Book Steel Will

Download or read book Steel Will written by Shilo Harris and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On February 19, 2007, SSG Shilo Harris was patrolling an infamous southern Iraqi roadway when his Humvee was struck by an IED. Moments later, three members of his crew were dead and Shilo had sustained severe burns over 35 percent of his body, lost his ears and the skin off his face, and lost much of the use of his badly mangled fingers. This fiery moment was just the beginning of an arduous road laced with pain, emotional anguish, and much soul-searching. For forty-eight days Shilo lay trapped in a medically induced coma as his wife, unable to ease his suffering, had to come to grips with a man utterly changed. This is the story of a young boy raised in a small Texas town under the heavy yoke of a father struggling with the personal aftermath of his service in Vietnam. This is the story of the first human being to participate in extracellular stem cell regeneration to regrow lost body parts. This is the story of the survivor not only of an explosion but of more than sixty surgeries to restore both form and function to his broken body. This is the story of the wife who stood by his side, made hard decisions, and continues to support her husband through his struggles with PTSD. This is the story of a God who reshapes us into the people he wants us to be. And in that way, this is the story of all of us. Anyone whose life has been touched by tragedy and loss, especially military families dealing with PTSD, TBI, amputations, and other realities of wartime service, will find strength, encouragement, and inspiration in this moving memoir.

Download or read book The Speaker s Toolbox written by Brian Woolf and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to help newer speakers speak better ... faster. This is achieved with its focus on the three essentials: a clear message, a close audience connection, and helping your audience remember. An important contribution the book also makes is an explanation why audiences' minds wander and how you can hold their attention. The book comprises two parts: a set of 47 tools to build better speeches; followed by 11 world-class speeches, examples of speaking excellence illustrating many of the tools described. The book has a clear, easy-to-understand style, free of technical rhetorical terms. Each helpful tool covers two pages: a half-page description, followed by copious examples allowing the reader to clearly understand the tool's use in different situations. In addition to triggering new speech ideas, readers can adapt the examples given to dovetail into their own speeches. Besides including some of the better-known speech tools such as Alliteration, Repetition, and Triples, it introduces the reader to some of the newer tools such as Twists, the Senses, and Visual Words. It is a toolbox of fresh, helpful ideas that every speaker will keep nearby.

Book 127 Hours

Download or read book 127 Hours written by Aron Ralston and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Sunday April 27, 2003, 27-year old Aron Ralston set off for a day's hiking in the Utah canyons. Dressed in a t-shirt and shorts, Ralston, a seasoned climber, figured he'd hike for a few hours and then head off to work. 40 miles from the nearest paved road, he found himself on top of an 800-pound boulder. As he slid down and off of the boulder it shifted, trapping his right hand against the canyon wall. No one knew where he was; he had little water; he wasn't dressed correctly; and the boulder wasn't going anywhere. He remained trapped for five days in the canyon: hypothermic at night, de-hydrated and hallucinating by day. Finally, he faced the most terrible decision of his life: braking the bones in his wrist by snapping them against the boulder, he hacked through the skin, and finally succeeded in amputating his right hand and wrist. The ordeal, however, was only beginning. He still faced a 60-foot rappell to freedom, and a walk of several hours back to his car - along the way, he miraculously met a family of hikers, and with his arms tourniqued, and blood-loss almost critical, they heard above them the whir of helicopter blades; just in time, Aron was rescued and rushed to hospital. Since that day, Aron has had a remarkable recovery. He is back out on the mountains, with an artificial limb; he speaks to select groups on his ordeal and rescue; and amazingly, he is upbeat, positive, and an inspiration to all who meet him. This is the account of those five days, of the years that led up to them, and where he goes from here. It is narrative non-fiction at its most compelling.
