La conclusion de Lamartine à son départ de Constantinople constitue à ce titre une magnifique leçon d’humanisme : « toutes les religions avaient leur divine morale, toutes les civilisations leur vertu, et tous les hommes le sentiment du juste, du bien et du beau, gravé en différents caractères dans leur cœur par la main de Dieu. »
