Download or read book Gender Justice and the Law written by Elaine Wood and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-11-16 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender Justice and the Law presents a collection of essays that examines how gender, as a category of identity, must continually be understood in relation to how structures of inequality define and shape its meaning. It asks how notions of “justice” shape gender identity and whether the legal justice system itself privileges notions of gender or is itself gendered. Shaped by politics and policy, Gender Justice essays contribute to understanding how theoretical practices of intersectionality relate to structures of inequality and relations formed as a result of their interaction. Given its theme, the collection’s essays examine theoretical practices of intersectional identity at the nexus of “gender and justice” that might also relate to issues of sexuality, race, class, age, and ability.

Book Data

  • Author : Robert Herian
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2021-03-31
  • ISBN : 1000371476
  • Pages : 104 pages

Download or read book Data written by Robert Herian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the phenomenon of data – big and small – in the contemporary digital, informatic and legal-bureaucratic context. Challenging the way in which legal interest in data has focused on rights and privacy concerns, this book examines the contestable, multivocal and multifaceted figure of the contemporary data subject. The book analyses "data" and "personal data" as contemporary phenomena, addressing the data realms, such as stores, institutions, systems and networks, out of which they emerge. It interrogates the role of law, regulation and governance in structuring both formal and informal definitions of the data subject, and disciplining data subjects through compliance with normative standards of conduct. Focusing on the ‘personal’ in and of data, the book pursues a re-evaluation of the nature, role and place of the data subject qua legal subject in on and offline societies: one that does not begin and end with the inviolability of individual rights but returns to more fundamental legal principles suited to considerations of personhood, such as stewardship, trust, property and contract. The book’s concern with the production, use, abuse and alienation of personal data within the context of contemporary communicative capitalism will appeal to scholars and students of law, science and technology studies, and sociology; as well as those with broader political interests in this area.

Book Legal Geography

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tayanah O’Donnell
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2019-12-06
  • ISBN : 0429760566
  • Pages : 213 pages

Download or read book Legal Geography written by Tayanah O’Donnell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first legal geography book to explicitly engage in method. It complements this by also bringing together different perspectives on the emerging school of legal geography. It explores human–environment interactions and showcases distinct environmental legal geography scholarship. Legal Geography: Perspectives and Methods is an innovative book concerned with a new relational and material way of examining our legal-spatial world. With chapters examining natural resource management, Indigenous knowledge and political ecology scholarship, the text introduces legal geography’s modes of analysis and critique. The book explores topics such as Indigenous environmental rights, the impacts of extractive industries, mediation of climate change, food, animal and plant patents, fossil fuels, mining and coastal environments based on empirical, jurisdictional and methodological insights from Australia, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific to demonstrate how space and place are invoked in legal processes and contestations, and the methods that may be employed to explore these processes and contestations. This book examines the role of legal geographies in the 21st century beyond the simple “law in action”, and it will thus appeal to students of socio-legal studies, human geography, environmental studies, environmental policy, as well as politics and international relations.

Book Constitutional Calculus

Download or read book Constitutional Calculus written by Jeff Suzuki and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How math can make a more stable democracy: “A breath of fresh air . . . a reaffirmation that mathematics should be used more often to make general public policy.” —MAA Reviews How should we count the population of the United States? What would happen if we replaced the electoral college with a direct popular vote? What are the consequences of allowing unlimited partisan gerrymandering of congressional districts? Can six-person juries yield verdicts consistent with the needs of justice? Is it racist to stop and frisk minorities at a higher rate than non-minorities? These and other questions have long been the subject of legal and political debate and are routinely decided by lawyers, politicians, judges, and voters, mostly through an appeal to common sense and tradition. But mathematician Jeff Suzuki asserts that common sense is not so common, and traditions developed long ago in what was a mostly rural, mostly agricultural, mostly isolated nation of three million might not apply to a mostly urban, mostly industrial, mostly global nation of three hundred million. In Constitutional Calculus, Suzuki guides us through the U.S. Constitution and American history to show how mathematics reveals our flaws, finds the answers we need, and moves us closer to our ideals. From the first presidential veto to the debate over mandatory drug testing, the NSA’s surveillance program, and the fate of death row inmates, Suzuki draws us into real-world debates and then reveals how math offers a superior compass for decision-making. Relying on iconic cases, including the convictions of the Scottsboro boys, League of United Latin American Citizens v. Perry, and Floyd v. City of New York, Suzuki shows that more math can lead to better justice, greater fairness, and a more stable democracy.
