Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Nonword repetition tasks were originally devised to assess the efficiency of the phonological loop (Baddeley & Hitch, 1974), a component of the working memory system, where verbal information is temporarily stored and translated to support activities like phonological processing during early word-recognition (Snowling, 1981; Wagner et al., 2003), speech production (McCarthy & Warrington, 1984), and articulation (Watkins, Dronkers, & Vargha-Khadem, 2002; Yoss & Darley, 1974). From a practical perspective, there is a significant need for a systematically-designed Spanish nonword repetition measure that is equivalent to currently-available English measures. For this study, a database of nonwords that considered phonotactic and phonological properties of Spanish was devised. In a preliminary study, Spanish-speaking adults provided wordlikeness judgments about a large set of candidate nonwords. A subset of the rated nonwords was used in the development of a Spanish nonword repetition measure. The aim of the main experiment was to explore the contributions of participant factors (age, gender, and vocabulary knowledge) and item factors (word length, stress pattern, and wordlikeness) to Spanish repetition performance in this group of Spanish speaking, English language learning children. From a theoretical perspective, this investigation allowed a first observation of how experience with listening to and producing Spanish words influences the acquisition of Spanish-specific phonological patterns. A total of 68 children, ages four to six years with varying degrees of Spanish language knowledge participated in this study. Results revealed significant age and word length effects. However, stress pattern did not exert significant effects on repetition performance, which is not completely consistent with previous literature. That is, participants repeated nonwords from both the more frequent and the less frequent stress pattern with similar accuracy. Wordlikeness, a previously uninvestigated variable in nonword repetition was found to affect repetition accuracy. For all participants, nonwords rated as high in wordlikeness were more accurately repeated than were nonwords with low wordlikeness ratings. Findings of the study are discussed in terms of how they relate to working memory and usage-based models of phonological learning. Finally, the clinical relevance of nonword repetition in the assessment of coarse- and fine-grained mappings of phonological knowledge is suggested.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if intelligibility ratings of bilingual (Spanish-English) preschool children by unfamiliar listeners are predicted by age, gender, and/or measures of rate of speech, receptive vocabulary, and phonological deviations. A second purpose was to ascertain whether significant differences exist among predictor variables in both Spanish and English. Participants for this study were 60 bilingual preschool children ranging in age from 4:0 (years: months) to 5:10. Unfamiliar listeners rated connected speech samples for each child in both languages using a 5-point Likert scale. A total occurrence of major phonological deviations score was obtained for each child in both languages. In addition, a number of syllables per 30-second connected speech sample provided the means for rate of speech calculations. One bilingual receptive vocabulary score was obtained for both languages. Based on a multiple regression analysis, two significant predictor variables emerged for each language. In English, phonological deviations and vocabulary predicted intelligibility ratings of preschool children. Phonological deviations also predicted intelligibility ratings of preschool children in Spanish, followed by rate. Results of a 2 X 2 X 2 MANOVA revealed significant main effects related to language and age, but not gender. Follow-up univariate analyses revealed that 5-year-old children across the two languages were found to be significantly more intelligible than 4-year-olds. In addition, children were found to speak significantly faster in Spanish than in English and 5-year-old children also were found to speak significantly faster in Spanish than 4-year-olds.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to use previously recorded Spanish trisyllabic words tested on adults in the measurement of the speech recognition threshold of Spanish-speaking children in order to (a) determine the words’ appropriateness when testing children and (b) compare psychometric functions between adults and children. A selection of 28 frequently used trisyllabic words was chosen from previously recorded samples of male and female adult native speakers of Spanish. These words were then presented to 20 native Spanish-speaking children with normal hearing between the ages of 4 and 8 years. The words were presented starting at -5 dB HL and ascended in 5 dB increments until the presentation level reached 15 dB HL. Using logistic regression, psychometric functions were calculated for each word. Resulting pediatric thresholds were found to be 8.7 dB higher for male talkers and 11.0 dB higher for female talkers than previously reported adult thresholds. These results indicate a clinically significant threshold difference between pediatric and adult populations. Future research should be conducted to measure the speech recognition threshold (SRT) in children of varying ages to determine the age at which the SRT approximates with adult performance.

Book excerpt: How second language learners represent and process cognates throughout development is an interesting area of inquiry to teachers, researchers, and learners alike. Cognates, as opposed to other word translations, are unique to learn in L2 because they share form (i.e. orthography, phonology, or morphology) and meaning, (i.e. semantics) with their L1 counterparts, essentially creating a class of words with special properties in bilingual memory. These special properties have yielded both facilitatory and inhibitory effects on bilingual visual word recognition in experimental conditions (Dijkstra et al. (1999)), as well as a lively debate on the nature of these results, (Sánchez-Casas & García-Albea (2005)). Although these experiments and debates have been productive, no consensus on the nature of the results has been reached, and almost no investigation has been conducted on how these effects develop in an L2 learner or heritage speaker.The purpose of this study is to address issues of lexical access and organization of cognates among both heritage speakers and L2 learners of Spanish in the United States. More specifically, we examined the effects that language (i.e. orthography and phonology) and cognition (e.g. intelligence, working memory, attention, and other cognitive variables) present to these populations in Cognate Recognition of English-Spanish cognates in Spanish. To better understand cognate recognition among these populations, we employed experimental and self-reporting paradigms designed to assess both language and cognitive related variables. Results show that cognates can be subdivided by orthographic and phonological features to form distinct perceptual categories in all groups of participants. Although the relationship is complex, in most cases orthography does facilitate reaction time in relation to phonology. Furthermore, individual differences do change throughout L2 lexical development and a few significant predictors of Cognate Recognition in Spanish are: attention, English vocabulary knowledge, spelling ability in English, number of L2 classes taken, and amount of time since last L2 class was taken.

Book excerpt: In the field of speech-language pathology, there is an increasing need for valid and appropriate assessment measures for Spanish-speaking students that can reliably be given by examiners with a wide range of Spanish knowledge and scoring experience. In order to determine the level of detail needed to reliably score a standardized measure of Spanish narrative ability, 15 participants, ranging in Spanish proficiency and experience levels, scored six samples of the experimental version of the Test of Narrative Language-Spanish (TNL-Spanish). Consistency and accuracy of scores were compared with Spanish proficiency levels, comfort levels, and presentation method (written transcript and audio-recorded samples). Results indicated no significant effect for any factor, indicating that examiners of varying levels of Spanish proficiency and experience level can reliably and efficiently score an assessment in Spanish when provided with clear and specific scoring procedures and information regarding the kinds of errors present in language disorders in Spanish.
