Book Arc slag Remelting of Steel and Alloys

Download or read book Arc slag Remelting of Steel and Alloys written by B. I. Medovar and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes the method of remelting consumable electrodes with an electric are burning between the surface of a liquid slag bath and a consumable electrode in a water-cooled copper mould. The method combines the possibilities of treatment of liquid metal with the electric arc in the gas atmosphere and the liquid slag and the advantages of plasma-arc and electro slag remelting. The technological possibilities, design features of melting systems and results of experimental and industrial melting trials of steels and alloys are described. In addition to remelting structural steels, special attention is given to the possibility of alloying the metal with nitrogen from the gas phase, without using expensive nitrogen-bearing nonmetallic compounds, e.g. silicon nitride. It is shown that arc slag remelting can also be used efficiently in producing ingots of titanium and its alloys. The results obtained in this method are compared with electro slag remelting and plasma arc remelting. Data on energy consumption and metal quality are also presented.

Book The Vacuum Interrupter

Download or read book The Vacuum Interrupter written by Paul G. Slade and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Title: The Vacuum Interrupter: Theory, Design, and Application Shelving guide: Electrical Engineering Dr. Paul Slade draws from his nearly six decades of active experience to develop this second edition of The Vacuum Interrupter: Theory, Design, and Application. This book begins by discussing the design requirements for high voltage vacuum interrupters and then the contact requirements to interrupt the vacuum arc. It then continues by describing the various applications in which the vacuum interrupter is generally utilized. Part 1 of this book begins with a detailed review of the vacuum breakdown process. It continues by covering the steps necessary for the design and the manufacture of a successful vacuum interrupter. The vacuum arc is then discussed, including how it is affected as a function of current. An overview of the development and use of practical contact materials, along with their advantages and disadvantages, follows. Contact designs that are introduced to control the high current vacuum arc are also analyzed. Part 2, on application, begins with a discussion of the arc interruption process for low current and high current vacuum arcs. It examines the voltage escalation phenomenon that can occur when interrupting inductive circuits. The occurrence of contact welding for closed contacts subjected to the passage of high currents, and for contacts when closing on high currents, is explored. The general requirements for the successful manufacture and testing of vacuum circuit breakers is then presented. The general application of vacuum interrupters to switch load currents, especially when applied to capacitor circuits, is also given. The interruption of high short circuit currents is presented along with the expected performance of the two major contact designs. Owing to the ever-increasing need for environmentally friendly circuit protection devices, the development and application of the vacuum interrupter will only increase in the future. At present the vacuum circuit breaker is the technology of choice for distribution circuits (5kV to 40.5kV). It is increasingly being applied to transmission circuits (72.5kV to 242kV). In the future, its application for protecting high voltage DC networks is assured. Audience This is a practical source book for engineers and scientists interested in studying the development and application of the vacuum interrupter Research scientists in industry and universities Graduate students beginning their study of vacuum interrupter phenomena Design engineers applying vacuum interrupters in vacuum switches, vacuum contactors, vacuum circuit breakers, and vacuum contactors It provides a unique and comprehensive review of all aspects of vacuum interrupter technology for those new to the subject and for those who wish to obtain a deeper understanding of its science and application Scientists and engineers, who are beginning their research into vacuum breakdown and aspects of the vacuum arc, will find the extensive bibliography and phenomenological descriptions to be a useful introduction

Book Technology for the Production of New Grades and Types of Ferro alloys Using Thermal Plasma

Download or read book Technology for the Production of New Grades and Types of Ferro alloys Using Thermal Plasma written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential technical and economic advantages of thermal plasma technology over those of submerged-arc furnace processes for the production of ferro-alloys were recognized some 10 years ago. These include the ability of the plasma furnace to treat fine feed, its rapid response to control, and the greater flexibility of its operating conditions. Ferrochromium with a higher chromium content and at a better chromium recovery than can be achieved in a submerged-arc furnace has been produced in an industrial-scale 16 MVA d.c. plasma-arc furnace at Middelburg Steel & Alloys (Pty) Ltd. The sulphur and phosphorus contents of the alloy are less than half those given in the standard specification. Pilot-scale developments for new grades of ferrochromium have been undertaken at the Council for Mineral Technology (Mintek) following the successful technology transfer to Middelburg Steel & Alloys of the plasma melting and smelting of high-carbon ferrochromium. The selective carbothermic reduction of chromite to produce a slag with a chromium-to-iron ratio of between 3 and 5 has been achieved at the 1 MW scale. The slag can be used as a synthetic ore to produce alloys containing 65 to 75 per cent chromium. The refining of high-carbon ferrochromium to medium-carbon ferrochromium has also been carried out at Mintek. Speciality ferro-alloys such as silicides, ferrovanadium, and ferro-titanium are under investigation in small-scale plasma furnaces at Mintek.
