These words raise questions of the fluidity of identity and space, and how the external and social implications could influence what is perceived as identity. Is identity constant? Can someone be confident in their assumption of what identity is? Or, is it an entity that shifts as experiences happen to the individual? How does the inhabitation of space influence a person's identity? Is identity the same from moment to moment? How does identity manifests in the physical space? As identity is performed, it is important to understand how it interacts with the social structure and space, resulting in a series of systematic experiences that exist in the spatiotemporal ephemerality of the moment. To fully grasp the basics of contemporary Western identity, the book Identity Theory by Peter J. Burke and Jan E. Stets (2009) provides a comprehensive analysis of the traditional theoretical thrust of identity theory. Specifically, they employ the language and working definition of the agent, social structure, and Identity System. Steph Lawler's Book Identity: Sociological Perspectives uses the narrative to position the argument of the development of identity. These texts will situate identity theory and the factors that contribute to the fabrication of identity through interaction with stored memory, performance, experiences, narrative, roles, and the environment. The thread of the narrative converges with the discussion of poetics and how imitation of the social structure informs identity and the translation of the self as social entities. Identity theory is explored through critical theory and artistic medium which leads the consideration of the identity and the body within "space." The domestic space becomes the foci of the spatial relationship to identity. The book At Home: An Anthropology of the Domestic Space (1999) uses the historical lineage and context of the Western domestic space both architecturally and experientially to separate the language of the domestic from assumptions of the space and introduce the word atmosphere. Yi- Fu Tuan's book Space and Place (2014) discuss the individual's autonomy and implication of their experience within the intimate space. The intimate space can be something that is both physically situated or conceptually contrived. As the experience of space exists without physicality, the identity can start to inhabit this space using them as reparative spaces. The identity becomes aware of itself and dissidence becomes a question posed by Erich Fromm about how to situate the self within the social structure and what the consequences of complacency might earn the identity. These theories result in the manifestation of a sculptural piece that explores the thesis that the identity can exist sans the body by erecting spaces of rest and recovery that exist in the decontextualized spatialtemporal. N. Katherine Hayles uses the posthuman body as an entry point for the de-spatialized human existence. The biologically inhibited physical body becomes obsolete as a new representation of the body, the posthuman, can synthesize information in the space of ephemerality and autonomy.

Moreover, this book delves into how both Power and Space collude to uphold the out-of-date sexist, racist, and classist societal norms that Eurocentrism and history continue to cleave to as the defining qualities of the nation and its citizens. With the proliferation of Latin literature within the United States, an ideological readjustment is taking place whereby several late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century authors contest the State’s role in defining its citizens by exposing the unjust role that Space and Power play. With this in mind,the author examines several literary versions of identity to explore how certain authors reject and subvert the social mores against which present-day citizens are measured—especially within government or State institutions but also within families and neighborhoods. The literary works that are analyzed cover a period of twenty-five years ending in 2010. Several of these texts rewrite the national allegory from the point of view of the marginalized while others demonstrate how an individual successfully renegotiates her identity—gender, social class, or ethnicity—from being a disadvantage to being an identity marker to celebrate. The authors defy the place that women are still relegated to, by representing several characters who consciously decide that it is time to battle the forces that would keep them powerless in the public arena. Above all, these texts are anti-Power; the protagonists refuse to accept the societal forces which constantly barrage them, defining them as worthless. These authors and their characters challenge everything that historically has kept women relegated to a space of weakness.

The authors contend that the discursive choices across the political spectrum in the legislative debates reflected strong sectarian characteristics which contained in it the seeds of political unrest of 2011, the so-called ‘Arab Spring’ of Bahrain. Parliamentary rhetoric and its resonance in the public sphere, the authors argue, revealed the underlying contradictions in Bahraini society. The book highlights the significance of legislative discourse as a platform of social cohesion, and its instability being symptomatic of contradictions within society.
