Book Soviet Theater Nuclear Forces

Download or read book Soviet Theater Nuclear Forces written by Robert Kennedy and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memorandum examines the nature of the Soviet theater nuclear force improvements, the role nuclear weapons play in Soviet doctrine, and the implications of the Soviet theater nuclear buildup for deterrence and defense in Europe. The author concludes that the changing balance of theater nuclear capabilities has resulted in a devaluation of the Western nuclear deterrent, a decline in Western self-confidence, and increase in the vulnerability of the West's nuclear forces and critical command, control, and supply nodes. In response, the author contends that the West must shift the emphasis of its nuclear capabilities from short-range, battlefield systems to long-range Eurostrategic systems, modernize its short-range systems through the introduction of reduced blast/enhanced radiation weapons, and optimize its training, doctrine, force structures, and force dispositions for operations in a nuclear as well as conventional and chemical environments.

Book Soviet Theater Nuclear Capabilities

Download or read book Soviet Theater Nuclear Capabilities written by Robert F. Kennedy and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memorandum examined the changing strategic and theater nuclear environment; Soviet theater nuclear force improvements and doctrine; the implications of Soviet theater nuclear buildup for deterrence and the defense of Europe; and NATO's response. The author concludes that the changing balance of theater capabilities has resulted in a devaluation of deterrence, a decline in Western self-confidence, and an increase in NATO's vulnerabilities. The author also contends that if the Soviet Union is unwilling to negotiate a significant reduction intermediate-range nuclear forces that now pose a serious threat to the West, the NATO deployment of Pershing II and cruise missiles will not only help to restore balance to the NATO/Warsaw Pact nuclear equation, but will also enhance deterrence, reduce NATO's vulnerabilities, and thus, will contribute to crisis stability in Europe. Book The Soviet Far East Military Buildup

Download or read book The Soviet Far East Military Buildup written by Richard H. Solomon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-01-26 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1986, examines the challenges the United States faced in maintaining a strong nuclear deterrence capability in the Far East without giving rise to political tensions among its allies. The Soviet aggression in the region, shown in the invasion of Afghanistan and the shooting down of a Korean airliner, demonstrated the need for a Western counterbalance, but the Asian nations were wary of becoming pawns in a nuclear power play between the superpowers. This book evaluates the meaning of Moscow’s military buildup in the global context; analyses the impact of the buildup from the perspective of China, Korea, Japan, the nations of ASEAN, Australia and New Zealand; explores the interaction of the buildup with the unresolved conflict on the Korean peninsula; and assesses the European experience with the Soviet nuclear threat and examines its implications for Asia. It also evaluates the linkages between European and Asian security.

Book Theater Nuclear Weapons and the NATO Strategy of Flexible Response

Download or read book Theater Nuclear Weapons and the NATO Strategy of Flexible Response written by J. Michael Legge and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After more than a decade of comparatively little public interest in matters of nuclear strategy, the last few years have seen a resurgence of concern about the policy of nuclear deterrence that the North Atlantic Alliance has followed since the early 1950s. In Europe in particular, this concern has centered on the role of theater nuclear weapons in NATO strategy. This report briefly examines the way in which that strategy evolved from the foundation of the Alliance in 1949 to the formal adoption of the current "flexible response" strategy in 1967, with particular reference to the role of theater nuclear weapons. It then traces the development within the NATO Nuclear Planning Group of the more detailed doctrine concerning the role of theater nuclear weapons within the overall strategy, which led inter alia to the decision taken by NATO in 1979 to modernize the long-term component of the theater nuclear forces. The report examines the main arguments that have been advanced against the current flexible response strategy, and considers the merits of various alternative strategies. The report finally considers ways in which the Alliance's theater nuclear stockpile might be adapted to meet the political and strategic needs of the 1980s.
