Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few scholars have explored the collective experiences of women living in the inner city and the innovative strategies they develop to navigate daily life in this setting. The Grind illustrates the lived experiences of poor African American women and the creative strategies they develop to manage these events and survive in a community commonly exposed to violence. Alexis S. McCurn draws on nearly two years of naturalistic field research among adolescents and adults in Oakland, California to provide an ethnographic account of how black women accomplish the routine tasks necessary for basic survival in poor inner-city neighborhoods and how the intersections of race, gender, and class shape how black women interact with others in public. This book makes the case that the daily consequences of racialized poverty in the lives of African Americans cannot be fully understood without accounting for the personal and collective experiences of poor black women.

Book Grindhouse Nostalgia

Download or read book Grindhouse Nostalgia written by David Church and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too often dismissed as nothing more than 'trash cinema', exploitation films have become both earnestly appreciated cult objects and home video items that are more accessible than ever. In this wide-ranging new study, David Church explores how the history of drive-in theatres and urban grind houses has descended to the home video formats that keep these lurid movies fondly alive today. Arguing for the importance of cultural memory in contemporary fan practices, Church focuses on both the re-release of archival exploitation films on DVD and the recent cycle of 'retrosploitation' films like Grindhouse, Machete, Viva, The Devil's Rejects, and Black Dynamite. At a time when older ideas of subcultural belonging have become increasingly subject to nostalgia, Grindhouse Nostalgia presents an indispensable study of exploitation cinema's continuing allure, and is a bold contribution to our understanding of fandom, taste politics, film distribution, and home video.

Book Endurance

Download or read book Endurance written by Scott Kelly and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BEST SELLER A stunning, personal memoir from the astronaut and modern-day hero who spent a record-breaking year aboard the International Space Station—a message of hope for the future that will inspire for generations to come. The veteran of four spaceflights and the American record holder for consecutive days spent in space, Scott Kelly has experienced things very few have. Now, he takes us inside a sphere utterly hostile to human life. He describes navigating the extreme challenge of long-term spaceflight, both life-threatening and mundane: the devastating effects on the body; the isolation from everyone he loves and the comforts of Earth; the catastrophic risks of colliding with space junk; and the still more haunting threat of being unable to help should tragedy strike at home--an agonizing situation Kelly faced when, on a previous mission, his twin brother's wife, American Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, was shot while he still had two months in space. Kelly's humanity, compassion, humor, and determination resonate throughout, as he recalls his rough-and-tumble New Jersey childhood and the youthful inspiration that sparked his astounding career, and as he makes clear his belief that Mars will be the next, ultimately challenging, step in spaceflight. In Endurance, we see the triumph of the human imagination, the strength of the human will, and the infinite wonder of the galaxy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Your Worth Is Not Measured by Your Production Grind culture refers to the false belief that to be considered valuable or worthy in our society, one must be productive. Lurking in the shadow of capitalism, grind culture is accepted as normal, even necessary, and most people aren’t even aware of the harmful ways it impacts us. Now, in The Grind Culture Detox, author Heather Archer exposes grind culture in all its complexity. Beginning with the history of grind culture in the United States, Archer explains how the poisonous legacies of stolen labor (chattel slavery) and stolen land (manifest destiny) have led to the exhausting workforce culture we have today. While facing that history is an important first step, Archer goes further by offering a blueprint for how we can radically reorient our lives and fundamentally change our relationship with work and production forever. Utilizing nontraditional approaches such as somatics, sound healing, herbalism, and more, The Grind Culture Detox is an invitation to experience an inner revolution—one where you recognize yourself as a sacred being and acknowledge you are worth far more than what you produce.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Back to the daily grind," they say. But don't say that to Neuro, Dimwit, and Onion. They may get mad at you, considering that their daily grind consists of forced labor and working with unpredictable aliens of all kinds. Not to mention the Zeyrians, an advanced alien species that have taken over so many planets by force, including Earth. Neuro, Dimwit, and Onion are our three main heroes, which RSL would say is a generous way of putting it. In this book, they will have to adjust to their new home life on Planet Zeyrion. In one story, the three inept humans have to deal with COVID-19 on a planet full of immune aliens that don't care. In another story, the Robot Sexy Lady (RSL) must save the 3 men from a maniac. Trax gets scammed TWICE. It's crazy, mannnnn! Age Rating: T - Teen (Appropriate for readers age 12 and older. May contain mild violence, language and/or suggestive themes.) A Version with no swearing is available, too. ----- Space Grind is a story about three humans who are captured and become the slaves of an unpredictable alien named Trax. They are given the ridiculous names: Neuro, Dimwit, and Onion. They are forced to work for an alien race called the Zeyrians, and are trapped on their planet (Zeyrion). They also live with a robot woman named RSL (who helps them adjust to their news lives on Zeyrion), and a radioactive mutant baby alien named Radmu. Space Grind: House Havoc is the first book in the Space Grind book series. House Havoc focuses on five stories that take place in Trax's home. The main characters live in a retro-inspired alien saucer that is very substandard and falling apart. Neuro, Dimwit, and Onion must learn how to live with one another in Trax's home. The three of them each have a hard time adjusting, but do what they can to appease Trax until they can figure out how to escape.

Book True Story

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ty Montague
  • Publisher : Harvard Business Press
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN : 1422170683
  • Pages : 234 pages

Download or read book True Story written by Ty Montague and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is your company a storyteller--or a storydoer? The old way to market a business was storytelling. But in today's world, simply communicating your brand's story in the hope that customers will listen is no longer enough. Instead, your authentic brand must be evident in every action the organization undertakes. Today's most successful businesses are storydoers. These companies create products and services that, from the very beginning, are manifestations of an authentic and meaningful story--one told primarily through action, not advertising. In True Story, creative executive Ty Montague argues that any business, regardless of size or industry, can embrace the principles of storydoing. Indeed, our best-run companies--from small start-ups to global conglomerates--organize around a coherent narrative that is then broadcast through every action they take (from product design to customer service to marketing). Montague shows why storydoing firms are nimble, more adaptive to change, and more efficiently run businesses. Montague is a founder of the growth consultancy co: collective and the former president and CCO of J. Walter Thompson, the largest advertising agency in North America. He brings his depth of creative business experience to the book and provides a clear framework and proven process for bringing you and your customers together in the creation of your brand story. Montague introduces five critical elements--what he calls the "the four truths and the action map"--that are the foundation of storydoing: - the participants (your customers, partners, and employees) - the protagonist (your company today) - the stage (the world around your business) - the quest (your driving ambition and contribution to the world) - your action map (the actions that will make your story real for participants) The book is filled with examples of how forward-thinking organizations--including Red Bull, Shaklee, Grind, TOMS Shoes, and News Corporation--are effectively using storydoing to transform their organizations and drive extraordinary results.
