Book excerpt: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is typically thought of in national terms - as an American initiative developed specifically to compete with the Soviet Union. Yet, from its inception, NASA was mandated not only to sustain US leadership in space, but also to pursue international collaboration. Since that time, it has participated in over four thousand international projects. Drawing on unprecedented access to agency archives and personnel, this definitive study explores US-Soviet cooperation during the darkest days of the Cold War, relations with Western Europe, India, and Japan, the development of the International Space Station, and many other aspects of scientific and technological collaboration, making it a signal contribution to space studies and international diplomatic history.

Book The International Politics of Space

Download or read book The International Politics of Space written by Michael Sheehan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-10-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2007 saw the fiftieth anniversary of the Space Age, which began with the launching of Sputnik by the Soviet Union in October 1957. Space is crucial to the politics of the postmodern world. It has seen competition and cooperation in the past fifty years, and is in danger of becoming a battlefield in the next fifty. The International Politics of Space is the first book to bring these crucial themes together and provide a clear and vital picture of how politically important space has become, and what its exploitation might mean for all our futures. Michael Sheehan analyzes the space programmes of the United States, Russia, China, India and the European Space Agency, and explains how central space has become to issues of war and peace, international law, justice and international development, and cooperation between the worlds leading states. It highlights the significance of China and India’s commitment to space, and explains how the theories and concepts we use to describe and explain space are fundamental to the possibility of avoiding conflict in space in the future.

This book was released on 1998-07-26 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S.-European Collaboration in Space Science reviews the past 30 years of space-based research across the Atlantic. The focus of the book is a set of 13 U.S.-European missions in astrophysics, space physics, planetary sciences, earth sciences, and life and microgravity research that illustrate "lessons learned" on the evolution of the cooperation, mission planning and scheduling, international agreements, cost-sharing, management, and scientific output. These lessons form the basis of the joint committee's findings and recommendations, which serve to improve the future conduct and enhance the scientific output of U.S.-European cooperation and collaboration in space science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The realization that available funding for large-scale space programs is rapidly moving beyond the financial reach of any single nation has fostered arguments that innovative international collaboration is becoming a necessity. It may even be that cooperative arrangements have become the only way to initiate & sustain the more ambitious space projects of the future. In addition, enhanced international cooperation may well be the preferred & most effective approach to carrying out some projects already on the space agenda. Starting from an analysis of the difficulties & benefits of space cooperation, this report recommends the changes in international space relations needed to enable the major spacefaring nations, which carry out the bulk of humanity's activities in space, to band together so as to afford the future large scale space programs that are needed to expand their knowledge, to explore new frontiers, & to guarantee their common security. Book Space as a Strategic Asset

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joan Johnson-Freese
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2007
  • ISBN : 9780231136549
  • Pages : 330 pages

Download or read book Space as a Strategic Asset written by Joan Johnson-Freese and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joan Johnson-Freese argues that the race for space weapons and the U.S. quest for exclusive or at least dominant ownership of strategic space assets have alienated the very allies that the United States needs in order to maintain its leading role in space exploration. Taking a balanced look at the issues that have contributed to the decline of America's manned space program, such as lack of political support and funding, Johnson-Freese offers not only a critique but also a plan for enhancing U.S. space security through cooperation rather than competition. She begins with a brief overview of the history of international space development through four eras: before Sputnik, the space race, after Apollo, and globalization. Then she focuses on how policy changes of the mid-1990s have changed the nation, examining why the United States has grown obsessed with the development of space technology not just as a tool for globalization but as a route toward expanding an already dominant arsenal of weapons. Johnson-Freese claims that these policy choices have greatly affected the attitudes and actions of other countries, and in the fight to achieve security, the United States has instead put itself at greater peril. Johnson-Freese explains complex technical issues in clear, accessible terms and suggests a way forward that is comprehensive rather than partisan. America is not the only country with space ambitions, but it is unique in viewing space as a battlefield and the technological advancements of other nations as a dire threat. Urgent and persuasive, Space as a Strategic Asset underscores the danger of allowing our space program to languish and the crucial role of cooperation in protecting the security of our country and the world.

Book Transatlantic Space Politics

Download or read book Transatlantic Space Politics written by Sheng-Chih Wang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-29 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines transatlantic politics through an analysis of 60 years of US-European strategic interaction in space. The significance of space politics for the study of transatlantic relations receives surprisingly little scholarly attention. As a theatre of interaction, transatlantic space politics reflects the vicissitudes of European and US power in the international system. An understanding of space politics is therefore vital in understanding the status and prospect of the transatlantic order. Using established IR theories, the author investigates transatlantic space politics and proposes a theoretical explanation, which is distinct from the conventional wisdom of the transatlantic security community. More specifically, he distinguishes between the constitutive and regulatory effects of the transatlantic security community, an approach rarely employed in other research in the field. Overall, this book suggests not only that the transatlantic institutional pillar requires repair, but also that the ideational factors need to be revitalised in order to consolidate the transatlantic alliance. This book will be of much interest to students of space power, transatlantic politics, strategic studies, foreign policy and IR/security studies in general.
