Project based learning (PBL) is a teaching method that focuses on supporting children as they initiate, investigate and actively engage in cooperative learning around a shared interest or project by using available resources to seek the answers to the questions that drive their curiosity about the subject (Beneke & Ostrosky, 2009). Recent research suggests that problem based approaches to learning can increase student engagement and promote self-regulation at the early childhood level. In a project-based approach to learning, early childhood teachers act as guides, strategically developing, planning and facilitating the interests of their students (Beneke & Astrosky, 2009). By asking specific questions, offering brief observations, and allowing children to actively explore, early childhood teachers can set the stage for dynamic inquiries and model appropriate ways to cope with emotions that naturally occur during investigations. This proposed action research examines the perceptions of project-based approaches to learning in an early childhood classroom and seeks to prove that by utilizing this methodology when teaching very young children, an increase in student engagement and self-regulation, along with newly acquired knowledge and skills, will be the likely outcome.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to determine the impacts of a project-based learning (PBL) course on the teaching and learning perspectives of early childhood education undergraduate students engaging in an integrative science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) minor program of study. The current study was conducted using the Critical Incident Methodology and online interviews with six current and former students who successfully passed the course and indicated that a class in the minor impacted their perspectives on teaching and learning. The results indicated that students were coming away from the class with a changed perspective on teaching and learning and that this was occurring due to how different PBL is from the traditional early childhood education classes they were engaged with prior to and after the class.
