Book excerpt: [Truncated abstract] Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) is a technique that can be used to capture and store water in aquifers for later reuse. This method recycles water that would normally be lost or discarded to the environment. MAR has been observed to have the potential for improving the quality of recharged water through a combination of physical, chemical and biological processes. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in groundwater microbial population structure during MAR and the major influences that drive these population changes. Biogeochemical MAR studies have the potential to assist in the improved prediction of the removal of contaminants such as nutrients, pathogens and trace organics from the recharged water. Biological clogging during recharge also has the potential to overwhelm an aquifers ability to process wastewater thus reducing the hydraulic conductivity of the aquifer. Therefore further research into the spatial and temporal biogeochemical processes that occur during MAR is required. The geochemical and microbial population dynamics of two contrasting MAR techniques were investigated at two different geographical locations (Perth, Western Australia and Adelaide, South Australia). These MAR sites contained aquifers of dissimilar properties that were recharged with wastewater that contrasted in water quality. The Perth MAR site received secondary treated effluent which continuously infiltrated the unsaturated zone into an unconfined aquifer aided by infiltration galleries. Reclaimed water was extracted from a well at distance from the infiltration gallery. ... Notably the background and recovered water was most dissimilar in microbial and chemical population structure to that described for the infiltration gallery and injection well. Microbial and chemical evidence suggested that the background and extraction well groundwater were unaffected by plume migration. These results suggested that extraction well groundwater was similar in quality to that of ambient groundwater. Significant geochemical and microbial changes of secondary treated effluent during infiltration and lateral movement through aquifer were implicated in addition to the forced hydraulic gradient created from extracting fives time the volume of infiltrating wastewater. This study demonstrated that microbial populations and the geochemical processes associated with MAR can be studied and compared. Multivariate statistical methodology greatly simplified a vast array of dynamic biogeochemical information that could be dissected for meaningful interpretation over distance and time. The study evaluated the major biogeochemical influences which resulted in microbial and geochemical changes where it was noted that microbial populations were more dynamic than geochemical variation over time. Additionally biogeochemical comparative analysis indicated that microbial populations could change in population structure before a shift in aquifer geochemistry was detected. It is anticipated that the results from this study will benefit further research into the biogeochemical processes involved in water quality changes (e.g. nutrient removal, pathogen decay and biodegradation of trace organics) as well as controlling biological clogging of MAR schemes.

Book excerpt: This high-resolution biogeochemical study investigated spatial and temporal variability in the mixing interface zones within a wetland-aquifer system near a municipal landfill in the city of Norman, Oklahoma. Steep biogeochemical gradients indicating zones of enhanced microbial activity (e.g. iron/sulfate reduction and fermentation) were found at centimeter-scale hydrological and lithological interfaces. The small resolution study was achieved by combining passive diffusion samplers with capillary electrophoresis for chemical analysis. The spatial and temporal variability of biogeochemical processes found at the interfaces was evaluated in a depth profile over a period of three years. Correlations between geochemical parameters were determined using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and the principal factors obtained were interpreted as a dominant biogeochemical process. Factors scores were mapped by date and depth to determine the spatial-temporal associations of the dominant processes. Fermentation was the process controlling the greatest variability in the dataset followed by iron/sulfate reduction, and methanogenesis. The effect of seasonal and hydrologic changes on biogeochemistry was evaluated from samples collected in a wet/dry period from three locations exhibiting upward, downward, and negligent hydrologic flow between aquifer and wetland. PCA was used to identify the principal biogeochemical processes and to obtain factor scores for evaluating significant seasonal and hydrological differences via analysis of variance. Iron and sulfate reduction were dominated by changes in water table levels and water flow paths, whereas methanogenesis and bacterial barite utilization were dominated by season and associated with a site with negligible flow. A preliminary study on microbial response to changes in geochemical nutrients (e.g. electron acceptors and electron donors) was conducted using in situ microcosms with the purpose of quantifying iron and sulfate reduction rates. Problems encountered in the experiment such as leaks in the microcosms did not allow the determination of respiration rates, therefore the experiments will be repeated in the future. The results suggest that iron and sulfate reduction were stimulated with the addition of sulfate and ferrihydrite (electron acceptors) and acetate and lactate (electron donors). This research demonstrates the importance of assessing biogeochemical processes at interface zones at appropriate scales and reveals the seasonal and hydrological controls on system processes.

