Book The Evolution of US Army Tactical Doctrine 1946 76

Download or read book The Evolution of US Army Tactical Doctrine 1946 76 written by Robert A. Doughty and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper focuses on the formulation of doctrine since World War II. In no comparable period in history have the dimensions of the battlefield been so altered by rapid technological changes. The need for the tactical doctrines of the Army to remain correspondingly abreast of these changes is thus more pressing than ever before. Future conflicts are not likely to develop in the leisurely fashions of the past where tactical doctrines could be refined on the battlefield itself. It is, therefore, imperative that we apprehend future problems with as much accuracy as possible. One means of doing so is to pay particular attention to the business of how the Army's doctrine has developed historically, with a view to improving methods of future development.

Book Army Special Operations Forces

Download or read book Army Special Operations Forces written by U. S. Army and published by . This book was released on 2014-06-04 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field Manual (FM) 3-05.130, Army Special Operations Forces Unconventional Warfare, establishes keystone doctrine for Army special operations forces (ARSOF) operations in unconventional warfare (UW). It is basedon lessons learned from both historical and contemporary UW operations. It is also based on existing, long-standing Army Special Forces (SF) UW doctrine; recently developed doctrine, such as counterinsurgency (COIN); and emerging affiliated concepts, such as irregular warfare (IW).Since 11 September 2001 and the onset of the War on Terrorism (WOT), existing UW doctrinal publications have undergone intense scrutiny and timely revision. A majority of existing ARSOF manuals have incorporated recent lessons learned and updated tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP) of immediate utility to the conductof war. For this reason, the Army has classified most of these revised manuals. UW remains an enduring and effective means of warfighting and is recognized as a central effort in the WOT. Although the classification of existing doctrine is prudent for operational security, it limits the distribution of concepts necessary for aneffective joint, interagency, and multinational effort. ARSOF and other audiences require an unclassified conceptual manual useful to understanding the nature of UW and its role in the nation's application of power. This manual provides that unclassified conceptual treatment.ARSOF execute and are the functional proponent for UW under United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) Directive 10-1, Terms of Reference for Component Commanders, and other authorities. Currently, there exists no authoritative interagency or joint doctrine specifically for UW-although sufficient joint doctrine does exist for general campaign design and execution of joint and Army operations. This manual is the overarching doctrinal reference that specifically addresses UW as conducted by ARSOF. Detailed TTP for UWcan be found in FM 3-05.201, (S/NF) Special Forces Unconventional Warfare (U). The first chapter establishes what UW is and includes a comparison of traditional and emerging concepts withwhich UW is sometimes confused. Chapter 2 discusses the international environment and United States (U.S.) instruments of national power within which all military operations-including UW-occur. Chapter 3 addresses policy and doctrine that define, enable, and constrain UW. Chapter 4 outlines planning considerations for UW.The next three chapters provide a more focused operational discussion of ARSOF's three main component disciplines: SF operations, Psychological Operations (PSYOP), and Civil Affairs operations (CAO). Chapter 8, which concerns supporting elements and activities of UW, concludes the basic manual. The appendixes contain useful supplemental information. The first seven appendixes (A-G) provide expanded and detailed information on U.S. instruments of national power within the broader context of the international environment. Appendix H is a survey of definitions and current academic considerations concerning historical and cultural concepts usefulto the assessment of human environments. Appendix I provides a historical survey of UW. Appendix J contains an outline sketch of change and constancy in the definition of UW. Current doctrinal references and an expanded bibliography provide a guide for further reading and mature understanding of UW within the endeavor of war. Both the text and the Glossary identify terms that have joint or Army definitions. FM 3-05.130 is the proponent field manual (the authority) for UW, but is not the proponent for any other Army term.

Book Army Special Forces Doctrine

Download or read book Army Special Forces Doctrine written by Stuart Pike and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines Army Special Forces doctrine and compares it to the requirements of the Objective Force. It then makes recommendations for changes to Special Forces doctrine. The discussion begins with a review of the missions assigned to USCINCSOC by Section 167, Chapter 6, Title X of the U.S. Code. Once the special operations missions mandated by Congress are identified, the context of the Objective Force - the world as it may exist in 2030 - is postulated. It is cooperative security as described by Barry Posen and Andrew Ross in Competing Visions for U.S. Grand Strategies. The doctrinal tenants of likely adversaries are briefly discussed; they are based on the projections of MG Robert H. Scales, Jr. (Ret.) in America is Army in Transition: Preparing for War in the Precision Age. The National Security Strategy and National Military Strategy are also examined. The tenets of U.S. strategy described in those documents are carried into the future largely unchanged. The capabilities and requirements of the Objective Force are painted in broad strokes; the details are not discussed. The biggest doctrinal difference for the Objective Force is in how the force will see the battlefield. The leaders of the Legacy Force make contact, develop the situation and maneuver their forces. Leaders of the Objective Force will understand the situation, move their forces and then make contact. U.S. Special Forces doctrine is examined and compared to probable Objective Force requirements. The major mismatch is in the area of timely information and intelligence. The paper closes by recommending a number of changes to existing Special Forces doctrine. The recommendations include updating Army Special Forces doctrinal publications to use uniform verbiage; eliminate vague phraseology and subordinating all Special Forces missions to Unconventional Warfare.

Book US Army Special Forces Role In Asymmetric Warfare

Download or read book US Army Special Forces Role In Asymmetric Warfare written by Major Heinz P. Dinter Jr. and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. National Security Strategy is the basis of a preventive solution through global engagement, which fosters international interoperability and cooperation to defeat complex asymmetric threats. The study examined how U.S. Army Special Forces (SF) can advance this interoperability and cooperation, and identified three evolving roles; Strike Force, Warrior Diplomats, and Global Scouts. As they transition into the 21st century, the central research question is: will U.S. Army Special Forces need to redefine themselves in terms of mission, doctrine, training, or organization as a result of their evolving roles conditioned by an asymmetric threat environment? The study examined the relevance of core, collateral, and emerging missions. It concluded that basic SF doctrine remains sound, but the changing environment and evolving roles of SF will call for a certain amount of refinement. Tactics, techniques, and procedures will change as new technologies are introduced into SF organizations, but emphasis on the human element remains essential, and SF core competencies and warrior skills must be preserved. The study concluded with recommendations to preserve the relevance and efficiency of SF as the premier mechanism for extending U.S. influence in a world of increased global interaction, required to meet security needs.
