Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beloved account about an intrepid young Englishman on the first leg of his walk from London to Constantinople is simply one of the best works of travel literature ever written. At the age of eighteen, Patrick Leigh Fermor set off from the heart of London on an epic journey—to walk to Constantinople. A Time of Gifts is the rich account of his adventures as far as Hungary, after which Between the Woods and the Water continues the story to the Iron Gates that divide the Carpathian and Balkan mountains. Acclaimed for its sweep and intelligence, Leigh Fermor’s book explores a remarkable moment in time. Hitler has just come to power but war is still ahead, as he walks through a Europe soon to be forever changed—through the Lowlands to Mitteleuropa, to Teutonic and Slav heartlands, through the baroque remains of the Holy Roman Empire; up the Rhine, and down to the Danube. At once a memoir of coming-of-age, an account of a journey, and a dazzling exposition of the English language, A Time of Gifts is also a portrait of a continent already showing ominous signs of the holocaust to come.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Souvenirs of the Past In offering to the public these crude and hastily written Reminiscences, I have thought it advisable to open them with one of the traditions of the renowned chief Pontiac, who exercised such an extraordinary influence over the various tribes of Indians with whom he was associated and who for so many years drew the undivided attention of the civil and military powers of those days. He at length failed in the accomplishment of his bold and comprehensive plan of attacking a chain of nine forts from Michigan to Niagara on the same day; he himself besieging the Fort Pontchar train at Detroit in 1763, but failed, an Indian woman having discovered the plot and revealed it to Major Gladwin, commanding the fort. The words trilled out gaily, and the girl paused in the act of batting an oncoming ball. That's a foul, Lun. Try again. Her bat was poised easily and this time met the ball squarely, sending it in a straight, clean spin far into a distant thicket. My word, Betty, that's a home run for you. Weng Toy looked about puzzled. Where are the other players, Autumn Gladness? Did my approach banish them? Lun is one side and I'm the other. The rest are make-believes. We saw them playing the game yesterday at the Americans' on the opposite hill. They call it baseball. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centenary Souvenir: 1909 In preparing this Souvenir in celebration of the Centenary of the Society, no attempt has been made to write a full and detailed history of the work accomplished during the long period of its existence, but rather to focus attention on the most important events that have transpired during that time. The history of the Iron Founders' Society is reflected in the struggles and aspirations of the workers during the past century. Its efforts to secure and maintain better conditions for its members have been continuous, and whatever success has attended these efforts is due to the fact that in the darkest periods of its history there has always been a remnant who were prepared to make any sacrifice rather than give up their membership, and see the Society dissolved. If any justification was needed to show that Trade Unionism has been an important factor in the emancipation of labour, the Society supplies it. Started at a time when the condition of the workers was probably worse than at any previous period in the history of the country, it has helped to remove the conditions that then prevailed, and helped to secure the right to combine and protect the labour of its members. Book The Kossuth Offering and Family Souvenir

Download or read book The Kossuth Offering and Family Souvenir written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kossuth Offering and Family Souvenir: A Gift Book for All Seasons, 1852 What shall we say then Was the apostle in jest? Was he seeking to depreciate this great seed-time of our existence Nay, verily but rather he would rebuke the presumption and the folly which, by refusing to connect it with the eternity beyond, makes it the palace of the body indeed, but the prison of the soul destined to open at a moment, they think, not into the far sounding depths of ruin and despair. We can perceive a threefold purpose and aim of human life. First, we can perceive that man has much to do with regard to himself. He is not the ideal being which some represent him There is guilt on his conscience, dimness in his eye, and weakness, rather wickedness, at his heart. He discovers the ruins of a fair creation, but no thing more the gold is become dim: the tem ple is dismantled, and strange visitants within it now haunt its shrine the mark is upon him, and his conscience might speak out somewhat in the manner of Cain It shall come to pass, that wheresoever the doomsman of justice shall find me, he shall kill me. The first aim of his life, then, has to do with himself - how to be rid of this inward accuser, how to erase those guilt stains which plague him so, how to find as surance of reconciliation to his God, that he may hold up his head in the universe, and listen to His voice speaking to him peace from his awful throne. This must be his first and his earliest aim, and in vain for this are his own sacrifices or gifts. The world, by its wisdom, knew not God. Superstition may slay its thousands of victims, idolatry may invoke its thousands of gods, science may advance its thousand appliances, and self-righteousness may wash itself never so clean, the groans of humanity are still as deep, its wounds as wide as ever they were. The curse is human, but the cure is divine and the first aim of our life must be fulfilled at the cross. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Souvenir and a Medley

Download or read book A Souvenir and a Medley written by Stephen Crane and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Souvenir and a Medley: Seven Poems and a Sketch On Thursday evening, Dec. 19, 1895, The Society of the Philistines gave a Dinner in honor of Mr. Stephen Crane. It was a large time, and much good copy was passed off into space that otherwise might have been used to enrich publishers. At that time Mr. Crane's Red Badge of Courage was selling slowly in its second thousand. After three short months had slipped past, The Red Badge of Courage was outselling, both in England and the United States, any other book written by an American. It would be presumptious to claim that a single Square Meal brought such fame and fortune to a modest, blonde youth, wonderful heretofore only as a Shortstop; for it would leave the claimant the embarrassing task of proving the rate of sale that The Red Badge would have met with had not Mr. Crane been adopted by the Philistine Hosts and duly dined. But the fact remains that the whirligig of time has brought a recognition of Mr. Crane's genius; and it has also brought a demand on the East Aurora colony of Philistines for a certain little Souvenir of the Dinner that was issued at the time, and which has been a deluge. To meet this demand we have printed this booklet, adding to the original text certain matter that may interest the future historian of American Letters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Whittier's Home at Amesbury: A Detailed Account of Souvenirs of the Poet It Contains; For the Use of Visitors, to Whom the House Is Freely Open There were only four rooms in this cottage, including an attic. To accommodate his Aunt Mercy, he built a small ell. From 1836 to 1840, although frequently coming home because of illness, or to help in some political campaign, he was most of the time in New York and Philadelphia. In 1841, Joseph Sturge, the English philanthropist, came to this country, and Whittier accompanied him on several of his missions, to Newport, Philadelphia, and Washington. Sturge came to Amesbury, and noticed how the poet was cramped for room. Upon his return to England he sent Whittier one thousand dollars, to be used in the enlargement of his house. In 1847 this money was spent in adding a second story to the eastern end of the building, and Aunt Mercy's room was lengthened, and became what has since been known as the Garden Room. The new chamber over this room was taken by his sister, and after her death'1' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
