Adaptation of Captive Chimpanzees Pan Troglodytes to Free Ranging in a Natural Temperate Environment

Book excerpt: We studied the ecological impact and adaptation of 18 captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) from differing origins, rearing and housing situations as they made the transition from cages to a 6-acre tract of forest (Habitat) at the Chimp Haven retirement sanctuary in Caddo Parish, Louisiana. Before release in summer 2005, we permanently tagged all trees in the Habitat and did a line-transect to sample the canopy, understory and lianas and a neighboring control plot. Before release, we presented the group with eight novel species of edible, freshly-cut vegetation (we knew they would encounter in the Habitat) in bundled combinations and recorded how the apes used each taxa. We followed their use of these familiar and any non-familiar forms of vegetation during the post-release period in the Habitat. We used scan-sampling to collect data on activity budget (including locomotion and social behavior), spatial use and proximity before and after the release, and kept track of climate variables during the entire study period. Ulmus foliage was preferred to all other forms of vegetation for both eating and non-eating use during the browse study and in the Habitat. Based on a re-sampling of the Habitat and control plots in 2008, the saplings and lianas showed greater impact due to chimpanzee presence, while the trees were less affected. Wild-born females used the vegetation the most by foraging, climbing trees, eating familiar and non-familiar plants, building beds and moving in the Habitat, compared with males and captive-born females. Although differences in forest structure, advanced age, absence of resource competition and the minimal influence of neighboring communities hindered comparisons to wild chimpanzee behavior, grouping pattern and same-sex associations approached natural norms in this group after their release into the Habitat. These data show that a pre- versus post-release environmental impact assessment is critical in preserving the integrity of the vegetation structure and provide encouraging evidence that aged, captive chimpanzees of varied life-history backgrounds can adapt to existing in a temperate, forested environment, without doing large-scale damage to it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of nesting behaviours of free-ranging apes typically focus on ecological variables such as preferred tree species and areas within the home range, heights of nests, and nest group sizes. However, nesting in captive apes is rarely studied, despite the ubiquity of this sleep-related behaviour. The paucity of field data is often attributed to the inherent difficulty in observing what is essentially a nighttime behaviour. Captive settings can provide researchers with an ideal opportunity to record nesting and sleep-related behaviours, yet such research on captive apes is also scant. Topics addressed include current practices in zoos regarding conditions for sleep in great apes, the potential effects of social and environmental factors on sleep site selection, the motor patterns involved in nest construction, preferred nesting structures and substrates, and nocturnal behaviours. This thesis documented and empirically tested hypotheses concerning nest-related activities in captive chimpanzees, with an aim to generate practical recommendations for enclosure design, sleeping areas, sleeping structures, and nesting substrates that have implications for the welfare of captive apes. As with the few reports that already exist, most chimpanzees in this research frequently constructed night nests. When building a nest, some techniques appeared to be universal across individuals and groups, where others were group-specific or occasionally characteristic of only certain individuals. An experiment showed that specific materials are preferred over others for nest building. Many chimpanzees appeared to express persistent preferences for particular sleeping sites, and for some this was to maintain proximity to kin or other closely bonded individuals. In one group, individual sleeping site preferences changed across seasons, although again this was subject to individual differences. Video analyses of nighttime behaviours demonstrated that, although nests/sleep sites are primarily used for rest subsequent to retirement, a number of social and non-social activities were performed throughout the night. In conjunction with analysis of postural and orientation shifts, these data are unique in describing the nocturnal behaviours of chimpanzees out with a laboratory setting. Several aspects of nest-related behaviours showed a high degree of inter-and intra-group variation. Although this cautions against generalising findings across captive populations, research of this type has applied implications for the management of captive ape species, and can add to our as-yet meagre understanding of their nest and sleep-related behaviours.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primatology, Ethics and Trauma offers an analytical re-examination of the research conducted into the linguistic abilities of the Oklahoma chimpanzees, uncovering the historical reality of the research. It has been 50 years since the first language experiments on chimpanzees. Robert Ingersoll was one of the researchers from 1975 to 1983. He is well known for being one of the main carers and best friend of the chimpanzee, Nim Chimpsky, but there were other chimpanzees in the University of Oklahoma's Institute for Primate Studies, including Washoe, Moja, Kelly, Booee, and Onan, who were taught sign language in the quest to discover whether language is learned or innate in humans. Antonina Anna Scarnà’s expertise in language acquisition and neuroscience offers a vehicle for critical evaluation of those studies. Ingersoll and Scarnà investigate how this research failed to address the emotional needs of the animals. Research into trauma has made scientific advances since those studies. It is time to consider the research from a different perspective, examining the neglect and cruelty that was inflicted on those animals in the name of psychological science. This book re-examines those cases, addressing directly the suffering and traumatic experiences endured by the captive chimpanzees, in particular the female chimpanzee, Washoe, and her resultant inability to be a competent mother. This book discusses the unethical nature of the studies in the context of recent research on trauma and offers a specific and direct psychological message, proposing to finally close the door on the language side of these chimpanzee studies. This book is a novel and groundbreaking account. It will be of interest to lay readers and academics alike. Those working as research, experimental, and clinical psychologists will find this book of interest, as will psychotherapists, linguists, anthropologists, historians of science and primatologists, as well as those involved in primate sanctuary and conservation.
