Download or read book Beyond the Lines written by Joshua Brown and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this wonderfully illustrated book, Joshua Brown shows that the wood engravings in the illustrated newspapers of Gilded Age America were more than a quaint predecessor to our own sophisticated media. As he tells the history and traces the influence of Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, with relevant asides to Harper's Weekly, the New York Daily Graphic, and others, Brown recaptures the complexity and richness of pictorial reporting. He finds these images to be significant barometers for gauging how the general public perceived pivotal events and crises—the Civil War, Reconstruction, important labor battles, and more. This book is the best available source on the pictorial riches of Frank Leslie's newspaper and the only study to situate these images fully within the social context of Gilded Age America. Beyond the Lines illuminates the role of illustration in nineteenth-century America and gives us a new look at how the social milieu shaped the practice of illustrated journalism and was in turn shaped by it.

Book The Great Strikes of 1877

Download or read book The Great Strikes of 1877 written by David O. Stowell and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2024-02-12 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spectacular example of collective protest, the Great Strike of 1877--actually a sequence of related actions--was America's first national strike and the first major strike against the railroad industry. In some places, non-railroad workers also abandoned city businesses, creating one of the nation's first general strikes. Mobilizing hundreds of thousands of workers, the Great Strikes of 1877 transformed the nation's political landscape, shifting the primary political focus from Reconstruction to labor, capital, and the changing role of the state. Probing essays by distinguished historians explore the social, political, regional, and ethnic landscape of the Great Strikes of 1877: long-term effects on state militias and national guard units; ethnic and class characterization of strikers; pictorial representations of poor laborers in the press; organizational strategies employed by railroad workers; participation by blacks; violence against Chinese immigrants; and the developing tension between capitalism and racial equality in the United States. Contributors: Joshua Brown, Steven J. Hoffman, Michael Kazin, David Miller, Richard Schneirov, David O. Stowell, and Shelton Stromquist.

Book excerpt: The Pennsylvania Impressionists is the first book to focus on the Pennsylvania School of Landscape Painting. Starting in 1898, a group of Impressionist painters began to settle on the outskirts of New Hope, Pennsylvania. Although largely forgotten by the 1950s, these artist comprised a major school of landscape painting. Today, considerable interest has been generated by this school. The leading figure in this group, Edward Redfield, was noted for his large, broadly and vigorously painted snow scenes, which he completed at "one go" or in a single afternoon. He developed a major reputation in American art, and was awarded more honors and prizes than any other American artist, with the exception of John Singer Sargent.
