Book Geometry and Topology in Music

Download or read book Geometry and Topology in Music written by Moreno Andreatta and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces path-breaking applications of concepts from mathematical topology to music-theory topics including harmony, chord progressions, rhythm, and music classification. Contributions address topics of voice leading, Tonnetze (maps of notes and chords), and automatic music classification. Focusing on some geometrical and topological aspects of the representation and formalisation of musical structures and processes, the book covers topological features of voice-leading geometries in the most recent advances in this mathematical approach to representing how chords are connected through the motion of voices, leading to analytically useful simplified models of high-dimensional spaces; It generalizes the idea of a Tonnetz, a geometrical map of tones or chords, and shows how topological aspects of these maps can correspond to many concepts from music theory. The resulting framework embeds the chord maps of neo-Riemannian theory in continuous spaces that relate chords of different sizes and includes extensions of this approach to rhythm theory. It further introduces an application of topology to automatic music classification, drawing upon both static topological representations and time-series evolution, showing how static and dynamic features of music interact as features of musical style. This volume will be a key resource for academics, researchers, and advanced students of music, music analyses, music composition, mathematical music theory, computational musicology, and music informatics. It was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Mathematics and Music.

Book Elements of Point Set Topology

Download or read book Elements of Point Set Topology written by John D. Baum and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topology continues to be a topic of prime importance in contemporary mathematics, but until the publication of this book there were few if any introductions to topology for undergraduates. This book remedied that need by offering a carefully thought-out, graduated approach to point set topology at the undergraduate level. To make the book as accessible as possible, the author approaches topology from a geometric and axiomatic standpoint; geometric, because most students come to the subject with a good deal of geometry behind them, enabling them to use their geometric intuition; axiomatic, because it parallels the student's experience with modern algebra, and keeps the book in harmony with current trends in mathematics. After a discussion of such preliminary topics as the algebra of sets, Euler-Venn diagrams and infinite sets, the author takes up basic definitions and theorems regarding topological spaces (Chapter 1). The second chapter deals with continuous functions (mappings) and homeomorphisms, followed by two chapters on special types of topological spaces (varieties of compactness and varieties of connectedness). Chapter 5 covers metric spaces. Since basic point set topology serves as a foundation not only for functional analysis but also for more advanced work in point set topology and algebraic topology, the author has included topics aimed at students with interests other than analysis. Moreover, Dr. Baum has supplied quite detailed proofs in the beginning to help students approaching this type of axiomatic mathematics for the first time. Similarly, in the first part of the book problems are elementary, but they become progressively more difficult toward the end of the book. References have been supplied to suggest further reading to the interested student.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this volume are based on the talks given at two special sessions at the AMS Sectional meetings held in 2004. The articles cover various topological and asymptotic aspects of group theory, such as hyperbolic and relatively hyperbolic groups, asymptotic cones, Thompson's group, Nielsen fixed point theory, homology, groups acting on trees, groups generated by finite automata, iterated monodromy groups, random walks on finitely generated groups, heat kernels, and currents on free groups.

Book Plasma Works From Topological Geometries to Urban Landscaping color

Download or read book Plasma Works From Topological Geometries to Urban Landscaping color written by Maria Elisabetta Bonafede and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: olume #33 of "The IT Revolution in Architecture", this book outlines the work of Plasma studio, from the cultural elements tied to landform, to the parametric development of the projects, to the very organization of the studio. The topological geometries of the interior of the Hotel Puerta America; the advanced conceptualization of landform architecture; the approach to the complex design synthesis of landscape urbanism at the great Flowing Gardens in Xi'an are a demonstration of how digital experimentation is a crucial weapon today. The author explores the intersections between digital philosophy, emerging technologies, and architecture and offers the reader the first complete critical and theoretical analysis of the work of Plasma studio. Founder and editor of the book series before with Birkhäuser and Testo&Immagine and now with Edilstampa, is Antonino Saggio. www.arc1.Uniroma1.it/Saggio/IT/

Book Breadth in Contemporary Topology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the 2017 Georgia International Topology Conference, held from May 22–June 2, 2017, at the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia. The papers contained in this volume cover topics ranging from symplectic topology to classical knot theory to topology of 3- and 4-dimensional manifolds to geometric group theory. Several papers focus on open problems, while other papers present new and insightful proofs of classical results. Taken as a whole, this volume captures the spirit of the conference, both in terms of public lectures and informal conversations, and presents a sampling of some of the great new ideas generated in topology over the preceding eight years.

Book Modern Analysis and Topology

Download or read book Modern Analysis and Topology written by Norman R. Howes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide an integrated development of modern analysis and topology through the integrating vehicle of uniform spaces. It is intended that the material be accessible to a reader of modest background. An advanced calculus course and an introductory topology course should be adequate. But it is also intended that this book be able to take the reader from that state to the frontiers of modern analysis and topology in-so-far as they can be done within the framework of uniform spaces. Modern analysis is usually developed in the setting of metric spaces although a great deal of harmonic analysis is done on topological groups and much offimctional analysis is done on various topological algebraic structures. All of these spaces are special cases of uniform spaces. Modern topology often involves spaces that are more general than uniform spaces, but the uniform spaces provide a setting general enough to investigate many of the most important ideas in modern topology, including the theories of Stone-Cech compactification, Hewitt Real-compactification and Tamano-Morita Para compactification, together with the theory of rings of continuous functions, while at the same time retaining a structure rich enough to support modern analysis.
