Book Spatio Temporal Pattern Formation

Download or read book Spatio Temporal Pattern Formation written by Daniel Walgraef and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spatio-temporal patterns appear almost everywhere in nature, and their description and understanding still raise important and basic questions. However, if one looks back 20 or 30 years, definite progress has been made in the modeling of insta bilities, analysis of the dynamics in their vicinity, pattern formation and stability, quantitative experimental and numerical analysis of patterns, and so on. Universal behaviors of complex systems close to instabilities have been determined, leading to the wide interdisciplinarity of a field that is now referred to as nonlinear science or science of complexity, and in which initial concepts of dissipative structures or synergetics are deeply rooted. In pioneering domains related to hydrodynamics or chemical instabilities, the interactions between experimentalists and theoreticians, sometimes on a daily basis, have been a key to progress. Everyone in the field praises the role played by the interactions and permanent feedbacks between ex perimental, numerical, and analytical studies in the achievements obtained during these years. Many aspects of convective patterns in normal fluids, binary mixtures or liquid crystals are now understood and described in this framework. The generic pres ence of defects in extended systems is now well established and has induced new developments in the physics of laser with large Fresnel numbers. Last but not least, almost 40 years after his celebrated paper, Turing structures have finally been ob tained in real-life chemical reactors, triggering anew intense activity in the field of reaction-diffusion systems.

Book Dynamical Systems Approach to One dimensional Spatiotemporal Chaos A Cyclist s View

Download or read book Dynamical Systems Approach to One dimensional Spatiotemporal Chaos A Cyclist s View written by Yueheng Lan and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We propose a dynamical systems approach to the study of weak turbulence(spatiotemporal chaos) based on the periodic orbit theory, emphasizing the role of recurrent patterns and coherent structures. After a brief review of the periodic orbit theory and its application to low-dimensional dynamics, we discuss its possible extension to study dynamics of spatially extended systems. The discussion is three-fold. First, we introduce a novel variational scheme for finding periodic orbits in high-dimensional systems. Second, we prove rigorously the existence of periodic structures (modulated amplitude waves) near the first instability of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, and check their role in pattern formation. Third, we present the extensive numerical exploration of the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky system in the chaotic regime: structure of the equilibrium solutions, our search for the shortest periodic orbits, description of the chaotic invariant set in terms of intrinsic coordinates and return maps on the Poincare section.

Book excerpt: The 4th Experimental Chaos Conference was a forum for members of the scientific and engineering communities to discuss recent developments in, and techniques of, experimental nonlinear dynamics. The focus of this important conference was on actual realizations of nonlinear and chaotic systems. The latest developments in applications of nonlinear dynamics and chaos were presented, the requirement being that all presentations were actually implemented in experiments or devices. The areas covered were spatio-temporal patterns, optical chaos, biological dynamics, communication and synchronization, control of chaotic systems, mechanical dynamics, fluid dynamics, quantum chaos, and chaotic condensed matter systems.

Book Biological Systems Nonlinear Dynamics Approach

Download or read book Biological Systems Nonlinear Dynamics Approach written by Jorge Carballido-Landeira and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-29 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects recent advances in the field of nonlinear dynamics in biological systems. Focusing on medical applications as well as more fundamental questions in biochemistry, it presents recent findings in areas such as control in chemically driven reaction-diffusion systems, electrical wave propagation through heart tissue, neural network growth, chiral symmetry breaking in polymers and mechanochemical pattern formation in the cytoplasm, particularly in the context of cardiac cells. It is a compilation of works, including contributions from international scientists who attended the “2nd BCAM Workshop on Nonlinear Dynamics in Biological Systems,” held at the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics, Bilbao in September 2016. Embracing diverse disciplines and using multidisciplinary approaches – including theoretical concepts, simulations and experiments – these contributions highlight the nonlinear nature of biological systems in order to be able to reproduce their complex behavior. Edited by the conference organizers and featuring results that represent recent findings and not necessarily those presented at the conference, the book appeals to applied mathematicians, biophysicists and computational biologists.
