Book Special Investigation Techniques in Relation to Serious Crimes Including Acts of Terrorism

Download or read book Special Investigation Techniques in Relation to Serious Crimes Including Acts of Terrorism written by Council of Europe. Committee of Ministers and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to combat terrorism and serious crime, law enforcement authorities have had to adapt their investigative means and develop special investigation techniques. These techniques are used to systematically gather information in such a way that they do not alert those being investigated. Since there is a risk that they may infringe individual rights, special investigation techniques must be subject to control. This has been advocated by the European Court of Human Rights which "has already recognised the need, inherent in the Convention system, for a proper balance between the defence of the institutions of democracy in the common interest and the protection of individual rights". This publication contains Recommendation Rec(2005)10 of the Committee of Ministers to member states on "special investigation techniques" in relation to serious crimes including acts of terrorism. It aims at promoting the effective use of special investigation techniques by judicial and prosecuting authorities in the framework of their criminal investigations in relation to serious crimes, including acts of terrorism, whilst ensuring strict respect for the rights and freedoms of the individual.

Book Council of Europe Activity Report 2006 2007

Download or read book Council of Europe Activity Report 2006 2007 written by Council of Europe and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The implementation of the recommendations of the 3rd Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Council of Europe (Warsaw, May 2005) resulted in the launch in 2006 of a number of European campaigns, in particular "Building a Europe for and with children"; the "Campaign to combat trafficking in human beings"; "All different, All equal"; "Stop domestic violence against women"; and the 'Dosta!" awareness-raising campaign to end prejudice against the Roma. Kosovo was a major political concern for the Council of Europe. Through its Venice Commission, it provided expert input for the preparation of the future status of the region and continued to provide expert advice on the implementation of European standards in such fields as the protection of human rights, minority rights, decentralisation, cultural heritage protection and constitutional law. The Republic of Montenegro applied for membership of the Council of Europe following the 21 May referendum, which paved the way for its independence. Serbia, on the other hand, succeeded the former State Union of Serbia and Montenegro as a member state of the Organisation. The Council of Europe was the first organisation to look into the allegations of secret detentions and unlawful transfers of suspected terrorists in the member states. The Parliamentary Assembly and the Secretary General each carried out investigations which revealed that Council of Europe member states have not set up effective legal safeguards against such practices, which violate the European Convention on Human Rights.

Book Competition Authorities in South Eastern Europe

Download or read book Competition Authorities in South Eastern Europe written by Boris Begović and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides answers to key open questions concerning competition policy in emerging economies, with a focus on South Eastern Europe. The contributions address two major issues. One is the design of competition policy and the national competition authorities that enforce it, including the topics of competition advocacy and state aid control; the other is the use of economic methods in competition law enforcement, especially in the cases of relevant market definition and merger control. Many lessons learned in the countries of South Eastern Europe can be applied to the emerging markets of other regions. As such, the findings presented here will be highly relevant for officials and staff at national competition authorities, advisers to legislators shaping national competition policy, competition law professionals, and university students alike.

Book The Economic History of Central East and South East Europe

Download or read book The Economic History of Central East and South East Europe written by Matthias Morys and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of communism in Central, East and South-East Europe (CESEE) led to great hopes for the region and for Europe. A quarter of a century on, the picture is mixed: in many CESEE countries, the transformation process is incomplete, and the economic catch-up has taken longer than anticipated. The current situation has highlighted the need for a better understanding of the long-term political and economic implications of the Central, East and South-East European historical experience. This thematically organised text offers a clear and comprehensive guide to the economic history of CESEE from 1800 to the present day. Bringing together authors from both East and West, the book also draws on the cutting-edge research of a new generation of scholars from the CESEE region. Presenting a thoroughly modern overview of the history of the region, the text will be invaluable to students of economic history and CESEE area studies.

Book The Capacity of Central and East European Interest Groups to Participate in EU Governance

Download or read book The Capacity of Central and East European Interest Groups to Participate in EU Governance written by Daniela Obradovic and published by ibidem-Verlag / ibidem Press. This book was released on 2012-02-24 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The integration of ten Central and East European countries (CEEC) into the EU as part of the 2004 and 2007 enlargements poses new challenges to EU governance, as the number of countries involved has thereby increased dramatically. However, the actors coming from the new member states also face challenges as they attempt to integrate themselves into EU decision-making processes. This book analyses the attempts of of civil society organisations from the Czech Republic and Poland to engage in EU governance in four policy fields. The guiding question is whether civil society organisations from the Central and East European member states have (or can gain) the capacity for meaningful participation in EU governance. After an introductory part, which outlines the analytical framework and offers a review of the literature, the actors and rules of EU governance are profiled. The third and fourth parts of the book then present case studies. The case studies address the civil society organisations most actively involved in EU governance, namely typical NGOs, trade unions, employers’ organisations and business associations.

Download or read book Beyond the Balkans written by Sabine Rutar and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2014 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how current and future research on the social history of the Balkans can be integrated into a broader European framework. The contributions look at a range of methodological and empirical issues, and the theme that links the various studies is that of the contrasting, yet, at the same time, entangled ideas of the Balkans as a "mental map" and of Southeast Europe as an "historical region."
