Book Spanish Life in Town and Country Including Portuguese Life in Town and Country

Download or read book Spanish Life in Town and Country Including Portuguese Life in Town and Country written by L. Higgin and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given plenty of water, and Madrid is an ideal place for flowers. Such carnations as those which are grown in the nursery gardens there are never seen elsewhere-they are a revelation in horticulture; nor are the roses any less wonderful. The bouquet with which a Spaniard, whether hidalgo or one of your servants, greets your birthday is generally a pyramid almost as tall as yourself. It needs to be placed in a large earthenware jar on the floor, and if you should be happy enough to have a good many friends, there is scarcely room for anything else in your gabinete. -from "Chapter IV: Spanish Society" At the turn of the 20th century, British and American tourists and travelers were only just beginning to explore the beauty of Spain and acquaint themselves with her people. This ode to a romantic and-in 1902, when this volume was published-increasingly cosmopolitan nation is a wonderful introduction to the nation at the time, exploring the land and its inhabitants, popular amusements, politics and government, commerce and agriculture, religion and education, arts and literature, the etiquette at the royal court, the position of women, the wonders of Madrid, and much more. Also included: chapters on "Portuguese Life in Town and Country" by Eugene E. Street. OF INTEREST TO: students of European culture, armchair travelers

The other folk who make up Japanese society include farmers, artisans and artists, merchants, women, and servants. Readers desiring to understand the country and people of Japan will find this book a distinct help, written in a clear and forceful style.

Book Dutch Life in Town and Country

Download or read book Dutch Life in Town and Country written by P. M. Hough and published by . This book was released on 1902 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strangest of all these begging-customs, however, is the one in vogue between Christmas and Twelfth Night. Then the children go out in couples, each boy carrying an earthenware pot, over which a bladder is stretched, with a piece of stick tied in the middle. When this stick is twirled about, a not very melodious grumbling sound proceeds from the contrivance, which is known by the name of 'Rommelpot.' By going about in this manner the children are able to collect some few pence to buy bread--or gin--for their fathers. When they stop before any one's house, they drawl out, 'Give me a cent, and I will pass on, for I have no money to buy bread.'

Book The Edwardians and the Making of a Modern Spanish Obsession

Download or read book The Edwardians and the Making of a Modern Spanish Obsession written by Kirsty Hooper and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did the Edwardians know about Spain, and what was that knowledge worth? The Edwardians and the Making of a Modern Spanish Obsession draws on a vast store of largely unstudied primary source material to investigate Spain’s place in the turn-of-the-century British popular imagination. Set against a background of unprecedented emotional, economic and industrial investment in Spain, the book traces the extraordinary transformation that took place in British knowledge about the country and its diverse regions, languages and cultures between the tercentenary of the Spanish Armada in 1888 and the outbreak of World War I twenty-six years later. This empirically-grounded cultural and material history reveals how, for almost three decades, Anglo-Spanish connections, their history and culture were more visible, more colourfully represented, and more enthusiastically discussed in Britain’s newspapers, concert halls, council meetings and schoolrooms, than ever before. It shows how the expansion of education, travel, and publishing created unprecedented opportunities for ordinary British people not only to visit the country, but to see the work of Spanish and Spanish-inspired artists and performers in British galleries, theatres and exhibitions. It explores the work of novelists, travel writers, journalists, scholars, artists and performers to argue that the Edwardian knowledge of Spain was more extensive, more complex and more diverse than we have imagined.
