Book Speaking Against Number

Download or read book Speaking Against Number written by Stuart Elden and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-29 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numbers and politics are inter-related at almost every level - be it the abstract geometry of understandings of territory, the explosion of population statistics and measures of economic standards, the popularity of Utilitarianism, Rawlsian notions of justice, the notion of value, or simply the very idea of political science. Time and space are reduced to co-ordinates, illustrating a very real take on the political: a way of measuring and controlling it.This book engages with the relation between politics and number through a reading, exegesis and critique of the work of Martin Heidegger. The importance of mathematics and the role played by the understandings of calculation is a recurrent concern in his writing and is regularly contrasted with understandings of speech and language. This book provides the most detailed analysis of the relation between language, politics and mathematics in Heidegger's work. It insists that questions of language and calculation in Heidegger are inherently political, and that a far broader range of his work is concerned with politics than is usually admitted.Key Features:*A unique introduction to the political dimension of Heidegger's work, opening it up to a wider audience*Offers an original exploration of the relationship between language, mathematics and politics in Heidegger's thinking*Shows how questions of politics and calculation are inter-related in modern conceptions of the politicalBooks in the series are...Valentine and Arditi Polemicization Shapiro Cinematic Political ThoughtChambers Untimely PoliticsElden Speaking Against NumberBowman Post-Marxism Versus Cultural StudiesMarchart Post-Foundational Political ThoughtLittle Democratic Piety

Book Speaking about Godard

Download or read book Speaking about Godard written by Kaja Silverman and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1998-07 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A filmmaker and a film theorist construct a dialogue around a close reading of eight Godard films, in chronological order, beginning with My Life to Live (1962) and ending with New Wave (1990). Their close reading follows the unfolding of the films as if the two were sitting at a flatbed, with the benefit of a filmmaker's eye for the formal issues of shooting and editing and a theorist's attention to the relations of text and interpretation. Book Numerical Cognition and the Epistemology of Arithmetic

Download or read book Numerical Cognition and the Epistemology of Arithmetic written by Markus Pantsar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-28 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arithmetic is one of the foundations of our educational systems, but what exactly is it? Numbers are everywhere in our modern societies, but what is our knowledge of numbers really about? This book provides a philosophical account of arithmetical knowledge that is based on the state-of-the-art empirical studies of numerical cognition. It explains how humans have developed arithmetic from humble origins to its modern status as an almost universally possessed knowledge and skill. Central to the account is the realisation that, while arithmetic is a human creation, the development of arithmetic is constrained by our evolutionarily developed cognitive architecture. Arithmetic is a sophisticated cultural development, but it is ultimately based on abilities with numerosities that we already possess as infants and share with many non-human animals. Therefore, arithmetic is not purely conventional, an arbitrary game akin to chess. Instead, arithmetic is deeply connected to our basic cognitive capacities.

Book The Decline of the Individual

Download or read book The Decline of the Individual written by Mark D. White and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the steady decline in the status of the individual in recent years and addresses common misunderstandings about the concept of individuality. Drawing from psychology, neuroscience, technology, economics, philosophy, politics, and law, White explains how and why the individual has been devalued in the eyes of scholars, government leaders, and the public. He notes that developments in science have led to doubts about our cognitive competence, while assumptions made in the humanities have led to questions about our moral competence. In this book, White goes on to argue that both of these views are mistaken and that they stem from overly simplistic ideas about how individuals make choices, however imperfectly, in their interests, which are multifaceted and complex. In response, he proposes a new way to look at individuals that preserves their essential autonomy while emphasizing their responsibility to others, inspired by the moral philosophy of Immanuel Kant and the legal and political philosophy reflected in the Bill of Rights to the U.S. Constitution. This book explains how individuality combines both rights and responsibilities, reconciles the popular yet false dichotomy between individual and society, and provides the basis for a humane and respectful civil society and government. This book is part of White's trilogy on the individual and society, which includes The Manipulation of Choice and The Illusion of Well-Being.

Book Impromptu Speaking

Download or read book Impromptu Speaking written by Vera Gough and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-06-06 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impromptu Speaking, Second Edition provides a time-saving method and a guide for the type of speech anyone might make. The book, in particular, covers how to make short speeches in a conversational way. Organized into four chapters, the book begins with an explanation of confidence in speechmaking. The role that sense of humor plays in a speech is also addressed. Subsequent chapter elucidates the five-point plan, which corresponds to the fingers and thumb of one hand. In studying the plan, no. 1 (little finger) always refers to the occasion, and no. 5 (thumb) always refers to the purpose of it. Then, with practice, notes are written against 2, 3, and 4 only. In the last chapter, plans and examples are given. This book will be helpful to anyone who will make an impromptu speech.