Groundwater is a critical source of fresh drinking water for almost half of the world’s population and it also supplies irrigated agriculture. Groundwater is also important in sustaining streams, lakes, wetlands, and associated ecosystems. But despite this, knowledge about the impact of climate change on groundwater quantity and quality is limited. Direct impacts of climate change on natural processes (groundwater recharge, discharge, storage, saltwater intrusion, biogeochemical reactions, chemical fate and transport) may be exacerbated by human activities (indirect impacts). Increased groundwater abstraction, for example, may be needed in areas with unsustainable or contaminated surface water resources caused by droughts and floods. Climate change effects on groundwater resources are, therefore, closely linked to other global change drivers, including population growth, urbanization and land-use change, coupled with other socio-economic and political trends. Groundwater response to global changes is a complex function that depends on climate change and variability, topography, aquifer characteristics, vegetation dynamics, and human activities. This volume contains case studies from diverse aquifer systems, scientific methods, and climatic settings that have been conducted globally under the framework of the UNESCO-IHP project Groundwater Resources Assessment under the Pressures of Humanity and Climate Change (GRAPHIC). This book presents a current and global synthesis of scientific findings and policy recommendations for scientists, water managers and policy makers towards adaptive management of groundwater sustainability under future climate change and variability.

Book excerpt: "The worldwide depletion of groundwater resources as detected by the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites is a striking warning of the need to manage groundwater resources more sustainably. However, effective and sustainable groundwater management has proven difficult due to the complex topology of aquifers and the dynamic interactions of groundwater with other components of the socio-ecological system (e.g. surface water, human beings). A comprehensive understanding of groundwater dynamics and its main drivers at multiple scales is a prerequisite to developing targeted management strategies to cope with regional groundwater depletion. The overarching goal of my thesis is to develop scientific knowledge about the spatio-temporal changes of groundwater storage and its socio-ecological drivers to help foster new strategies for the sustainable management of groundwater resources. I used the Yellow River Basin (YRB) in northern China as a case study system because the groundwater in this basin is important for local livelihoods, and local groundwater dynamics are experiencing unanticipated spatial and temporal changes due to changes in population, climate, irrigated agriculture, and water use by different sectors. The thesis is manuscript-based and consists of five main research articles in addition to the introduction (Chapter 1) and conclusion (Chapter 7) chapters. As groundwater dynamics vary with scale, I conducted my studies mainly at the basin and provincial scales. At the basin scale, I first employed GRACE satellite data to empirically measure changes in groundwater storage in the YRB over time (2003-2016) (Chapter 2). Then I conducted time stability analysis which integrates the spatial and temporal information of groundwater storage to propose corresponding strategies for regional management (Chapter 3). Further, I applied statistical analyses to a series of socio-ecological variables collected at the basin scale, such as water use, population density, precipitation, temperature, vegetation, and irrigated area, to identify the major factors associated with changes in groundwater storage in the YRB (Chapter 4). At the provincial scale, I used water budget analysis and social investigations to explore other possible factors (e.g. management practices) that may be contributing to groundwater changes in Ningxia province (Chapter 5). Finally, I explored a way forward to improve groundwater governance in Ningxia by revealing the potential for community-based management to fill gaps in the existing water rights transfer system (Chapter 6). Overall, this transdisciplinary research has resulted in a comprehensive analysis of the groundwater status in the YRB and the drivers of groundwater changes over the past 14 years, which help to develop evidence-based suggestions for sustainable groundwater management in the YRB. The systematic research methods used, and management strategies proposed in this study can be applied in other similar arid agricultural watersheds where water management is a priority. This improved knowledge about groundwater management is critical as groundwater plays an increasingly important role in sustaining human livelihoods in the face of environmental uncertainties such as climate change"--

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that the global mean surface temperature has increased 0.6 0.2 oC since 1861, and predicts an increase of 2 to 4 oC over the next 100 years. Temperature increases also affect the hydrologic cycle by directly increasing evaporation of available surface water and vegetation transpiration. Consequently, these changes can influence precipitation amounts, timings and intensity rates, and indirectly impact the flux and storage of water in surface and subsurface reservoirs (i.e., lakes, soil moisture, groundwater). In addition, there may be other associated impacts, such as sea water intrusion, water quality deterioration, potable water shortage, etc. While climate change affects surface water resources directly through changes in the major long-term climate variables such as air temperature, precipitation, and evapotranspiration, the relationship between the changing climate variables and groundwater is more complicated and poorly understood. The greater variability in rainfall could mean more frequent and prolonged periods of high or low groundwater levels, and saline intrusion in coastal aquifers due to sea level rise and resource reduction. Groundwater resources are related to climate change through the direct interaction with surface water resources, such as lakes and rivers, and indirectly through the recharge process. The direct effect of climate change on groundwater resources depends upon the change in the volume and distribution of groundwater recharge. Therefore, quantifying the impact of climate change on groundwater resources requires not only reliable forecasting of changes in the major climatic variables, but also accurate estimation of groundwater recharge.
