Book excerpt: Erosive and Abrasive Wear contains fully peer-reviewed papers presented at the Ninth International Conference on erosion by liquid and solid impact formerly known as ELSI and now parading under the five initials of ICEAW (International Conference on Erosion, Abrasion and Wear) so as to reflect the growing interest in the scientific community in abrasion. ICEAW was held at Churchill College, Cambridge, England from the 13th to the 17th September 1998. ICEAW is the latest in a series of meetings which started in 1965 with a meeting devoted to the topic of rain erosion. Three more conferences were held through the 1960s and 70s, with their coverage progressively broadening to include other types of erosion damage by solid particles and by cavitation. In 1979 the first ELSI conference (International Conference on Erosion by Liquid and Solid Impact) was held. 1979 also marked the first in a series of four conferences sponsored in part by EPRI, the Electric Power Research Institute of Palo Alto. These meetings, although focused on erosion-corrosion at high temperatures with particular reference to the problems of the power generation industry, also attracted contributions on other aspects of erosive wear. ICEAW followed a distinguished series of highly successful earlier meetings on erosion and was successful in attracting many delegates who did contribute papers on the closely-related topic of abrasive wear. More than 100 papers were presented either orally or as posters and authors were invited to contribute their papers for publication. As well as being published in a book these proceedings have been published as a special issue of the journal Wear , volumes 233-235.

Book excerpt: Tribology is emerging from the realm of steam engines and crank-case lubricants and becoming key to vital new technologies such as nanotechnology and MEMS. Wear is an integral part of tribology, and an effective understanding and appreciation of wear is essential in order to achieve the reliable and efficient operation of almost any machine or device. Knowledge in the field has increased considerably over recent years, and continues to expand: this book is intended to stimulate its readers to contribute towards the progress of this fascinating subject that relates to most of the known disciplines in physical science. Wear – Materials, Mechanisms and Practice provides the reader with a unique insight into our current understanding of wear, based on the contributions of numerous internationally acclaimed specialists in the field. Offers a comprehensive review of current knowledge in the field of wear. Discusses latest topics in wear mechanism classification. Includes coverage of a wide variety of materials such as metals, polymers, polymer composites, diamonds, and diamond-like films and ceramics. Discusses the chemo-mechanical linkages that control tribology, providing a more complete treatment of the subject than just the conventional mechanical treatments. Illustrated throughout with carefully compiled diagrams that provide a unique insight into the controlling mechanisms of tribology. The state of the art research on wear and the mechanisms of wear featured will be of interest to post-graduate students and lecturers in engineering, materials science and chemistry. The practical applications discussed will appeal to practitioners across virtually all sectors of engineering and industry including electronic, mechanical and electrical, quality and reliability and design.
