Download or read book Southern Railway In Kentucky As Seen Through Postcards written by Charles H. Bogart and published by . This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story will be of interest to those interested in the development of rail transportation in Kentucky and to those who fancy the history of the Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific and the Southern Railway. There stories of mergers and progress that made the railway for many years a major factor in Kentucky's economic health. The postcards are placed in the geographic settings within Kentucky, thus showing how Kentucky grew and prospered. The postcards in this book illustrate a largely vanished America as seen through the eyes of early postcard publishers. History buffs will enjoy these postcards; allowing us glimpses of how industrial and transportation technology advanced and of the mineral and agricultural wealth that shaped Kentucky. A close reading of this book will illustrate some of the sweeping changes in Kentucky's society during the 20th century. Some may argue that not all of the changes were for the good, but they are now all part of the fabric of Kentucky.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Louisville & Nashville Railroad (L&N) was incorporated in 1850 to build a rail line from Louisville, Kentucky, south to Nashville, Tennessee. The railroad was completed in 1861 just in time for the Civil War. L&N, unlike most southern lines, thanks to providing transportation for the Federal Army during the Civil War, survived the war with money available for expansion. Thus L&N acquired a number of southern railroads that would provide the L&N with track extending south from Louisville to Pensacola, Florida; Mobile, Alabama; and New Orleans, Louisiana. L&N's Kentucky track was served by fifteen yards: Madisonville, Owensboro (Doyle), Bowling Green, Skilman, Louisville (Strawberry), Latonia, DeCoursey, Paris, Lexington, Winchester (Patio), Corbin, Ravenna, Hazard (Crawford), Loyall, and Harlan. Within the following pages we will journey over the L&N in Kentucky via postcards, but our journey routes will not always follow direct L&N train routing.

Book Eastern Kentucky Railway

Download or read book Eastern Kentucky Railway written by Terry L. Baldridge and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007-09-26 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1865, as the Civil War was drawing to a close, plans were underway in Boston for a railroad construction project to begin in Greenup County, Kentucky. Eventually the Eastern Kentucky Railway Company would extend its main track through two more counties, Carter and Lawrence. Spanning just 36 miles of main track from Riverton to Webbville, the Eastern Kentucky Railway became a lifeline for the economic and social activities of the people of northeastern Kentucky. Even though the original plan of extending the railway much farther south and bridging the Ohio River to the north never came about, the railway struggled along for more than 65 years. Many people who grew up along the line passed their experiences to younger generations; some, like Jesse Stuart, wrote about them. This volume will show life along the rail line that lent its name to the highways now running its route.

Book Louisville Nashville Railroad in South Central Kentucky

Download or read book Louisville Nashville Railroad in South Central Kentucky written by Kevin Comer and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the midpoint of the 19th century, people and goods moved by river or muddy roads, which made traveling difficult; a stagecoach trip from Louisville to Nashville took 36 hours. Railroads were coming into prominence at the time, and the Louisville and Nashville Railroad was chartered in 1850. It was completed between the namesake cities in 1859, overcoming many obstacles such as Muldraugh's Hill, Green River, and Tennessee Ridge. The line became a pawn during the Civil War, used by both Union and Confederate forces, and endured heavy damages to survive and prosper. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad would grow into one of America's great success stories, expanding to nearly 7,000 miles of track throughout the Southeast. This volume covers the L&N Main Line in southern Kentucky and northern Tennessee, the Memphis Line, the Mammoth Cave Railroad, the Glasgow Railway, the Portage Railroad, and a branch to Scottsville.

Book New Orleans in Golden Age Postcards

Download or read book New Orleans in Golden Age Postcards written by Matthew Griffis and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2020-09-22 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Orleans in Golden Age Postcards showcases over three hundred vintage postcard images of the city, printed in glorious color. From popular tourist attractions, restaurants, and grand hotels to local businesses, banks, churches, neighborhoods, civic buildings, and parks, the book not only celebrates these cards’ visual beauty but also considers their historic value. After providing an overview of the history of postcards in New Orleans, Matthew Griffis expertly arranges and describes the postcards by subject or theme. Focusing on the period from 1900 to 1920, the book is the first to offer information about the cards’ many publishers. More than a century ago, people sent postcards like we make phone calls today. Many also collected postcards, even trading them in groups or clubs. Adorned with colorized views of urban and rural landscapes, postcards offered people a chance to own images of places they lived, visited, or merely dreamed of visiting. Today, these relics remain one of the richest visual records of the last century as they offer a glimpse at the ways a city represented itself. They now appear regularly in art exhibits, blogs, and research collections. Many of the cards in this book have not been widely seen in well over a century, and many of the places and traditions they depict have long since vanished.
