Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spalding's Official Bicycle Guide for 1896: Containing Portraits of All the Leading American Riders, and Valuable Instructions to Cyclists Cycling, in view of its recent developments, cannot be ex-v cluded from a comprehensive list of athletic sports. But at the same time it must at once be admitted that it differs in many points from all other branches of athletics. Thus the runner, the jumper and all other votaries of pedestrian sport find their alpha and omega in public competitions, on the cinder path or the grass plot, and their exercise for the development of their powers, in one direction or another, are engaged in solely with a view to complete their preparation for some forthcoming contest. Although these exercises undoubtedly conduce to a healthy habit of body, sound mind and strong, muscular limbs, yet, beyond this very great gain, athletics as such fulfil no pur pose of value to the community at large, and, least of all, an economic one. The cycling sport, on the other hand, has an economic side, which in real value, in its relation to every-day life, far exceeds the merely competitive developments of the pursuit; and were cycle racing, in all its branches, utterly abolished to-morrow, the interest in, and more particularly the practical value of the sport, would still continue unabated, owing to the fact that it possesses certain solid advantages, which really constitute the life and soul of its particularly vigorous and healthy existence. The economic side of the sport so much insisted on may be found in the practical use of the Wheel in daily life; its hygienic value as a means primarily of healthy exercise is recognized and proved by the personal and practical experience of millions of people throughout the world, to whom a little exercise, combined as it is with a little pleasurable and stimulating excitement, is of the very greatest value from a medical point of'view. Last, but not least, must be considered its great convenience to the stern business of life, whether as a means of economy in time or money. Book Major Taylor

Download or read book Major Taylor written by Andrew Ritchie and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1996-02 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World champion at 19 . . . One of the first black athletes to become world champion in any sport . . . 1-mile record holder . . . American sprint champion in 1898, 1899, 1900 . . . triumphant tours of Europe and Australia . . . Victories against all European champions . . . Until now a forgotten, shadowy figure, Marshall Walter "Major" Taylor is here revealed as one of the early sports world's most stylish, entertaining, and gentlemanly personalities. Born in 1878 in Indianapolis, the son of poor rural parents, Taylor worked in a bike shop until prominent bicycle racer "Birdie" Munger coached him for his first professional racing successes in 1896. Despite continuous bureaucratic—and, at times, physical—opposition, he won his first national championship two years later and became world champion in 1899 in Montreal. This beautifully illustrated, vividly narrated, and scrupulously researched biography recreates the life of a great international athlete at the turn of the century. Based on ten years of research—including extensive interviews with Major Taylor's 91-year old daughter—this is the dramatic story of a young black man who, against prodigious odds, rose to fame and stardom in the tempestuous world of international professional bicycle racing a century ago.

They viewed sport, sometimes self-interestedly but not always self-interestedly, as a medium of personal, collective and national virtue. It is the first general consideration of a selection of these innovatory pioneers and proselytisers who placed Europe at the forefront of major developments in contemporary world sport - now a phenomenon of global significance.

Book Bicycling for Ladies

Download or read book Bicycling for Ladies written by Maria E. Ward and published by Apollo Publishers. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bicycling for Ladies is the trailblazing book that introduced women to bicycling and shocked a Victorian culture on its release in 1896. Today it remains comprehensive and useful, but also celebrates women’s advancement in the sport and offers an inspiring, and amusing, look back. Maria E. Ward let the social norms and gendered expectations of the nineteenth century eat her dust when she wrote the groundbreaking guide to bicycling for women. In chapters such as Women and Tools, Dress, and How to Make Progress, Ward explains the function of wheels, gears, and spokes, gives instruction on how to safely and efficiently ride, and discusses optimal attire (layers and a stretchy corset, of course). Ward’s detailed mechanical and physical instruction, paired with helpful images and charts, makes daunting ordeals like hill climbing, navigating traffic, and bike maintenance a breeze. In modern times, when so much is outsourced, automated, and unreliable, Ward’s approach to transportation is refreshing. But while bicycling is rich with health and environmental benefits, male bicyclists still outnumber female riders, most competitive cyclists are male, and women are more likely to report feeling unsafe on a bike. Ward’s text gives women the tools they need to claim their stake of the road. For seasoned cyclists or those just starting out, it is a timeless and relevant directive—ideal for today’s woman who’s ready to take the world by the handlebars. The photos and instructional images throughout Bicycling for Ladies are the result of a collaboration between Ward and Alice Austen, one of America’s earliest and most prolific professional female photographers. The volume has an elegant new design and is small enough to ride with.
