Book Black Prophetic Fire

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cornel West
  • Publisher : Beacon Press
  • Release : 2015-09-01
  • ISBN : 0807018104
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book Black Prophetic Fire written by Cornel West and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unflinching look at nineteenth- and twentieth-century African American leaders and their visionary legacies. In an accessible, conversational format, Cornel West, with distinguished scholar Christa Buschendorf, provides a fresh perspective on six revolutionary African American leaders: Frederick Douglass, W. E. B. Du Bois, Martin Luther King Jr., Ella Baker, Malcolm X, and Ida B. Wells. In dialogue with Buschendorf, West examines the impact of these men and women on their own eras and across the decades. He not only rediscovers the integrity and commitment within these passionate advocates but also their fault lines. West, in these illuminating conversations with the German scholar and thinker Christa Buschendorf, describes Douglass as a complex man who is both “the towering Black freedom fighter of the nineteenth century” and a product of his time who lost sight of the fight for civil rights after the emancipation. He calls Du Bois “undeniably the most important Black intellectual of the twentieth century” and explores the more radical aspects of his thinking in order to understand his uncompromising critique of the United States, which has been omitted from the American collective memory. West argues that our selective memory has sanitized and even “Santaclausified” Martin Luther King Jr., rendering him less radical, and has marginalized Ella Baker, who embodies the grassroots organizing of the civil rights movement. The controversial Malcolm X, who is often seen as a proponent of reverse racism, hatred, and violence, has been demonized in a false opposition with King, while the appeal of his rhetoric and sincerity to students has been sidelined. Ida B. Wells, West argues, shares Malcolm X’s radical spirit and fearless speech, but has “often become the victim of public amnesia.” By providing new insights that humanize all of these well-known figures, in the engrossing dialogue with Buschendorf, and in his insightful introduction and powerful closing essay, Cornel West takes an important step in rekindling the Black prophetic fire.

Book The Smith Wigglesworth Prophecy and the Greatest Revival of All Time

Download or read book The Smith Wigglesworth Prophecy and the Greatest Revival of All Time written by Smith Wigglesworth and published by Whitaker House. This book was released on 2012-12-04 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You will have the privilege to see and to participate in the most glorious and mightiest sweeping revival that has ever been known in Christian history!” —Smith Wigglesworth This revelation was part of a prophecy given in 1936 by legendary evangelist and healing minister Smith Wigglesworth to a young man named David du Plessis. The revival Wigglesworth foresaw was a continuation of the Pentecostal movement into the charismatic renewal that continues to this day. Later, in 1961, God gave Rev. Tommy Hicks a vision of the continuation of that revival: a worldwide movement in which the “Awakening Giant”—the body of Christ—receives spiritual power and authority on such a scale as has not been seen since the book of Acts. This book retells these two amazing prophecies in their entirety and also discusses their implications for the world today. The revival of God’s church continues, but it won’t be complete until every Spirit-filled believer understands his or her unique role in its fulfillment. Study these prophecies and ask God to reveal how He would use you to bring the greatest revival in history to completion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A "powerful text" (Tavis Smiley) about how religion drove the fight for social justice in modern America American Prophets sheds critical new light on the lives and thought of seven major prophetic figures in twentieth-century America whose social activism was motivated by a deeply felt compassion for those suffering injustice. In this compelling and provocative book, acclaimed religious scholar Albert Raboteau tells the remarkable stories of Abraham Joshua Heschel, A. J. Muste, Dorothy Day, Howard Thurman, Thomas Merton, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Fannie Lou Hamer—inspired individuals who succeeded in conveying their vision to the broader public through writing, speaking, demonstrating, and organizing. Raboteau traces how their paths crossed and their lives intertwined, creating a network of committed activists who significantly changed the attitudes of several generations of Americans about contentious political issues such as war, racism, and poverty. Raboteau examines the influences that shaped their ideas and the surprising connections that linked them together. He discusses their theological and ethical positions, and describes the rhetorical and strategic methods these exemplars of modern prophecy used to persuade their fellow citizens to share their commitment to social change. A momentous scholarly achievement as well as a moving testimony to the human spirit, American Prophets represents a major contribution to the history of religion in American politics. This book is essential reading for anyone who is concerned about social justice, or who wants to know what prophetic thought and action can mean in today's world.

Book excerpt: No Compromise ¿O¿er the land of the free . . . and the home of the brave!¿ Brave indeed. Fleeing persecution in their homelands, they crossed the seas to a New World in search of freedom . . . freedom of conscience . . . freedom to worship as they chose. Puritans, Pilgrims, and men like Roger Williams created a safe haven for liberty. They built ¿One Nation, under God¿ ¿a nation founded on Bible principles. But to these sturdy pioneers, freedom of worship also included the freedom not to worship at all, if one so chose. Real freedom would mean that those who worshiped God, and those who didn¿t would live together in respectful tolerance and peace. Today, this dream of freedom is under siege. Why? Because many worship no god at all, and they increasingly oppose those who do. These unbelievers would strip away the religious freedoms that our founders sacrificed to create. They seem bent on creating a nation based on their own secular atheism, by force if necessary. They mock the very idea that we are a nation under God. Those who choose to worship God are also responsible. They¿we¿have taken tolerance to tragic extremes of compromise. Instead of standing up for God and the Bible, we give too much away in our eagerness not to offend anyone. And slowly, we are becoming One Nation, under Total Confusion. It¿s time to stand firm again¿to stop compromising away our hard-won freedoms. This book will help all of us remember our nation¿s original dream¿and inspire us to recapture it.

Book excerpt: Messenger is a study of the life, ministry, and theology of Sydney Granville Elton, a man who believed he had an apostolic message for the church in Nigeria and who stopped at nothing to deliver it. It will inspire you to find your place in prophetic destiny and fulfil it. Elton played the most significant role in shaping Pentecostalism in Nigeria during its first half-century. His impact on the movement was nothing short of revolutionary and his story is crucial to rediscovering the essence that created one of the most vibrant Pentecostal movements in the world. Messenger explores the beginnings of Pentecostalism in Nigeria, bringing alive the stories of its major characters, the passion that catapulted the outpouring into a national phenomenon, and the first major crisis that marked the turning point in its early history. Elton's pivotal role from these early days, and in virtually every significant initiative crucial to its development for fifty years is told in riveting detail. At no other time-when the foundations of Pentecostal Christianity in Nigeria are being vigorously shaken, and when both the church and the nation are in desperate need of a new breed of visionary and courageous leadership-does Elton's bold prophetic vision hold greater significance to our collective spiritual experience. Messenger will impart to you a fresh vision of God's purpose and stir you to be a part of it.

Book THE PRESIDENTS NEED A KING

Download or read book THE PRESIDENTS NEED A KING written by Joy Molele and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2024-08-21 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics is often referred to as a battle of thrones. As life in the spirit, politics also has its roots in the spirit. Spiritual intelligence is essential in politics, as it is a battle of souls that determines who gains control over state resources. The number of voters plays a crucial role in elections but the spiritual intelligence of leaders and organizations is often overlooked. Governing positions are considered spiritual, with thrones traditionally inherited by kings. The book emphasizes how applying spiritual intelligence derived from the Bible will bring order, justice, righteousness, prophetic instructions, and welfare to the political system. All believers should be united to choose righteous leaders to rule over them across all nations, politically. Ultimately, the call is for every citizen and leader in organizations and societies to return to godly principles and values to gain peace, prosperity, and justice. This is how we can hand over a Godly nation to the next generation that loves and honor God in all their deeds.
