Download or read book Spatial Characteristics of Eastern White Pine and Red Pine Forests in Ontario written by Ajith H. Perera and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1993 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study quantified the landscape characteristics of eastern white pine and red pine forests in Ontario using a combination of LANDSAT TM imagery and aerial photographs to develop a spatial data base of 275,000 sq km. Analyses on spatial distribution, representativeness, configuration, and fragmentation were conducted in a GIS environment. Results are presented by pine type by both Hills' ecological hierarchy and the administrative hierarchy of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.

Book Development of a Spatial Data Base of Red and White Pine Old growth Forest in Ontario East

Download or read book Development of a Spatial Data Base of Red and White Pine Old growth Forest in Ontario East written by Spectranalysis Inc and published by Sault Ste. Marie : The Institute. This book was released on 1993 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1991, the development of a spatial forest data base over most of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Region was commissioned to provide the thematic basis for studies conducted for the forest fragmentation and biodiversity project under the forest landscape ecology program. The data base included a range of forest and vegetation cover classes, with the red pine and white pine stands restricted to those over 50 years of age. A method combining remote sensing and geographic information system technology was used for the project. This report describes the northern and southern sectors of the Eastern Ontario segment.

Book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape

Download or read book Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape written by Ajith H. Perera and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing popularity of the broad, landscape-scale approach to forest management represents a dramatic shift from the traditional, stand-based focus on timber production. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape responds to the increasing need of forest policy developers, planners, and managers for an integrated, comprehensive perspective on ecological landscapes. The book examines the "big picture" of ecological patterns and processes through a case study of the vast managed forest region in Ontario. The contributors synthesize current landscape ecological knowledge of this area and look at gaps and future research directions from several points of view: spatial patterns, ecological functions and processes, natural disturbances, and ecological responses to disturbance. They also discuss the integration of landscape ecological knowledge into policies of forest management policies, particularly with respect to Ontario's legislative goals of forest sustainability. Ecology of a Managed Terrestrial Landscape is the first book to describe the landscape ecology of a continuously forested landscape in a comprehensive manner. It is written for instructors and students in forest management, wildlife ecology, and landscape ecology, and for forest managers, planners, and policy developers in North America.

Book The Assessment and Modeling of Regeneration Dynamics for Eastern White Pine Pinus Strobus L

Download or read book The Assessment and Modeling of Regeneration Dynamics for Eastern White Pine Pinus Strobus L written by Jerome Allan Krueger and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study represents an analysis of regeneration processes for eastern white pine (Pinus strohus L.). The objective is to develop an integrated approach to evaluate the influence of factors that, alone and in combination, determine regeneration outcomes. This study is composed of three sections. The first chapter is a literature review of white pine regeneration dynamics. The purpose is to present a process for understanding the regeneration process of a single species and present a conceptual approach to integrated evaluation of influential variables. Six interrelated ecological factors (seed tree density, competition, disturbance, seedbed conditions, soils, and damage agents) were identified and their impact on the regeneration process is evaluated. A conceptual model of the integration approach and two examples of how this approach can be utilized in assessing regeneration operations are presented.

Book A Comparison of Small Mammal Communities in Old Pine Forests and Other Common Forest Types in Sault Ste Marie District

Download or read book A Comparison of Small Mammal Communities in Old Pine Forests and Other Common Forest Types in Sault Ste Marie District written by Scott L. Jones and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1993 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description of the small mammal communities inhabiting old pine forests and the other forest types common in Schembri, Way-White, and Wlasy Townships in the Territorial District of Algoma, about 100 km east of the City of Sault Ste. Marie. The study identified whether old pine forests represented unique habitats for small mammals, and predicted the impact of timber harvest on small mammal communities. Small mammals were collected using Victor mouse traps in cut and uncut stands of old growth white pine, hard maple, boreal mixedwood, and black spruce.

Book Early Successional Processes of Eastern White Pine and Red Pine in the Great Lakes St Lawrence Forest

Download or read book Early Successional Processes of Eastern White Pine and Red Pine in the Great Lakes St Lawrence Forest written by Helen Maureen Kershaw and published by Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1993 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews the literature relating to red pine and eastern white pine succession in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Forest from establishment to age 50. Research areas included red and white pine autecology, early red and white pine establishment and survival, post-disturbance natural successional patterns, and the effect of past and current management practices on early red and white pine survival and establishment. Professional foresters, working in Ontario, were consulted to determine current forest management practices.

Puttock and published by Sault Ste Marie, Ont. : Great Lakes Forestry Centre. This book was released on 1995 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outlines the development and use of a compatible growth and yield model for red pine and white pine stands under a uniform shelterwood silvicultural system in Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario. The model incorporates stand age, residual (post-harvest) basal area, site index, composition index (proportion of pine basal area), and projected age as predictor variables for estimating residual gross merchantable pine volume and for projecting basal area and gross merchantable pine volume growth over a given time period. Model results are presented for periods up to 25 years following uniform shelterwood harvesting and for stand ages of 40 to 130 years. The appendix contains yield curves and yield tables.
