Book Being and Becoming a Speaker of Japanese

Download or read book Being and Becoming a Speaker of Japanese written by Andrea Simon-Maeda and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This autoethnographic account of the author’s Japanese as a second language learning trajectory is an important and unique addition to diary studies in SLA and applied linguistics qualitative research circles. In-depth ethnographic details and introspective commentary are skilfully interwoven throughout Simon-Maeda’s narrative of her experiences as an American expatriate who arrived in Japan in 1975 – the starting point of her being and becoming a speaker of Japanese. The book joins the recent surge in postmodernist, interdisciplinary approaches to examining language acquisition, and readers are presented with a highly convincing case for using autoethnography to better understand sociolinguistic complexities that are unamenable to quantification of isolated variables. The comprehensive literature review and wide ranging references provide a valuable source of information for researchers, educators, and graduate students concerned with current issues in SLA/applied linguistics, bi/multilingualism, and Japanese as a second language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An impressive synthesis of current literature in African history, making it understandable and relevant.” —Jan Bender Shetler, author of Imagining Serengeti: A History of Landscape Memory in Tanzania from Earliest Times to the Present Africa’s Past, Our Future engages the history of the African continent through the perspective of global issues such as political instability, economic development, and climate change. Since the past may offer alternative models for thinking about our collective future, this book promotes an appreciation for African social, economic, and political systems that have endured over the long-term and that offer different ways of thinking about a sustainable future. Introducing readers to the wide variety of sources from which African history is constructed, the book’s ten chapters cover human evolution, the domestication of plants and animals, climate change, social organization, the slave trade and colonization, development, and contemporary economics and politics. “Smythe not only provides an excellent survey of the latest research on Africa’s past, she also presents a concise and clear argument as to why this history is relevant today.” ?African Studies Review “Recommended.” ?Choice “Grapples with the narratives and facts and where they fit in global perspective, but why this is all salient and critically meaningful to our lives today in terms of lessons we can learn and ideas we can borrow. This is a unique approach not yet available on the market.” ?Catherine Cymone Fourshey, Susquehanna University

Book A Sociocultural Study of Intercultural Discourse

Download or read book A Sociocultural Study of Intercultural Discourse written by Antonella Castelnuovo and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of research which was begun over twenty years ago and which spanned two countries, as well as two decades. It developed out of the author’s work in speech therapy, but took on the in-depth theoretical investigation of the work of Bernstein, Vygotsky, Luria, and Hallidayan linguistics in an investigation of ways of thinking and the use of language, and particularly the relationship between group processes and individual learning. The small sample analysed in the book, taken from classroom data gathered in a small town in Tuscany and a small group of adolescents, and put under the microscope of quantitative and qualitative analysis involving multiple tests regarding various linguistic and socio-cultural elements, is testament to the complexity of such a setting and the nature of classroom interaction. The complex interactions between theory and practice, and between individual consciousness and socially organised experience are laid out in detail throughout the book, which offers both wide ranging and in-depth theoretical analysis of the relevant literature and insights into the careful sampling procedures used in the classroom all brought together to provide up-to-date and detailed information for teachers and to highlight aspects of diversity in the appropriation of cultural tools. The book can be read in two different ways, each one of them informative in itself. For those interested in socio-culturally informed theories of language, this book will serve as a guide to the relationships between three possible approaches: namely, the sociological approach of Basil Bernstein, the cultural-historical approach of Lev Vygotsky, and the linguistic approach of Michael Halliday. For those interested in empirical analysis of discourses produced by adolescents from different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, the book provides rich material about language use by Italian and immigrant youth.

Book Emote

    Book Details:
  • Author : Vikas Gopal Jhingran
  • Publisher : Random House India
  • Release : 2014-03-25
  • ISBN : 8184006055
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Emote written by Vikas Gopal Jhingran and published by Random House India. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From being so inept at public speaking that his supervisor wouldn’t let him make presentations to clients—even when he had done all the work—Vikas Jhingran went on to become a championship-winning public speaker who leaves a lasting impact on his audience. Few speakers and presenters understand speeches or presentations at a fundamental level. Most books have an overly prescriptive approach, using the tricks and tools of speech delivery that end up confusing the speech, instead of connecting with the essential part of speaking—that which engages listeners. In Emote, Vikas Jhingran lays bare his unique approach—connecting with his audience on an emotional level, rather than subscribing to a “right” way of speaking—which applies equally to one-on-one conversations, small team settings, and large audiences. His method will show you how to express your ideas clearly, quell your fear of public speaking, calm the sweating, stuttering and jitters that plague people before crucial presentations, and, overall, help you become an effective communicator.
