Download or read book Southport written by Sharon Claudette Smith and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fishing village that started its life as Fort Johnston, the town changed its name to Smithville, and then Southport, as it is known today, read the town's long and watery history. Southport is a small seaside village whose rich history began as early as 1754, when Fort Johnston was built. In 1792, it was incorporated as the town of Smithville, but in 1887, with their busy fishing village growing, the citizens decided to rename it Southport in hopes it would bring a port to their town. Much to their disappointment, however, the port was located in Wilmington. In 1954, Hurricane Hazel made landfall, and the storm surge delivered to Southport was the greatest in North Carolina's recorded history. Like most seaside villages, Southport recovered and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places today. Observing Independence Day since 1795, Southport annually hosts the official North Carolina Fourth of July celebration.

Download or read book Foul Deeds Suspicious Deaths Around Southport written by Geoff Wright and published by Grub Street Publishers. This book was released on 2008-08-21 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A grim catalogue of killings and suspicious deaths that have darkened 130 years of Southport history is laid bare” (Southport Visitor). Foul Deeds & Suspicious Deaths Around Southport takes the reader on a sinister journey through centuries of local crime and conspiracy, meeting villains of all sorts along the way—cutthroats and poisoners, murderous lovers, baby-farmers and baby-killers, burglars, fraudsters, and the so-called “doctor of death.” The book records crime and punishment in Southport in all its shocking variety. Among the many acts of wickedness Geoff Wright describes are the unsolved murder of Nigel Bostock, the double-slaying of two friends, a fatal brawl at the Shakespeare pub, the wife-killing Dr. Clements, and the baffling murder of businessman Harry Baker. His chronicle of Southport’s hidden history—the history this Victorian seaside resort would prefer to forget—will be compelling reading for anyone who is interested in the dark side of human nature.
Download or read book Southport Oak Island and Bald Head Island written by Daniel Fink and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southport, Oak Island, and Bald Head Island are coastal North Carolina communities. History abounds in this area, settled by the Smith brothers in the late 1700s. A century later, Fort Caswell was built on Oak Island and used for Confederate defense. Two of North Carolina's historic lighthouses grace the beaches of the area. "Old Baldy" was built in 1817 in a unique octagonal shape. On Oak Island, the lighthouse is modern yet beautiful; it was completed in 1958. River steamer routes flowed through here until 1925, exporting and importing goods at the Wilmington port. Today, the area is a popular destination for tourists who enjoy the plentiful live oaks, fishing, the waterfront park of Southport, and the North Carolina Maritime Museum. Southport, Oak Island, and Bald Head Island showcases the rich military and recreational history of these coastal towns.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is my personal journey which will take you from my earliest childhood Merseyside memories, both good and bad, through my very unhappy secondary schooldays to today. Dealing with an unsupportive mother and two unexpected and damaging ends to relationships, I set out on a journey of self discovery which took me to south-east Asia and latterly Sri Lanka, a country I had been drawn to for several years and fell in love with. I gave up everything to start a new life in baking heat and monsoonal downpours to teach smiling and energetic kids. Come and share my journey of life changing decisions, amazing travels, love, life, separation and inspirational experiences. I hope by sharing my stories you see life in a different way and that there is a world of possibilities out there. The only journey is the one within. Go to where you are happy.
