Book Southwest Oregon Biscuit Fire

Download or read book Southwest Oregon Biscuit Fire written by David L. Azuma and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Biscuit Fire in southwestern Oregon was one of the largest and most costly in recent history, burning over 499,000 acres and costing over 150 million dollars in suppression efforts. This study uses prefire resource information in conjunction with postfire burn severity to generate statistically reliable prefire resource estimates for the land within the Biscuit Fire perimeter. Resource parameters such timber volume, down woody material, area by forest type, and understory cover compared between burn severity classes.

This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2002, the Biscuit Fire burned almost 500,000 acres of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest in southwestern Oregon. In its wake, the Biscuit Fire Recovery Project (Project) is one of the largest, most complex postfire recovery projects undertaken by the Forest Service. Considerable controversy exists over the Project and its salvage sales to harvest dead trees. GAO was asked to determine (1) how the Project compares with the Forest Service's general approach to postfire recovery, (2) the status of the Project's salvage sales and how the reported financial and economic results of the sales compare with initial estimates, (3) the status of other Project activities, and (4) the extent of reported improper logging and the agency's response. To answer these objectives, GAO reviewed Project environmental analysis documents, plans, and activity reports and interviewed agency officials.

Book The Use of Burned Forest by Breeding Birds Following the Biscuit Fire in Southwest Oregon

Download or read book The Use of Burned Forest by Breeding Birds Following the Biscuit Fire in Southwest Oregon written by Michelle M. Donaghy Cannon and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire severity is hypothesized as an important driver of bird responses to wildfire. For those species that typically respond negatively to increasing severity, Accessibility of high-severity burned forest may be dependent on the proximity of unburned or low-severity burned forest to meet all of the needs of breeding bird species that typically respond negatively to increasing fire severity. We used dynamic occupancy modeling and intensive surveys to test the hypothesis that the presence of live trees explained distribution of birds in high-severity burned forest in the first three years following the Biscuit Complex Fire in southwest Oregon. Proximity of low-moderate severity burned forest appeared to be important for some foliage- and bark-gleaning species. However, probability of occurrence in high-severity patches for several canopy-associates was not associated with distance from low-moderate severity burned forest. We found strong evidence that large snags (>52-cm) and large live conifers provided important nest substrates for several of these open-cup nesting species. Sprouts from top-killed hardwood species provided primary nesting substrates for early-seral associates and some species that nest in live trees or mature shrubs in unburned forest. Large areas of high-severity burned forest appeared to provide important breeding habitat for edge-sensitive cavity-nesting species. Most cavity nests were in large fire-killed or legacy snags with significant decay. In all, bird species that were likely to nest in high-severity forest also were likely to persist in the early post-fire period. Identifying the structures used for nesting by these species provides a mechanistic understanding of the distributions of many species of breeding birds following wildfire, and underscores the importance of local ecological context in interpretation of the effects of disturbance. We used intensive surveys to evaluate the efficacy of point count surveys to detect breeding birds. Most species had significantly higher detection probabilities at sites with evidence of breeding activity than at sites without such evidence. Among species, however, detection probability did not predict prevalence of breeding. Most species for which detection probabilities during point counts were low or moderate were those predicted to decline following high-severity fire. This finding highlights the importance of evaluating detection probabilities to identify effective sampling methods for species expected to respond negatively to habitat alteration.

Book Oregon Wildland Firefighting

Download or read book Oregon Wildland Firefighting written by Sean Davis and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past century, some of the world's largest wildland fires have occurred in Oregon. Accidentally set by a disgruntled cook on an English ship, the Great Fire of 1845 displaced multiple tribes and boiled wildlife alive in the Columbia River. The Tillamook Burn started up every 6 years from 1933 to 1951 and incited one of the largest reseeding efforts in the world with 72 million seedlings planted. The Long Draw Fire of 2012, the state's largest in more than 150 years, started as a small spark and raged into an ocean of flames thousands of acres wide in a matter of hours. Veteran wildland firefighter Sean Davis shares harrowing firsthand accounts that illustrate what it takes to battle an inferno.
