Download or read book We Don t Speak of Fear written by M Gerard Fromm and published by Phoenix Publishing House. This book was released on 2023-04-04 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With contributions from Lord John Alderdice, Deniz Aribog?an, Abdulkadir Cevik, Senem B. Cevik, Coline Covington, Robi Friedman, David Fromm, M. Gerard Fromm, Hiba Husseini, Aleksandr V. Obolonski, Ford Rowan, Regine Scholz, Edward R. Shapiro, Vamik D. Volkan The International Dialogue Initiative (IDI) is a private, international, multidisciplinary group comprised of psychoanalysts, academics, diplomats, and other professionals who bring a psychologically informed perspective to the study and amelioration of societal conflict. It aims to provide a reflective space to enable an understanding of how the emotional and historical background of hostile relations - often related to trauma - is being experienced in the present. By doing so, antagonists can overcome resistances to dialogue and facilitate the discovery of peaceful solutions to intergroup problems. This book brings together key members of the IDI to present the theory and practice of the important work they do. At its heart, the book holds the idea that, while traumatic experiences may happen to an individual or a family, they also affect society and large-group identity over long periods of time. In that way, trauma plays out between generations and between countries. The book is divided into three parts: theory, application, and methodology. Trauma is the key thread running throughout and the distinguished contributors investigate healing, dehumanisation, memory, the pandemic, war, terrorism, identity, culture, the law, justice, and religion, among many other fascinating topics. The authors bring in case studies from all over the world, including the United States, Northern Ireland, Russia, Israel, Turkey, Germany, Egypt, and Palestine. To make sense of these, they draw on a wide range of approaches: group relations theory, group analytic theory, psychoanalysis, large-group psychology, psychodynamic theory, psychology, economics, sociology, political science, history, journalism, and the law, to name but a few. This must-read book brings theory to vivid life and brings hope that our fractured world can learn to heal.

Download or read book Virtual English as a Lingua Franca written by Inmaculada Pineda and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-12 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection offers a comprehensive account of the development of intercultural communication strategies through Virtual English as a lingua franca, reflecting on the ways in which we make pragmatic meaning in today’s technology-informed globalized world. The volume places an emphasis on analyzing transmodal, trans-semiotic, and transcultural discourse practices in online spaces, providing a counterpoint to existing ELF research which has leaned towards unpacking formal features of ELF communication in face-to-face interactions. The chapters explore how these practices are characterized and then further sustained via non-verbal semiotic resources, drawing on data from a global range of empirical studies. The book prompts further reflection on readers’ own experiences in online settings and the challenges of VELF while also supplying educators in these contexts with the analytical resources to better bridge the gap between formal and informal learning. Highlighting the dynamic complexity of online intercultural communication in the twenty-first century, this book is a valuable resource for students and scholars in applied linguistics, language education, digital communication, and intercultural communication.
Download or read book Connect written by Dale Carnegie & Associates and published by Gildan Media LLC aka G&D Media. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At Dale Carnegie Training, we agree that some things never change. After all, the timeless principles that our founder Dale Carnegie established are still as practical and relevant today as ever. Now that the citizens of our world have made radical shifts because of the global pandemic, and adjusted to remote work and social distancing, the ways we used to connect with others may seem distant or even obsolete. We yearn for real connection, deep and meaningful interactions that are based on commonality instead of what we can get from one another. Connections can happen anywhere and can range from the simple to the profound. They are what adds the seasoning to the stew of life. They are the things that can make their day, and make ours, and leave us smiling. And who doesn’t want to smile? Does this mean that it’s easy? That there are no challenges to connecting with different people? Of course not. In our modern world, it’s become normalized to have conflict with those who are different from us. This can make some people skeptical and suspicious when we reach out to them for connection. “What do you want from me?” can be a response. “I’m not going to change for you.” Yet, those are the very situations where connection matters most. True, genuine connection can create commonality from difference. And once that is done, conflict decreases. We may not agree with the other person, but we can step inside their world for awhile. And understand their perspective, and maybe change our own, or at least understand the true source of disagreement. The truth is, it’s easier to change ourselves than our circumstances. And, we can change our circumstances by changing ourselves.
