Book Catalogue of the Retrospective Loan Exhibition of European Tapestries Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Retrospective Loan Exhibition of European Tapestries From the xivth to the end of the xvth century was the Gothic period. Then tapestry was at its greatest height. More of the requisites of its design were met, and met more adequately and more naturally, than by any subsequent school of designers or any looms. As illustration, the tapestry of the Gothic period is inter esting, Vivid, and provocative. The stories and episodes that it presents were, to be sure, all part of the mental content of the audience, so that they comprehended them more immediately than we; but even without the literary background we follow them readily, so adequate is their delineation. Moreover, they carry success fully almost every narrative mood - humor, romance, lyricism, excitement, pathos, and pure adventure - and, except in the traditional religious scenes, they wisely eschew such tenser dramatic attitudes as a momentous climax, long-sustained suspense, or profound tragedy. Finally, when they, had a good tale to tell, the Gothic designers rendered their episodes With a fullness of incident and a vivacity of detail never again equaled. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition of Tapestries: January 26 to February 28, 1893 Among the monuments that the past has bequeathed to us there are none which ch'er so much material for the archae ologist as ancient tapestries. The vicissitudes of this industry are closely connected with the history of the countries in which it is practised. Not only does the greater part of these productions bear the imprint of the epoch in which they were produced, but we find in them the reflection of the beliefs and of the great events of their time, with all the details of its architecture and its costumes. They give us, in fact, a picture of the intimate life of each century. M. Caste]. Les Tapisseries. The history of tapestry from the Middle Ages onward is that of painting. At that epoch the style is that of the illu minatore and the painters of glass. In the fifteenth century the influence of the early Flemish painters, the Van Eycks, Van de Weyden, Bouts, Memling and Matsys, makes itself felt. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pieter Coecke van Aelst (1502 – 1550) was renowned throughout Renaissance Europe as a draftsman, painter, and publisher of architectural treatises. The magnificent tapestries he designed were acquired by the wealthiest clients of the day, up to and including rulers such as Emperor Charles V, King Francis I of France, King Henry VIII of England, and Grand Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici of Tuscany. At the same time, Coecke was remarkable not only for the complexity and unparalleled quality of his tapestries, but also for his fluency in various media: this lavishly illustrated volume examines the full range of his work, from tapestry and stained-glass window designs to panel paintings, prints, drawings, and architectural treatises. Though only forty-eight when he died, Coecke was one of the greatest Netherlandish artists of the sixteenth century. His paintings and drawings, initially wrought in the style of the Antwerp Mannerists, evolved through his enthusiastic response to Italian Renaissance design, and influenced generations of artists in his wake. This comprehensive study explores Coecke’s stylistic development, as well as his substantial contribution to the body of great Renaissance art in Flanders. Featuring twenty monumental tapestries, along with many of their cartoons and preparatory sketches, plus seven paintings, additional drawings, and printed matter—many of them newly photographed for this volume—Grand Design provides a thorough reappraisal of Coecke’s work, amply justifying the high regard in which Coecke’s work was held and its wide dissemination long after his death.
