The City is experiencing rapid urbanization, and limitation of green area aesthetical values that has resulted in remarkable surface temperature. Despite this, as of yet, no evaluations have been duly executed pertaining to the thermal or ecological factors in Dire Dawa. The study utilized Landsat 5 (TM), Landsat 9 (OIL/TIRS) and MODIS 11A2 images which were obtained from USGS for the study area. To analyze and show results clearly, ArcGIS 10.8, ERDAS IMAGINE 2014, and Excel 2013 softwares were used. The LULC pattern was processed by supervised classification with the maximum likelihood classification algorithm and four major land use land cover (Built-up area, Barren land, Shrub land, and sparse vegetation) were identified. The biggest urban problem facing cities around the world today is the result of land use change induced by urbanization. Rapid urbanization, driven by demographic and economic growth, places additional demands on natural resources, leading to changes in land use, particularly in megacities. Due to urbanization and unplanned human activities, the vegetation of the earth's surface is in constant decline, leading to changes in the environment, especially in the earth's ecosystem at local, regional and global scales. Future increases in climate change and urbanization will exacerbate urban heat islands, especially during heatwaves. Similar to any other cities across the world, different urban areas in Ethiopia are affected by climate change. Dire Dawa city has experienced massive urbanization in terms of population growth, fastest rates of urbanization with a 50 percent growth rate and major changes in the LULC has been a drastic increase in areal extent and coverage. Additionally observed surface improvements such as urban growth, settlement expansion and Construction of new built up or dwelling units in the city, socioeconomic factors, particularly in the context of anthropogenic activities have modified and will continue to modify the case study's microclimate. Despite variations among kebeles, Dire Dawa has population density of 350 people per square kilometer and a growth rate of 4.42 %. As a result, such increasing changes are responsible for increasing surface temperatures, can cause and pose a threat to the city's microclimate.

Book excerpt: This research assessed landuse changes and trends in vegetation cover in the Sandveld, using remote sensing images. Landsat TM satellite images of 1990, 2004 and 2007 were classified using the maximum likelihood classifier into seven landuse classes, namely water, agriculture, fire patches, natural vegetation, wetlands, disturbed veld, and open sands. Change detection using remote sensing algorithms and landscape metrics was performed on these multi-temporal landuse maps using the Land Change Modeller and Patch Analyst respectively. Markov stochastic modelling techniques were used to predict future scenarios in landuse change based on the classified images and their transitional probabilities. MODIS NDVI multi-temporal datasets with a 16day temporal resolution were used to assess seasonal and annual trends in vegetation cover using time series analysis (PCA and time profiling).Results indicated that natural vegetation decreased from 46% to 31% of the total landscape between 1990 and 2007 and these biodiversity losses were attributed to an increasing agriculture footprint. Predicted future scenario based on transitional probabilities revealed a continual loss in natural habitat and increase in the agricultural footprint. Time series analysis results (principal components and temporal profiles) suggested that the landscape has a high degree of overall dynamic change with pronounced inter and intra-annual changes and there was an overall increase in greenness associated with increase in agricultural activity. The study concluded that without future conservation interventions natural habitats would continue to disappear, a condition that will impact heavily on biodiversity and significant waterdependent ecosystems such as wetlands. This has significant implications for the long-term provision of water from ground water reserves and for the overall sustainability of current agricultural practices.

The projected warming of 1. 4 to 5. 8° C by 2100 and the related changes in rainfall pattern, rise in sea-level and increased frequency of extreme events (such as drought, hurricanes and storms) are likely to threaten food security, increase fresh water scarcity, lead to decline in biodiversity, increase occurrence of vector-borne diseases, cause flooding of coastal settlements, etc. Recognizing the potential threat of severe disruptions, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development was organized in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to begin to address ways to reduce these impacts, which led to the formulation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. This Convention and the subsequent Kyoto Protocol recognize “the common but differentiated responsibility” of developing and industrialized countries in addressing climate change. Developing countries thus have a unique role to play in formulating a sound, reasoned, and well informed response to the threat of climate change.
