Book Spatial Models of Heterogeneous Switching Costs

Download or read book Spatial Models of Heterogeneous Switching Costs written by Paolo Siciliani and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence of sticky, often labelled 'unengaged', consumers is arguably one of the most intractable issues faced by competition regulators, in that it entrenches incumbency advantage. We develop a spatial linear model of heterogeneous switching costs that allows for asymmetric distributions of heterogeneous switching costs. We not only model uniform pricing and history-based price discrimination, but also the impact of regulatory intervention aimed at making it easier for customers to be upgraded to a better tariff from their current service provider, something we call 'leakage'. Finally, we analyse firms' incentive to adopt history-based price discrimination and voluntarily permit 'leakage'

Book Heterogenous Switching Costs

Download or read book Heterogenous Switching Costs written by Gary Biglaiser and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We consider a simple two period model where consumers have different switching costs. Before the market opens, there was an incumbent who sold to all consumers. We identify the equilibrium both with Stackelberg and Bertrand competition and show how the presence of low switching cost consumers benefits the incumbent, despite the fact that it never sells to any of them.

Book Spatial Econometrics

Download or read book Spatial Econometrics written by Giuseppe Arbia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-11-14 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spatial Econometrics is a rapidly evolving field born from the joint efforts of economists, statisticians, econometricians and regional scientists. The book provides the reader with a broad view of the topic by including both methodological and application papers. Indeed the application papers relate to a number of diverse scientific fields ranging from hedonic models of house pricing to demography, from health care to regional economics, from the analysis of R&D spillovers to the study of retail market spatial characteristics. Particular emphasis is given to regional economic applications of spatial econometrics methods with a number of contributions specifically focused on the spatial concentration of economic activities and agglomeration, regional paths of economic growth, regional convergence of income and productivity and the evolution of regional employment. Most of the papers appearing in this book were solicited from the International Workshop on Spatial Econometrics and Statistics held in Rome (Italy) in 2006.

Book Heterogeneous Firms Agglomeration and Economic Geography

Download or read book Heterogeneous Firms Agglomeration and Economic Geography written by Richard E. Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Melitz-style model of monopolistic competition with heterogeneous firms is integrated into a simple New Economic Geography model to show that the standard assumption of identical firms is neither necessary nor innocuous. We show that re-locating to the big region is most attractive for the most productive firms; this implies interesting results for empirical work and policy analysis. A 'selection effect' means standard empirical measures overestimate agglomeration economies. A 'sorting effect' means that a regional policy induces the highest productivity firms to move to the core while the lowest productivity firms to move to the periphery. We also show that heterogeneity dampens the home market effect.

Book Green Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

Download or read book Green Heterogeneous Wireless Networks written by Muhammad Ismail and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the emerging research topic "green (energy efficient) wireless networks" which has drawn huge attention recently from both academia and industry. This topic is highly motivated due to important environmental, financial, and quality-of-experience (QoE) considerations. Specifically, the high energy consumption of the wireless networks manifests in approximately 2% of all CO2 emissions worldwide. This book presents the authors’ visions and solutions for deployment of energy efficient (green) heterogeneous wireless communication networks. The book consists of three major parts. The first part provides an introduction to the "green networks" concept, the second part targets the green multi-homing resource allocation problem, and the third chapter presents a novel deployment of device-to-device (D2D) communications and its successful integration in Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets). The book is novel in that it specifically targets green networking in a heterogeneous wireless medium, which represents the current and future wireless communication medium faced by the existing and next generation communication networks. The book focuses on multi-homing resource allocation, exploiting network cooperation, and integrating different and new network technologies (radio frequency and VLC), expanding the network coverage and integrating new device centric communication paradigms such as D2D Communications. Whilst the book discusses a significant research topic supported with advanced mathematical analysis, the resulting algorithms and solutions are explained and summarized in a way that is easy to follow and grasp. This book is suitable for networking and telecommunications engineers, researchers in industry and academia, as well as students and instructors.

Book Switching Costs and Resale at a Loss in the Internet Industry

Download or read book Switching Costs and Resale at a Loss in the Internet Industry written by Besma Labidi and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we study the effect of switching costs on the pricing strategies of Internet Service Providers in the case of price discrimination between locked-in consumers and new consumers. By considering a duopoly model with two periods and a spatial differentiation between products, we find three new results relatively to the existing literature. Firstly, in the case where only one firm is active in the first period, high switching costs allow it to keep its monopoly power in the second period. Secondly, we show that consumers can become locked-in even for low switching costs. Thirdly, we prove that there exists a certain threshold of switching costs, depending on the transportation cost, from which firms practice the strategy of Resale At a Loss.
