Book Spatial Planning and Environmental Assessment in Indonesia

Download or read book Spatial Planning and Environmental Assessment in Indonesia written by Djoko Suroso and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government of Indonesia has attempted to implement sustainable development since the 1970s through various strategies, including spatial planning and Environmental Impact Assessment. Nevertheless, the strong economic performance that has characterised Indonesia for most of this period, has been achieved at the cost of serious environmental degradation and social problems. It is clear that there is an urgent need for further review of the instruments through which environmental concerns are integrated into resource use decisions. The examination of the spatial planning system in Indonesia reveals a series of inadequacies in terms of its ability to support sustainable development. The 1992 Spatial Use Management Act (SUMA) and its implementing regulations contain strong environmental commitment. However, as it only governs spatial planning in general it is inadequate for dealing with planning at local levels where decisions involving major environmental impacts are made. The research shows that planning is not integrated and does not demonstrate effective concern for the environment.

Download or read book Spatial Planning and Resilience Following Disasters written by Jaroslav Tesliar and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population shifts and an increase in the number of both natural and manmade disasters are having a profound effect on urban and rural habitats globally. Discussing for the first time the role of spatial planning after significant disasters, this book brings together the experiences and knowledge of international contributors from academia, research, policy, and practice to highlight ongoing efforts to improve spatial resilience across the globe and predict future trends. Comparisons of responses in five countries--the United States, Japan, Indonesia, Slovakia, and Germany--point to the varied influence of significant disasters on spatial planning and resiliency under different legal, administrative, and cultural frameworks, enabling contributors to draw conclusions about the transferability of approaches between different countries.

Book excerpt: This publication summarizes the strengths, challenges, opportunities, and risks characterizing the prospects for integrated water resources management in Indonesia. Integrated water resources management planning is essential for sustainable growth. Indonesia’s rapid economic growth, increasing populations, and trends in developing and urbanizing environments are leading to potential conflicts as more users claim the same water resources. Understanding these conditions may provide decision makers with more insight to optimize the country’s water resources potential using available and state-of-the-art methodologies and tools for river basin planning. This book was released on 2013-06-10 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1980s, and especially since the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, there has been a substantial extension in the adoption and use of Environmental Assessment (EA) procedures in developing countries and countries in transition (low and middle income countries). However, few existing texts in environmental assessment or development studies have reflected this trend sufficiently, until this publication. Divided into two main parts: * EA Principles, Processes and Practice. * Country and Institutional Studies of EA Procedures and Practice. This book explains the essentials of environmental impact association in the context of developing countries and assesses its importance to both developed and developing countries.

Book excerpt: Indonesia has been remarkably successful in achieving its development objectives over the past 25 years. Although it is still a low-income country, its tradition of sound economic management has laid the foundations for continued progress in the decades ahead. As the Indonesian government formulates its second long-term development plan, issues of environmental quality and sustainability raise new concerns. This report examines environmental issues, assesses their implications for the achievement of development goals, and suggests an action plan that would help to ensure that those goals will be met. The analysis of current environmental conditions and trends and of the likely impact of future growth leads to three main conclusions: - Future growth will depend increasingly on Indonesia's stock of key natural resources and the sustainability of critical ecosystems. -The industrial sector will continue to expand in urban areas, where growing congestion and industrial pollution pose an immediate threat to health and human welfare. This will eventually lead to negative effects on the economy. -As a result of rapid growth, environment- related issues of equity among the population will become increasingly important.
