Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Success will destroy elemental magic. Failure condemns this world and the next. Pick up the award-winning series, nominated for Best Book of 2017 and winner of Best Worldbuilding, and enter a story described as “Brilliantly contrived and beautifully executed, it reminds us why we love the genre” and, “This was pure magic and 'Epic Fantasy' at its very best.” Six months after a tragic war, the world of Myrrah has found peace. But many of the heroes have not. When Zhao’s reluctant homecoming sparks a battle over the fate of Elementals among his people, he calls on his friends for help only to find they are busy with new problems of their own. And one has the potential to end all magic. For nearly destroying the world in an ancient war, the Ashanti were cursed by the Goddess Mhyrah with lifespans of less than a decade. To regain normal lives for his people, Beh’kana, the Ashanti King, will defy the traditions handed down since the dawn of time, even if that means rekindling an ancient feud—one that nearly destroyed the world before it fully began. His quest to conquer death and gain control of the source of all elemental magic—the spirit realm—threatens to burn the world to ashes. Lavinia did not seek to be named Guardian of the Spheres when she touched each to gain control of elemental power. But now that choice has propelled her to being the key to stopping the Ashanti. She controls the gates that allow magic into the world, and she must close them to prevent the Ashanti from crossing into the spirit realm and gaining power beyond imagination—enough to enslave or destroy the world they once sought to rule. But with the closure of each gate, an elemental power is lost, and those who stand against the Ashanti are less able to fight a threat that seeks control over life and death. Welcome back to the world of Myrrah, full of elemental magic and epic fantasy adventure! The fate of the world hangs in the balance, and the sacrifice to save it might be elemental magic. Discover this exhilarating tale that has received praise such as “It is the sort of read that reminds us how great fantasy can be.” and, “Strong characters and a beautiful world hold up a fine story. We love Ms. Birt’s work, we only wish we’d found her sooner.” The Games of Fire Trilogy bundle contains all three books of the series: Spark of Defiance, Fantasia Reviews 2017 nominated book of the Year Gates of Fire & Earth, and A New Goddess PLUS the Untold Stories of the World of Myrrah that contains novellas and short stories set in the same world (and often featuring familiar characters!).

Download or read book Defiance written by Tom Behan and published by I.B. Tauris. This book was released on 2008 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation In 1960's Sicily, the Mafia were everywhere -- and never seen. In the town of Cinisi, known as 'Mafiopoli', their power was unspoken, and absolute: 'it's in the air that you breathe' as the locals used to say. One man however, dared to speak out. Like many Sicilians, Peppino Impastato was born into a family with strong Mafia affiliations. When his uncle was brutally murdered in 1963, Peppino decided to dedicate his life to opposing the Mafia. No-one had ever talked about the Mafia in publicbefore, let alone attacked them. Determined to take on the forces of corruption and privilege, Peppino led a people's movement against the Mafia, launching a national radio station on which he savagely pilloried both the organization and its allies in the Catholic Church. Peppino was punished for his defiance -- he was violently murdered. The spark he lit, however, has not died. On the anniversary of his death, Italy held its first ever national anti-Mafia rally, and today a new generation of activists inspired by Peppino campaigns for truth and justice. In this compelling book, based on exclusive interviews with members of the Impastato family and those who knew them, Tom Behan takes us inside the murky world of 'Mafiopoli', and tells for the first time a tale of courage and resistance in the very heartland of Mafia power.

Download or read book The Virtue of Defiance and Psychiatric Engagement written by Nancy Nyquist Potter and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-21 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is defiance, and when does defiant behaviour impede one's ability to aim at flourishing? People who are defiant can present perplexing challenges etiologically, diagnostically, and responsively. But in order to understand accurately when defiant behaviour is good, or bad, or neither (when it emerges out of mental illness), a fresh perspective on defiance is needed. This book offers a nuanced and complex look at defiance, taking seriously issues of dysfunction while also attending to social contexts in which defiant behaviour may arise. Those living in adverse conditions such as oppression, systematic disadvantages, and disability may act defiantly for good reasons. This perspective places defiance squarely within the moral domain; thus, it should not be assumed that when professionals come across defiant behaviour, it is a sign of mental dysfunction. Potter argues that defiance sometimes is a virtue, meaning that a disposition to be ready to be defiant when the situation calls for it is part of living a life with a realistic understanding of the aim of flourishing and its limits in our everyday world. Her work also offers theoretical work on problems in knowing that can impede understanding and responsiveness to those who are, or seem to be, defiant. Clinicians, teachers, social workers, nurses, and others working in helping professions are invited to engage in different ways with defiance so as to better understand and respond to people who express that defiance. Case studies, a framework for differentiating different forms of defiance, a realistic picture of phronesis-practical reasoning-and an explanation of how to give uptake well are some of the topics covered. The voices of service users strengthen the author's claims that defiance that is grounded in phronesis is just as much a part of moral life for those living with mental disabilities as for anyone else.

Book excerpt: When Lockhart Flawse is catapulted out of his upper-class and rapunzel-esque life with the curmudgeonly Flawse Senior, he must enter the world of suburbia, and marriage. Rendered an absolute twit in modern society by his medieval upbringing, Lockhart must resort to drastic tactics in his attempt to return to Flawse House. Faced with the horrors of suburbia, he must either terrorise, blackmail and potentially kill an entire street of his tenants, or attempt to find his unknown and elusive father in order to inherit the estate. However, with the belief that he was dropped into his mother's arms by a stork, killing a street of people may be the wiser option for the socially inept young man. He is also under mounting pressure, as it may all be in vain if his gold-digging mother-in-law has her way. Now the wife of Flawse Senior, she has decided that if Lockhart's wealthy grandfather can't have the decency to die on his own, she will take matters into her own hands.
