Book Spatial and Temporal Variability of Precipitation and Chemistry

Download or read book Spatial and Temporal Variability of Precipitation and Chemistry written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional and larger-scale models of pollutant transport and deposition generally, by practical necessity, must be limited in output of precipitation rate and chemical composition to values for selected time intervals representing areas on the order of 10[sup 4] km[sup 2]. Naturally, it is of some concern that these values be reasonably representative of natural variations both in time and space. This question may be approached through field studies involving detailed spatial (using a network of samplers on the model grid scale) and temporal (using sequential sampling) measurements. This paper presents an initial analysis, using simple statistical concepts, of data bases from such a field study, the Frontal Boundary Study (FBS).

Book Scales and Global Change

Download or read book Scales and Global Change written by Thomas Rosswall and published by . This book was released on 1988-10-12 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global environment is being significantly affected by human activity. Changes in vegetation cover will affect the global hydrological cycle, production of "greenhouse gases" will lead to climate changes, changes in atmospheric chemistry can have drastic effects on terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems, and man-made chemicals decrease the Antarctic ozone layer. In order to address these global issues in a scientifically meaningful way, a new earth system science is needed, which takes a truly multi-disciplinary approach. However, when linking observations from different spatial and temporal scales, fundamental problems are encountered. If the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme: a Study of Global Change is to be successful, scale problems have to be faced and new approaches developed. This book is the first to address scaling problems both within individual disciplines and between disciplines, and represents an important first step in developing strategies for "Global Change" studies.

Book Nucleation and Atmospheric Aerosols 1996

Download or read book Nucleation and Atmospheric Aerosols 1996 written by M. Kulmala and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-08-13 with total page 995 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of papers presented at the 14th International Conference on Nucleation and Atmospheric Aerosols, Helsinki, 26 - 30 August 1996. The first conference of this series took place in Dublin (1955); second, Basel and Locarno (1956); third, Cambridge (1958); fourth, Frankfurt am Main and Heidelberg (1961); fifth, Clermont-Ferrand and Tolouse (1963); sixth, Albany and University Park (1966); seventh, Prague and Vienna (1969); eighth, Leningrad (1973); ninth, Galway (1977); tenth, Hamburg (1981); eleventh Budapest (1984); twelfth, Vienna (1988); thirteenth, Salt Lake City (1992). The Atmospheric Aerosol conference has been held jointly with the Nucleation Symposium since 1988 in Vienna in order to stimulate contacts between researchers in these closely related fields. The broad nature of the meeting and the scientific program resulted in 32 countries submitting papers for presentation. Covering both experimental and theoretical studies these papers are divided amongst the chapters on Nucleation, Stratospheric Aerosols and Ice Nucleation, Tropospheric Aerosols and Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Interaction. In addition to these contributed papers invitations to present a plenary lecture on topics of particular current interest were accepted by P.J. Crutzen, J. Gras, J.L. Katz, A.A. Lushnikov, D. Oxtoby, J.E. Penner, Th. Peter, F. Raes, S.E. Schwartz, R. Strey and G. Vali. These plenary papers together with the contributed papers provide a well-balanced perspective of the current research over the entire field and highlight some important issues.

Book Spatial and Temporal Variability and Predictability of Rainfall

Download or read book Spatial and Temporal Variability and Predictability of Rainfall written by Tesfaye Wossen and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture is under the full scale influence of climate in which rainfall forms the dominant component mainly because of its effect on crop production in countries whose economy is largely depends on agriculture. The spatial and temporal distribution of rainfall is, thus, the most important determinant of crop production levels from year to year as a result of its erratic and unreliable nature. It can gave the influence of El Nino Southern Oscillation event and other global oceanic and atmospheric phenomena play a great role in climate variation on inter annual and/or inter seasonal scales. The book also insights the importance of the knowledge of water requirement for a given area in order to understand the actual and potential benefits of the area. This belief, however, that there exists sufficient knowledge in determining the water requirement of any crop during all growth stages at any location. The information generated from this study will have valuable contribution in advising the farmers, extension agents, agronomists, and policy makers, other groups involved in crop production and as base line for future study.

Book excerpt: Environmental Chemistry is a relatively young science. Interest in this subject, however, is growing very rapidly and, although no agreement has been reached as yet about the exact content and limits of this interdisciplinary discipline, there appears to be increasing interest in seeing environmental topics which are based on chemistry embodied in this subject. One of the first objectives of Environmental Chemistry must be the study of the environment and of natural chemical processes which occur in the environment. A major purpose of this series on Environmental Chemistry, therefore, is to present a reasonably uniform view of various aspects of the chemistry of the environment and chemical reactions occurring in the environment. The industrial activities of man have given a new dimension to Environmental Chemistry. We have now synthesized and described over five million chemical compounds and chemical industry produces about hundred and fifty million tons of synthetic chemicals annually. We ship billions of tons of oil per year and through mining operations and other geophysical modifications, large quantities of inorganic and organic materials are released from their natural deposits. Cities and metropolitan areas of up to 15 million inhabitants produce large quantities of waste in relatively small and confined areas. Much of the chemical products and waste products of modern society are released into the environment either during production, storage, transport, use or ultimate disposal. These released materials participate in natural cycles and reactions and frequently lead to interference and disturbance of natural systems.
