The known limits of the lode cover a space of feet, in a nearly due north and south direction (magnetic). At the time the existing mine maps were laid out, the variation of the needle in. That locality was 161} degrees east. The northern half of the lode has a direction a little more to the east than the magnetic meridian, and the southern half a strike which again is slightly more to the east than its neighbor. Great irregularities in the course occur locally, the strike varying in fact from north-east to north-west within short distances. It was the first major discovery of silver ore in the United States. After the discovery was made public in 1859, it sparked a silver rush of prospectors to the area, scrambling to stake their claims. The discovery caused considerable excitement in California and throughout the United States, the greatest since the California Gold Rush in 1849. Mining camps soon thrived in the vicinity, which became bustling centers of fabulous wealth, including Virginia City and Gold Hill. The Comstock Lode is notable not just for the immense fortunes it generated and the large role those fortunes had in the growth of Nevada and San Francisco, but also for the advances in mining technology that it spurred. This book published in 1877 has been reformatted for republication and reprinting and may contain an occasional defect from the original publication or from the reformatting.

De Quille's reporting of Comstock activities and humorous stories were often repeated in other newspapers throughout the old west, and some of his fabricated hoax tales obtained international fame. Being the most prominent newspaper reporter at the time in Virginia City, De Quille had his finger on the pulse of the region, and had direct access to the mines and people, making him eminently qualified as the authoritative author for a history book about the Comstock silver mining boom.
