Book Spanish Life in Town and Country Classic Reprint

Download or read book Spanish Life in Town and Country Classic Reprint written by Louis Higgin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Life in Town and Country It has been thought well to include Portugal in this volume, so as to embrace the entire Iberian Peninsula. Though geographically contiguous, and so closely associated in the popular mind, the Spanish and Portuguese nations offer in fact the most striking divergences alike in character and institutions, and separate treatment was essential in justice to each country. The preferential attention given to Spain is only in keeping with the more prominent part she has played, and may yet play, in the history of civilisation. I Am indebted for the chapters on Portugal to Mr. Eugene E.Street, whose long and intimate acquaintance with the land and its people renders him peculiarly fitted to draw their picture. At a recent political meeting in Madrid, for the first time, were seen democrats, republicans, and monarchists united; amidst a goodly quantity of somewhat "tall" talk, two notable remarks were received with acclamation by all parties: one was that Italy had found freedom, and had made herself into a united nationality, under a constitutional monarch; and the other, that between the Government of England and a republic there was no difference except in name-that in all[...]".

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spanish-American Republics The reader will find in the following pages a plain narrative of observa tion and travel in the more accessible parts of the five important republics of Spanish South America, Chili, Peru, the Argentine, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The writer neither encountered nor sought adventures; his object was not to explore unknown territory, but rather to examine the actual state of the town and country populations in the year 1890; to study the commercial and social life of the capitals and ports; to see how people live and labor in the rural dis tricts; to give an account of the various special industries; to describe the real aspect of the countries in question; to note the characteristic features of the inhabitants; and, in short, to make a modern report of the progress of civiliza tion south of the equator. Book Adventures in Search of a Living in Spanish America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Adventures in Search of a Living in Spanish America Classic Reprint written by Vaquero Vaquero and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures in Search of a Living in Spanish-America In these days of many publications the preface is often little more than an excuse for writing the book. Two of the most common objections to books of travel are that they are either the superficial accounts of people who have been only a short time in the country they describe, or else that they are written from the standpoint of some occupation that does not interest the public at large. As my travels in Spanish-America extended over a period of nearly six years, it may be fairly hoped that the knowledge of some of the places here described is not superficial, and professional work often procured adventures which, if ill-paid in money, were rich in incident. So the profession has been merely used as a thread on which to hang the tale. And if the incidents here described do not altogether correspond with those experienced by others, it does not necessarily follow that any of the writers have deviated from the truth. For a wealthy tourist will see most things from a different aspect to that of a needy foreign resident who is competing for a bare living. The photographs have been selected from those taken during my travels, in the hope that they may convey to the reader a more vivid perception of the subject matter; and if my efforts should be appreciated it is proposed to follow up these adventures by a second volume that treats of the West Indies.
