Book excerpt: Previous research in the field of geography has generally supported the contention that much of the information that man receives from and about his external environment is filtered through, and distorted in, the very mind that receives the data. For the observer, this filtered information comes to constitute the objective world. Behavioral geography has concentrated on examining this complex phenomenon, seeking to isolate and to understand the influence of those components of external reality that pass these filters, and how they have been altered in the very act of being perceived and assimilated. The argument is made that if scientists can come to understand how and why human minds process information they have received from the outside, and can identify what is transmuted and used, it then becomes possible not only to explain the basis on which individual choices are made by those inhabiting cognized environments, but also to shape the environments themselves so as to influence behavior within them.

The book is intended primarily as a state-of-the art review of mainly European research on these two fastly growing problem areas. As a consequence of this decision, the book contains a selection of papers that differs in terms of focus, level of sophistication and conceptual background. Evidently, the dissimination of ideas and computer software is a time-related phenomenon, which in the European context is amplified by differences in language, the profile of geography and the formal training of geographers. The book reflects such differences. It would have been impossible to produce this book without the support of the various European study groups on theoretical and quantitative geography. Without their help the meetings from which this volumes originates would not have been held in the first place. The identification of the determinants and effects of the households' location choice is necessary for both entrepreneurial and policy planners who attempt to predict (or regulate) the future demand for location-specific commodities, such as infrastructure, land, or housing, and the supply of labor. Microeconomic studies of the spatial behavior of individuals have typically focused upon the demand for a single, homogeneous, yet location-specific com 2 modity (such as land! or housing ) or their supply of labor3 and investigated the formation of location-specific prices and wages in the presence of transportation and migration costs or analyzed the individual-and location-specific character istics triggering spatial rather than quantitative or temporal adjustments. In contrast to many theoretical analyses, empirical studies of the causes or con sequences of individual demand for location-specific commodities have often considered several "brands" of a heterogeneous good that are offered at various locations, are perfect substitutes, and may be produced by varying production 4 technologies. lCf.
