Book Leibniz s Metaphysics of Time and Space

Download or read book Leibniz s Metaphysics of Time and Space written by Michael Futch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-04-05 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leibniz’s metaphysics of space and time stands at the centre of his philosophy and is one of the high-water marks in the history of the philosophy of science. In this work, Futch provides the first systematic and comprehensive examination of Leibniz’s thought on this subject. In addition to elucidating the nature of Leibniz’s relationalism, the book fills a lacuna in existing scholarship by examining his views on the topological structure of space and time, including the unity and unboundedness of space and time. It is shown that, like many of his more recent counterparts, Leibniz adopts a causal theory of time where temporal facts are grounded on causal facts, and that his approach to time represents a precursor to non-tensed theories of time. Futch then goes on to situate Leibniz’s philosophy of space and time within the broader context of his idealistic metaphysics and natural theology. Emphasizing the historical background of Leibniz’s thought, the book also places him in dialogue with contemporary philosophy of science, underscoring the enduring philosophical interest of Leibniz’s metaphysics of time and space.

Book excerpt: "[A] provocative page-turner." —People “In Parkhurst’s deft treatment, Harmony becomes a story of our time. . . Parkhurst cements herself as a writer capable of astonishing humanity and exquisite prose.” —Washington Post “Gorgeously written and patently original.” —Jodi Picoult, New York Times bestselling author of Leaving Time From the New York Times bestselling author of The Dogs of Babel, a taut, emotionally wrenching story of how a seemingly "normal" family could become desperate enough to leave everything behind and move to a "family camp" in New Hampshire--a life-changing experience that alters them forever. How far will a mother go to save her family? The Hammond family is living in DC, where everything seems to be going just fine, until it becomes clear that the oldest daughter, Tilly, is developing abnormally--a mix of off-the-charts genius and social incompetence. Once Tilly--whose condition is deemed undiagnosable--is kicked out of the last school in the area, her mother Alexandra is out of ideas. The family turns to Camp Harmony and the wisdom of child behavior guru Scott Bean for a solution. But what they discover in the woods of New Hampshire will push them to the very limit. Told from the alternating perspectives of both Alexandra and her younger daughter Iris (the book's Nick Carraway), this is a unputdownable story about the strength of love, the bonds of family, and how you survive the unthinkable.

Book Physical Relativity

Download or read book Physical Relativity written by Harvey R. Brown and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-11-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical Relativity explores the nature of the distinction at the heart of Einstein's 1905 formulation of his special theory of relativity: that between kinematics and dynamics. Einstein himself became increasingly uncomfortable with this distinction, and with the limitations of what he called the 'principle theory' approach inspired by the logic of thermodynamics. A handful of physicists and philosophers have over the last century likewise expressed doubts about Einstein'streatment of the relativistic behaviour of rigid bodies and clocks in motion in the kinematical part of his great paper, and suggested that the dynamical understanding of length contraction and time dilation intimated by the immediate precursors of Einstein is more fundamental. Harvey Brown both examines andextends these arguments (which support a more 'constructive' approach to relativistic effects in Einstein's terminology), after giving a careful analysis of key features of the pre-history of relativity theory. He argues furthermore that the geometrization of the theory by Minkowski in 1908 brought illumination, but not a causal explanation of relativistic effects. Finally, Brown tries to show that the dynamical interpretation of special relativity defended in the book is consistent with therole this theory must play as a limiting case of Einstein's 1915 theory of gravity: the general theory of relativity.Appearing in the centennial year of Einstein's celebrated paper on special relativity, Physical Relativity is an unusual, critical examination of the way Einstein formulated his theory. It also examines in detail certain specific historical and conceptual issues that have long given rise to debate in both special and general relativity theory, such as the conventionality of simultaneity, the principle of general covariance, and the consistency or otherwise of the special theory withquantum mechanics. Harvey Brown' s new interpretation of relativity theory will interest anyone working on these central topics in modern physics.

An attempt to balance the revelation of scripture given to me by the Holy Ghost both intellectually and spiritually, with philosophy of the forefathers of the faith, paganism, and atheism, and the shadows of truth found therein. I maintain the superiority and absolute nature of Christ over all things, consisting of all things, outlining the basic principles of Christianity to what may be truth, to what is absolute truth, to what isn't truth at all, I also maintain the importance of the physical faith, as Christ (God) was manifest in the flesh, that all men might be saved.

Book The Law of Universal Equilibrium the Unit of Space Time the Unit of Mass of a Substance and the Unit of Weight of a Substance

Download or read book The Law of Universal Equilibrium the Unit of Space Time the Unit of Mass of a Substance and the Unit of Weight of a Substance written by Rita Vaynshteyn and published by Rita Vaynshteyn. This book was released on 2012-01-26 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything pulls everything, apples pull planets, and planets pull apples. From this, Newton was able to relate the force of attraction between two objects to their masses and the distance between them. The picture of the world is more complicated. Einstein's general relativity predicts that accelerated masses should emit gravitational waves and they travel with the speed of light. Space - time is created by rotation of accelerated masses of stars. Accelerations are indistinguishable from gravitational fields. They are equivalent (The Principle of Equivalence). "Masses deform space, with the result that other masses follow curved tracks - as when the sun forces the planets to orbit around it" (Einstein, A., Relativity). The acceleration of Earth's space in the Earth's radius squared area forces any bodies to fall to the earth. The Earth's attraction force is determined by acceleration g. To solve a problem of movement we have to separate the notion of mass from the notion of weight and define when the mass acquires the weight.

Book Understanding Space Time

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert DiSalle
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2006-04-27
  • ISBN : 9781139452663
  • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book Understanding Space Time written by Robert DiSalle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-27 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting the history of space-time physics, from Newton to Einstein, as a philosophical development DiSalle reflects our increasing understanding of the connections between ideas of space and time and our physical knowledge. He suggests that philosophy's greatest impact on physics has come about, less by the influence of philosophical hypotheses, than by the philosophical analysis of concepts of space, time and motion, and the roles they play in our assumptions about physical objects and physical measurements. This way of thinking leads to interpretations of the work of Newton and Einstein and the connections between them. It also offers ways of looking at old questions about a priori knowledge, the physical interpretation of mathematics, and the nature of conceptual change. Understanding Space-Time will interest readers in philosophy, history and philosophy of science, and physics, as well as readers interested in the relations between physics and philosophy.
