Book excerpt: A magical world that will captivate fans of Kate DiCamillo and Diana Wynne Jones. Marah Levi is a promising violinist who excels at school and can read more languages than most librarians. Even so, she has little hope of a bright future: she is a sparker, a member of the oppressed lower class in a society run by magicians. Then a mysterious disease hits the city of Ashara, turning its victims’ eyes dark before ultimately killing them. As Marah watches those whom she loves most fall ill, she finds an unlikely friend in Azariah, a wealthy magician boy. Together they pursue a cure in secret, but more people are dying every day, and time is running out. Then Marah and Azariah make a shocking discovery that turns inside-out everything they thought they knew about magic and about Ashara, their home. Set in an imaginative world rich with language, lore, and music, this gripping adventure plunges the reader into the heart of a magical government where sparks of dissent may be even more deadly than the dark eyes.

Book Conway s Game of Life

Download or read book Conway s Game of Life written by Nathaniel Johnston and published by Nathaniel Johnston. This book was released on 2022-03-11 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dead cells with three live neighbors are born, while live cells with fewer than two or more than three live neighbors die. These simple rules define Conway's Game of Life, which exhibits complex and unpredictable behavior that has been studied for over 50 years. This book provides a thorough introduction to the Game of Life, the mathematics behind it, and the methods used to construct many of its most interesting patterns. It emphasizes conceptual techniques for constructing patterns that evolve in unusual ways, and guides the reader through the thought processes and ideas that are needed to combine various building blocks into more interesting composite patterns. While this book largely follows the history of the Game of Life, that is not its primary purpose. Rather, it is a by-product of the fact that most recently discovered patterns build upon patterns and techniques that were developed earlier. The goal of this book is to demystify the Game of Life by breaking down the complex patterns that have been developed in it into bite-size chunks that can be understood individually. Book Kinematic Modeling Identification and Control of Robotic Manipulators

Download or read book Kinematic Modeling Identification and Control of Robotic Manipulators written by Henry W. Stone and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this dissertation is to advance the state-of-the-art in the kinematic modeling, identification, and control of robotic manipulators with rigid links in an effort to improve robot kinematic performance. The positioning accuracy of commercially-available industrial robotic manipulators depends upon a kinematic model which describes the robot geometry in a parametric form. Manufacturing error in the machining and assembly of manipulators lead to discrepancies between the design parameters and the physical structure. Improving the kinematic perfor mance thus requires the identification of the actual kinematic parameters of each individual robot. The identified kinematic parameters are referred to as the arm signature. Existing robot kinematic models, such as the Denavit-Hartenberg model, are not directly applicable to kinematic parameter identification. In this dissertation we introduce a new kinematic model, called the 5-Model, which is applicable to kinematic parameter identification, and use it as the foundation for our development of a general technique for identifying the kinematic parameters of any robot with rigid links.

The authors begin with an overview of how to write for children then move into the specifics of idea generation. Readers will learn creativity techniques, where to find ideas, how to assess each idea's potential and which form will suite the idea best - picture book, chapter book or nonfiction article. Marcia Thronton Jones and Debbie Dadey are the authors of the bestselling Adventures of the Bailey School Kids series, Triplet Trouble series, and the Bailey City Monsters series, all published by Scholastic. Both speak at writer's conferences across the country. Children's writers will recognize the names of these authors and want to find out their formula for success.
