The exhibition presents examples of the two internally competing views of contemporary life in the Soviet Union, providing a cross section of the art of the period as a mirror of a society that was largely isolated from most Americans at the time."--From introduction.

Book excerpt: The development of Soviet realist painting over fifty years through a selection of works from Russia's leading museums. Socialist Realism was and remains an exceptional phenomenon in twentieth century art. It bore the challenge of promoting realist figuration on a scale without parallel in the rest of the world, employing the talents of thousands of artists over decades and spreading over an immense and varied empire. By glorifying the social role of art, affirming the primary value of content as opposed to form and restoring the central role of traditional practices, socialist Realism was the declared opponent of the modern movement, and in fact represented the only completely alternative artistic system. Created by the great Russian artists (Deineka, Malevic, Adlivankin, Laktionov, Plastov, Brodskij, Korzhev) the works present a multiplicity of questions, themes and formal approaches to art spanning from the last phases of the civil war to the beginnings of the Brezhnev era, stopping at the early 1970s when trends in official Soviet art took on varied and inconsistent directions such that the cultural supremacy of the socialist-realist current faded definitively. A non-monolithic view emerges, in which the movement does not originate exclusively as the product of totalitarian control and political pressures but as an evolving organism that reflected internal issues and echoed the great historic events of the twentieth century.

Book Socialist Realism in Central and Eastern European Literatures under Stalin

Download or read book Socialist Realism in Central and Eastern European Literatures under Stalin written by Evgeny Dobrenko and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socialist Realism in Central and Eastern European Literatures' is the first published work to offer a variety of alternative perspectives on the literary and cultural Sovietization of Central and Eastern Europe after World War II and emphasize the dialogic relationship between the ‘centre’ and the ‘satellites’ instead of the traditional top-down approach. The introduction of the Soviet cultural model was not quite the smooth endeavour that it was made to look in retrospect; rather, it was always a work in progress, often born out of a give-andtake with the local authorities, intellectuals and interest groups. Relying on archival resources, the authors examine one of the most controversial attempts at a cultural unification in Europe by providing an overview with a focus on specific case-studies, an analysis of distinct particularities with attention to the patterns of negotiation and adaptation that were being developed in the process.

Book excerpt: Using printed postcards this book narrates a story of various aspects of life in Russia beginning with the first years after the revolution in October 1917 to the 1980s. Despite the broad time span, the subjects in the postcards are united consecutively through narration describing how official Soviet painting Formed a holistic type of art ? socialist realism. Due to the soviet national identity each artwork had to be published. For this reason many paintings were just printed as postcards, sometimes with mini-runs of just 100 copies. Therefore this stunning book also is an insight view into the Russian soul, glorifying the people's republic and the world war 2 heroism.
