses and processes odors. “A beguiling analysis of olfactory experience that is fast becoming a core reference work in the field.” —Irish Times “Lively, authoritative...Aims to rehabilitate smell’s neglected and marginalized status.” —Wall Street Journal “This is a special book...It teaches readers a lot about olfaction. It teaches us even more about what philosophy can be.” —Times Literary Supplement

Book Cases on Innovative and Successful Uses of Digital Resources for Online Learning

Download or read book Cases on Innovative and Successful Uses of Digital Resources for Online Learning written by Sullivan, Pamela and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-03-11 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education at all levels will continue to be dominated by technology for the foreseeable future. The rush to respond to the health concerns of the pandemic led to a mass adoption of online learning tools without careful consideration and placement within a conceptual framework that would have occurred prior to adoption in best practice scenarios. Cases on Innovative and Successful Uses of Digital Resources for Online Learning evaluates and describes successful initiatives in remote and hybrid learning during the pandemic disruption to traditional schooling for early childhood through college and job training levels. During the pandemic disruption, remote and hybrid tools were adopted rapidly without the benefit of careful utilization. This text conducts that careful consideration in the past tense. Covering topics such as artificial intelligence, connected learning, and educational simulation games, this book is an excellent reference for educators of K-12 and higher education, school faculty and administrators, researchers, pre-service teachers, policymakers, and academicians.

Book Olfaction

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joel L. Davis
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 1991
  • ISBN : 9780262041249
  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book Olfaction written by Joel L. Davis and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational neuroscientists have recently turned to modeling olfactory structures because these are likely to have the same functional properties as currently popular network designs for perception and memory. This book provides a useful survey of current work on olfactory system circuitry, including connections of this system to brain structures involved in cognition and memory, and describes the computational models of olfactory processing that have been developed to date. Contributions cover empirical investigations of the neurobiology of the olfactory systems (anatomy, physiology, synaptic plasticity, behavioral physiology) as well as the application of computer models to understanding these systems. Fundamental issues in olfactory processing by the nervous systems such as experimental strategies in the study of olfaction, stages of odor processing, and critical questions in sensory coding are considered across empirical/applied boundaries and throughout the contributions.
