Book Soviet Foreign Trade

Download or read book Soviet Foreign Trade written by S.H. Gardner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enigma of Soviet society is nowhere more strikingly manifested than in its economic relations with the outside world. Western business people, even those with representative offices in Moscow, often describe their negotiations with the Soviets as a veritable black-box affair. Offers for purchase and sale are funneled into the bureaucracy, usually via the Ministry of Foreign Trade, where they are digested for very long periods of time. When a response emerges, little is usually known about the level at which decisions were made, and even less is known about the criteria that were employed to make them. In the abstract, at least, foreign trade decision making in the Western market economies is a rather simple exercise. An American consumer will purchase a Toyota rather than a comparable Chrysler if its price, expressed in dollars at the market exchange rate, is lower. The influences of governmental tariffs, quantitative restrictions, foreign exchange controls, "buy American" policies, and the like, are usually of only secondary importance. In contrast, the Soviet consumer, whether an individual or an industrial enterprise, does not generally have the authority to order the importation of goods or services. That authority is concentrated at the top of Soviet society and administered through a labyrinthine system of overlapping bureaucratic agencies. Furthermore, those Soviet agencies cannot respond to price signals in the same way as the American consumer can, because Soviet domestic prices and exchange rates are themselves set rather arbitrarily by governmental agencies.

Book Soviet Foreign Economic Policy and International Security

Download or read book Soviet Foreign Economic Policy and International Security written by Eric A. Stubbs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1991 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than half a decade has passed since Gorbachev launched his "prerestroika" programme to reform the Soviet Union, but the struggle between reformers and conservatives continues to rage while the final outcome, and even the goals of the programme, remains a mystery. Whatever the outcome of this transformation, its impact will reverberate well beyond the borders of the USSR to shape US security and commercial policies into the next century. This edited volume brings together original essays by US-Soviet relations scholars and international business and security experts to explore the many complex and critical issues that the United States must confront in developing its commercial and security policies for the next decade.

Book Economics And Politics In The USSR

Download or read book Economics And Politics In The USSR written by Hans-Hermann Hohmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soviet scholars have apparently stayed clear of meaningful analysis of such touchy subjects as interdependence and conflict in the relationship between economics and politics. Very little has been published on this issue—no surprise in a system that controls centrally both politics and the economy, with an emphasis on rapid economic development. The absence of meaningful Soviet research led the Federal Institute for East European and International Studies in Cologne to sponsor an international interdisciplinary conference on the subject. Contributions to the resulting book cover three main areas. The first includes the impact of traditional Russian political culture on contemporary Soviet economic thinking and behavior, the rank of economic aims in the priority system of Soviet politics, and the function of economic institutions in the implementation of political aims. The second concerns the role of political lobbies in the economy and repercussions of economic change for Soviet politics. Foreign economic relations and the USSR's foreign policy make up the third area. The concluding discussion reviews the state of international research and identifies areas for future study.

Book The Impact of International Economic Disturbances on the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe

Download or read book The Impact of International Economic Disturbances on the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe written by Egon Neuberger and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Impact of International Economic Disturbances on the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe: Transmission and Response focuses on the transmission of economic disturbances to the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, as well as the policy responses of both to such disturbances. Topics covered include external inflation, balance of trade, and resource allocation, along with the impact of the world economic crisis on intra-CMEA trade. This book is comprised of 16 chapters and begins with an overview of major international economic disturbances during the first half of the 1970s and their transmission to the Soviet Union and Eastern European countries. The following chapters examine the adjustment made by East European economies to external disturbances; external inflation, balance of trade, and resource allocation in small centrally planned economies; whether the Soviet Union was affected by the international economic disturbances of the 1970s; and the relationship between foreign trade and the Soviet economy. The transmission of international disturbances to Yugoslavia, Hungary, and Poland and the responses of each country are also discussed. The final chapter assesses how the energy crisis and Western ""stagflation"" have affected the nature of Soviet-East European political relations in the years 1956-1973. This monograph will be of interest to economists and economic policymakers.

Foreign economic links can now be set up at enterprise level. Foreign capital is invited to participate in joint ventures with Soviet firms. The Soviet government has announced its desire to join GATT and the IMF. How far have th changes gone in practice? What are the prospects for success? What are the implications of this new approach for the Soviet Union and the West? This paper tackles these questions and sets current foreign trade reforms in the wider context of perestroika and foreign policy new thinking in the Soviet Union.

Book Socialism and International Economic Order

Download or read book Socialism and International Economic Order written by Elisabeth L. Tamedly and published by Ludwig von Mises Institute. This book was released on 1969 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of international economic order is concerned with two basically different types of human relationships: those that belong to the private sphere of the individual and which are amenable to the rule of law (the "dominium") and those that are backed by sovereign national power (the "imperium"). It is very important to know which fields of human activity are subject, within a given state, to imperium and which are left to the regulating influence of market values and private law.
