Book World War II and Upcountry South Carolina

Download or read book World War II and Upcountry South Carolina written by Courtney L. Tollison PhD and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11-01 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War II changed America, and the history of Upcountry South Carolina during this era testifies to the wars deep impact. On the homefront, Upcountry residents grew victory gardens, supported recruits at local bases and soldiers abroad, and manufactured textile goods, including uniforms and parachutes, crucial for the war effort. As thousands of young men and women came into the Upcountry to train at Spartanburgs Camp Croft and Greenvilles Army Air Base, thousands more were sent to Europe, the Pacific, and beyond. More than 166,000 South Carolinians fought for the United States, including 5 Congressional Medal of Honor winners. The resulting import and export of culture through the war and long after reflects the modernization and diversification that occurred across the South. Using words and images from the men and women who lived through it all, Furman University professor and Upcountry History Museum historian Courtney Tollison examine the ways that Upcountry South Carolina affected World War II and how the war affected the region.

Book When the Soldiers Came to Town

Download or read book When the Soldiers Came to Town written by Susan Turpin and published by Hub City Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War I and World War II, more than 350,000 men on their way to battlefields abroad came to Spartanburg to learn to be soldiers at the training camps of Wadsworth and Croft. The story of how wartime preparation changed them, and how they in turn changed Spartanburg, is the focus of Hub CityÆs When the Soldiers Came to Town, a lively, illustrated history edited by Susan Turpin, Carolyn Creal, Ron Crawley, and James Crocker of the Spartanburg County Historical Association. Few traces remain of the 2,000-acre Wadsworth training facility and the 20,000-acre Croft complex. Many of the soldiers who trained there are gone as well. But this collection of photographs and memories ensures that Spartanburgùand the rest of the worldùwill not forget what went on at those bases in those short years. It also shines a light on the dynamic beginnings of the Spartanburg Memorial Airport, site of numerous ôwar gamesö that trained thousands of American flyboys in the early 1940s.

Book History of Spartanburg County

Download or read book History of Spartanburg County written by J. B. O. Landrum and published by . This book was released on with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. B. O. Landrum's history of Spartanburg County is meticulously researched, being much-consulted by local and national historians since it was first published in 1900. Writing his account in a time that predates history books being of standardized structure and composition, Landrum's chronicle is unique and multifaceted. He focuses alternately on the history of the city of Spartanburg, and then of the surrounding countryside. The most famous buildings and places of business are discussed, with an insightful account of the local development of manufacturing and trade throughout the 19th century given. Importantly for modern-day readers is Landrum's research into the significance of Spartanburg during the U.S. Civil War. Many young men living locally were drafted into the Confederate army, several going on to display heroism and distinction in service. The war affected the area deeply; many families sustained at least one casualty, with the destruction of life and property leaving a lasting mark on the local culture. Roughly two-thirds of this book discusses the distinguished families and individuals who resided in the Spartanburg area. These genealogies and short biographies are accompanied by photographs, that we appreciate the personal and professional history of the area's respected sons and daughters.

Book North Carolina and World War II

Download or read book North Carolina and World War II written by Anita Price Davis and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Carolina did more than its part during World War II. This Southern state trained more troops than any other state in the nation. Can one still find the military posts and shipyards, the cemeteries and memorials, the convalescent units and R&R facilities today? This volume describes in detail both the state's 20-plus military sites and the eight little-known North Carolina prisoner of war camps. Images and memories tell the story of service personnel and their families who contributed to the war effort at much personal sacrifice. The book reminds readers of how those Carolinians who remained behind did their part through supporting the troops, rationing, salvaging metals, growing Victory Gardens and purchasing War Bonds.

Book History of Spartanburg County

Download or read book History of Spartanburg County written by J. B. O. Landrum and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Spartanburg County: Embracing an Account of Many Important Events, and Biographical Sketches of Statesmen, Divines and Other Public Men, and the Names of Many Others Worthy of Record in the History of Their County Three years ago the author published a volume entitled, "Colonial and Revolutionary History of Upper South Carolina," embracing for the most part the primitive and revolutionary history of the territory comprising the original county of Spartanburg, S. C., which narrative, so far as active hostilities were concerned, ends with the year 1781. The present volume, comprising a history of the original county of Spartanburg proper, is intended to be a continuation of the first volume, and begins with the organization of said county in 1785. Of the events as occurring in the same between the years mentioned (1781-5) he has been unable to obtain information from any source. The author, in presenting this volume to the public, has no apologies to make for whatever may appear to be his shortcomings in the humble but pleasant task which he has had before him. Written and compiled one hundred and fifteen years after the organization of his native county, he has labored under many trying difficulties to collect the material matter and data found recorded herein, most of which, in course of time, would have been lost in tradition. If his efforts along this line meet with the approval of a generous public, he will feel more than gratified. Spartanburg county, now one of the most interesting and progressive in the State, has a history behind her worthy of preservation. In the advancement which she has already made in religious and educational institutions, in manufactures and agriculture, she has made a record inferior to none in the State. Book Peddlers Merchants and Manufacturers

Download or read book Peddlers Merchants and Manufacturers written by Diane Catherine Vecchio and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2024-01-04 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new perspective on Jewish history in the South Diane Catherine Vecchio examines the diverse economic experiences of Jews who settled in Upcountry (now called Upstate) South Carolina. Like other parts of the so-called New South, the Upcountry was a center of textile manufacturing and new business opportunities that drew entrepreneurial energy to the region. Working with a rich set of oral histories, memoirs, and traditional historical documents, Vecchio provides an important corrective to the history of manufacturing in South Carolina. She explores Jewish community development and describes how Jewish business leaders also became civic leaders and affected social, political, and cultural life. The Jewish community's impact on all facets of life across the Upcountry is vital to understanding the growth of today's Spartanburg–Greenville corridor.
