Book excerpt: This book approaches the problematic question of reading the architectural desensualization of space-as a result of current architectural movements and cultural trends (modernism, postmodernism, post-postmodernism)-through an interpretation of architecture as a rather dynamic entity enhancing sympathy with the self/subject. Therefore, architecture is analyzed as objectively (relating simultaneously to objects and objectivity) acting in space and time upon the subject and thus favoring them with sympathy. In a discipline boasting a multitude of discourses that could be employed in support of this argument (such as neuroscience and Husserlian phenomenology), this book favors the Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO), a theoretical framework that is able to propose a method where time and space can be emitted from architecture as object-oriented. In other words, architectural time and space are examined as possessing the agency to shape the subject, and consequently their perception, cognition and sympathy. Through a case study of war ruins from the Lebanese civil war and neighboring countries, this book makes an important contribution to our understanding of the interplay between space and time through object-oriented wartime architecture, on the one hand, and the self/subject on the other hand. The study aims to provide architects with a potential discourse through which design can be reconsidered. This discourse is formulated around an evaluation of three dimensions-architectural time, architectural space and architectural matter-in addition to a review of architectural strategies and the relationship between subject and object. In so doing, space is presented as that which acts upon the subject, space that is no longer desensualized, space that instead becomes a verb.

Built by parishioners from scavenged or pinched materials, the churches were at once an expression of faith and a form of anti-government protest. Their fantastic designs broke with the state's rigid urbanism. Neither legal nor prohibited, the construction of churches during this period engaged the most talented architects and craftspeople, who in turn enabled parish communities to build their own houses of worship. These community projects eventually became crucial sites for the democratization of Poland. Unearthing the history of these churches through photography and interviews with their designers, this publication sheds new light on the architectural dimension of Poland's transformation from state socialism to capitalism.

Cities experiencing trauma dominate the daily news. Images of blasted buildings or events such as Hurricane Katrina exemplify the sense of 'immediate impact'. But how is this trauma to be understood in its aftermath, and in urban terms? What is the response of the discipline to the post-traumatic condition? On the one hand, one can try to restore and recover everything that has passed, or otherwise see the post-traumatic city as a resilient space poised on the cusp of new potentialities. While repair and reconstruction are automatic reflexes, the knowledge and practices of the disciplines need to be imbued with a deeper understanding of the effect of trauma on cities and their contingent realities. This issue will pursue this latter approach, using examples of post-traumatic urban conditions to rethink the agency of architecture and urbanism in the contemporary world. Post-traumatic urbanism demands of architects the mobilisation of skills, criticality and creativity in contexts in which they are not familiar. The post-traumatic is no longer the exception; it is the global condition.
