Book Mortality Assessment of Atlantic Sea Scallops Placopecten Magellanicus from Gray meat Disease a Thesis in Marine Science and Technology

Download or read book Mortality Assessment of Atlantic Sea Scallops Placopecten Magellanicus from Gray meat Disease a Thesis in Marine Science and Technology written by Megan M. Levesque and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) fishery is the most valuable wild scallop fishery in the world. Landings are primarily' adductor muscles, which are ideally creamy white and firm. Recently, significant numbers of dark brown to gray, flaccid and stringy-meats, caused by an apicomplexan, have been caught in areas of Georges Bank and the mid-Atlantic, and are a concern for the industry and management. To investigate the impacts of this disease, a technique to isolate gray from white meat scallops using anesthesia was developed. A four-month laboratory study was conducted comparing mortality rates and shell height-meat weight ratios of healthy and diseased scallops. The density of parasites with decreased meat quality was quantified using histological analysis, and GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) software.Furthermore, age and frequency of infestation by boring sponge (Cliona vastifica) and boring worm (Polydora sp.) were examined with their association to meat quality. Significantly higher mortality in gray-meat scallops compared to white-meat scallops correlated with an increase in the number of parasite nuclei and boring intensity. Additionally, smaller meat weights and extensive myodegeneration were observed with higher levels of infection. Based on these findings, it is important to consider diseased scallops in formulating applied harvestable biomass estimates and in future management strategies. Three general shell height-meat weight relationships are used in the stock assessment for sea scallops; however, a change in this relationship represents a change in biomass estimates. Gray-meat indicates imminent mortality, which also changes the estimate of natural mortality used in stock assessments. The frequency of diseased individuals affects the effort/day as well as the estimate of landings/day used to distribute allocations in the fishery. Understanding the impacts of this disease and how to manage the fishery in its presence is important for the future of the fishery.

Book The Impacts of Spatial and Temporal Variability of Larval Transport on the Distribution and Population Dynamics of the Sea Scallop Placopecten Magellanicus

Download or read book The Impacts of Spatial and Temporal Variability of Larval Transport on the Distribution and Population Dynamics of the Sea Scallop Placopecten Magellanicus written by Charles Grant Law and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project focuses on the population dynamics of sea scallops in the Middle Atlantic Bight and Georges Bank/Southern New England regions. Most sea scallop biomass now occurs within the confines of large federally mandated closed areas and the fishery has moved toward a rotational harvesting strategy. With this dissertation we develop a biophysical model that enables the role of physical variability in this system, and how it interacts with life history processes to shape local and global population dynamics for sea scallops. The modeling effort will link hind-cast circulation simulations, an individual- based model for larval drift and an adult, size-structured, spatial population model. The results of these modeling efforts are compiled and interpreted in such a way as to be useful to managers of the sea scallop fishery. The final goal is to provide information about the impacts of environmental factors on sea scallop population dynamics so that the fishery can be managed proactively instead of reactively. Understanding the connections between sea scallop sub-populations, and how they vary from year to year, should be valuable in assessing the impacts of various real-world management strategies. The thesis is organized in four chapters: the first is an introduction, the second develops the dispersal kernels, the third integrates them into a metapopulation model, and the fourth describes the entire project in a style appropriate for a technical magazine.

Book Current Resource Conditions in Georges Bank and Mid Atlantic Sea Scallop Populations

Download or read book Current Resource Conditions in Georges Bank and Mid Atlantic Sea Scallop Populations written by Han-Lin Lai and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1996 Northeast Fisheries Science Center sea scallop survey was conducted during July 29 - August 9 and August 15 - 26 using the RIV ALBATROSS IV. The purpose of the survey was to monitor trends in abundance, population composition, and recruitment of sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) resources in the Mid-Atlantic and Georges Bank regions in depths between 28-110 meters (15 to 60 fin). A total of 429 sampling tows were conducted during the 1996 survey. Survey indices of relative abundance (stratified mean number per tow) and biomass (stratified mean meat weight per tow) were calculated for the principal scallop areas within the Mid-Atlantic and USA Georges Bank regions. Indices were derived for: 1) pre-recruits [80 meat count]; 2) recruits or harvestable-sized scallops [70 mm shell height; 80 meat count]; and 3) total scallops [all sizes]. In addition, percentage distributions of the number of scallops within five meat count intervals were calculated for each stratum, area, and region. Meat count refers to the number of scallop meats per pound. Results of the 1996 survey indicate that the indices of relative abundance and biomass in the Mid-Atlantic region decreased substantially from the relatively high levels observed in 1995. In the USA Georges Bank region, the indices of relative abundance and biomass increased substantially from the 1995 value. The most substantial increases of abundance and biomass indices occurred in the Northern Edge and Peak area; however, the indices decreased in the Southeast Part area between 1995 and 1996. . The Mid-Atlantic scallop resource had a high proportion of small scallops in 1996: 17% of the scallops caught were >80 count and 56% were in the 80-40 count category. Of the harvestable biomass
