Book Emerging Technologies for Disaster Resilience

Download or read book Emerging Technologies for Disaster Resilience written by Mihoko Sakurai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-06 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technological advances have helped to enhance disaster resilience through better risk reduction, response, mitigation, rehabilitation and reconstruction. In former times, it was local and traditional knowledge that was mainly relied upon for disaster risk reduction. Much of this local knowledge is still valid in today’s world, even though possibly in different forms and contexts, and local knowledge remains a shared part of life within the communities. In contrast, with the advent of science and technology, scientists and engineers have become owners of advanced technologies, which have contributed significantly to reducing disaster risks across the globe. This book analyses emerging technologies and their effects in enhancing disaster resilience. It also evaluates the gaps, challenges, capacities required and the way forward for future disaster management. A wide variety of technologies are addressed, focusing specifically on new technologies such as cyber physical systems, geotechnology, drone, and virtual reality (VR)/ augmented reality (AR). Other sets of emerging advanced technologies including an early warning system and a decision support system are also reported on. Moreover, the book provides a variety of discussions regarding information management, communication, and community resilience at the time of a disaster. This book’s coverage of different aspects of new technologies makes it a valuable resource for students, researchers, academics, policymakers, and development practitioners.

Book Remote Sensing for Hazard Monitoring and Disaster Assessment

Download or read book Remote Sensing for Hazard Monitoring and Disaster Assessment written by Eric C Barrett and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-11-28 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concern for environment hazards, plus the real or potential disasters they may prompt, is growing fast as populations and living standards rise. Fortunately, at the same time both the science and technology of space-based mapping and monitoring of our terrestrial environment are maturing fast. This book explores the principles and practices of environmental remote sensing, especially the techniques available for data processing, interpretation and analysis. The applicability of remotely sensed data to marine and coastal hazard monitoring and disaster assessment is described and discussed with special reference to problems endemic to he Mediterranean region, including earthquakes, vulcanicity, soil erosion and degradation, vegetation and crop damage, severe weather phenomena, marine conditions, and air and water pollution. This book will be of particular interest to graduate students, scientists and technical officers involved in environmental protection and management, and to national international relief agencies, both in the Mediterranean region itself and elsewhere.

Book Role of Space Technologies in Disaster Risk Management

Download or read book Role of Space Technologies in Disaster Risk Management written by Amna Rauf and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A growing population and increasing environmental challenges have posed a massive threat to the Earth and its resources. With the world facing a plethora of new global challenges, conventional methods and technology is seemingly outdated for the task. This urges one to look for a new approach; one that not only has a hands-on approach but provides preventative measures to manage such risks. Consequently, in order to achieve such earthly objectives, space technology can provide critical knowledge and contribute to profitable innovations that will assist in an extensive understanding of the current and possible global challenges. This paper will give a holistic understanding of the applications of space technology in the contemporary world; by providing a cost-benefit analysis of its implications. Furthermore, it aims to assess the functional aspects of space technology; while simultaneously weighing the effectiveness, success and productivity of space-based tech and operations. Most importantly, it aims to extract lessons from the international community in operating space technology for disaster risk management. It examines case studies for countries like the United States, China and India who have progressed in this domain. In comparison, it explores the contemporary usage and position that Pakistan acquires in the discipline of space technology. It intends to examine the role of SUPARCO, SAARC, NDMA and PDMA with regards to risk management in Pakistan. The key objective of this paper is to propose practical solutions to Pakistan for the implementation of space technology, which can help reduce the risks of disasters. Keeping in view Pakistan's current budget deficits, this paper determines whether the state should take a collaborative action with the coalition of other countries or an indigenous approach for its space program initiation.
