This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Civil War in the United States Though a Southerner, the son of one Who fought in the Confederate armies, accustomed since early childhood to hear personal narratives of Southern dash and valor (but to read more often the Northern version of the war); it is my purpose to give an unprejudiced account of the events nar rated and of the personages mentioned. It shall be my en deaver to be untrammeled either by sectional sentiment or partisan prejudice. By balancing and carefully weighing the value of State records, official war reports, the truthful ness of personal narratives, and the fairness of historical writings, I shall endeavor to give equal justice to all;a1ways keeping 111 mind that though we have a great united country the South and North alike Wish honor to be given Where honor is due and that human nature asks that the darker places in many lives be not too highly illuminated. To have a proper conception of great historical events and of the magnitude of these events, it is necessary to have an intelligent knowledge Of the real and immediate causes lead ing to them. Where war occurs political conditions and social affairs of the time must be understood, and the wealth, natural resources, characteristics of the people, and military supplies must be taken into account, througheut the history. Book Southern Historical Society Papers Vol 1

Download or read book Southern Historical Society Papers Vol 1 written by J. William Jones and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Historical Society Papers, Vol. 1: January to June, 1876 The late civil war which raged in the United States has been very generally attributed to the abolition of slavery as its cause. When we consider how deeply the institutions of southern society and the Operations of southern industry were founded in slavery, we must admit that this was cause enough to have produced sucha result. But great and wide as was that cause in its far-reaching effects, a close study of the history of the times will bring us to the conclu sion that it was the fear of a mischief far more extensive and deeper even than this which drove cool and reflecting minds in the South to believe that it was better to make the death struggle at once than submit tamely to what was inevitable, unless its coming could be averted by force. Men, too old to be driven blindly by passion, women, whose gentle and kindly instincts were deeply impressed by the horrors of war, and young men, with fortune and position yet to be won in an open and inviting field, if peace could be main tained so as to secure the opportunities of liberty and fair treat ment, united in the common cause and determined to make a holo caust of all that was dear to them on the altars of war sooner than submit without resistance to the loss of liberty, honor and pro perty by a cruel abuse of power and a breach of plighted faith on the part of those who had professed to enter with them into a union of justice and fraternal affection. Chamberlaine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Civil War Between the Northern and Southern Sections of the United States of America, 1861 to 1865 The intention of these memoirs is to fur nish my children and their descendants, in printed form, an account of the experience of the writer during the War waged from 1861 to 1865 by the Northern States of the Union against the Government set up by the South ern States, 'in order to force the latter to re turn to the Union. During its existence, the group of Southern States took the name of the Confederate States of America. My Great Grandfather was a Lieutenant serving with the Barrons in the Navy of the Colony of Virginia during the Revolutionary War of 1776 and his son, my paternal Grandfather, served with the Militia in the war with Eng land in 1812, both were named George Cham berlaine. Having often wished they had left an account of their experiences in the Serv ice, I determined that lif my descendants had a desire to know something of my Experience in the War of 1861 to 1865, they would have it in permanent form. I have now reached a ripe old age, but my memory of the events related is clear, and I have a few cotem poraries left, who served in the same Army and perhaps some of them may take an inter est in reading this account of scenes familiar to themselves. If they find the personal pro noun used very often, they should remember that this is a statement of my personal recol lections and excuse its frequent use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Civil War: From a Southern Stand-Point As to how' well the author has succeeded in her effort the reader must decide, and to do so fairly he should keep in mind the design of the work and think calmly of the great struggle and what may be the final outcome. In my judgment, all who thus act must go beyond the pinched patriotism of sectional ani mosities, and while deeply deploring the war with its sad phys ical and sadder moral effects, honor the heroic effort of the South. Although the work is intensely Southern, its spirit is excellent, all severity being carefully avoided by the author. I bespeak for it a cordial welcome at the hands of a generous public. R. Lin. Book Young Folk s History of the War for the Union Classic Reprint

Download or read book Young Folk s History of the War for the Union Classic Reprint written by John Denison Champlin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young Folk's History of the War for the Union HE writer has endeavored to give, in the following pages, an unprejudiced and impartial account of our great Civil War. The difficulty of such a task can scarcely be appreciated by one who has not himself made the attempt. The echoes of the contest have scarcely yet died away, and the bitter feelings born of it are still apt to warp the judgment and to unfit men of either part of our country to estimate calmly the motives and acts of their opponents. Yet he who would write a truth ful history of those times must necessarily divest himself of partisanship and lift himself above the plane of local prejudice. If the writer has failed to do this, it is not because he has not made an honest effort to weigh carefully the facts as narrated by both Northern and Southern writers, and to give each side its just dues. As the work is intended primarily for young folks, the author has aimed to give, in chronological order, a plain and concise account of the most striking events of the war, enlivened by sketches of the prominent men engaged in it, and by inci dents and anecdotes illustrative of it. Though some of the stories are possibly apocryphal, many of the characteristic ones which serve to throw light upon the period and its events have been retained without any attempt to prove their truth or falsity. The writer has consulted the best available sources, and it is believed that the narrative is as nearly correct in its details as any previous work. The language used is simple, adapted to the understanding of the young, and technical words and expressions, when unavoidably used, are fully explained. The'=-illustrations are intended to be equally trustworthy, having been selected not for mere picturesqueness, but for their value in elucidating the text. The larger part of them were drawn at the time and from the objects which they represent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The History of North America Vol 14

Download or read book The History of North America Vol 14 written by William Robertson Garrett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-28 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of North America, Vol. 14: The Civil War From a Southern Standpoint The war between the States gave rise to an enormous literature which is each year increasing in bulk. The majority Of the items of this vast accumulation of historical contribution is absolutely partisan, and of the rest we do not find half a dozen that are unbiased and at the same time virile. Neutrality seems attainable by emasculation alone. Reflection will show the cause for this state of affairs; reason will demonstrate that when sentiment causes and maintains a conflict, no relation of the struggle that does not reflect the sentiment is a faithful presentation of the consequent war. Historians have found it easy to re flect one side or the other, but not to give both. Believing that the reason for this was sound, the history OF north america did not seek to present in one volume the views of the North and the South. The editor held it important that the story of the North should be told by a man of the North, while that of the South should be related by a native of that section, and that both sides should be presented by men identified with the great internecine strife. The editor was confirmed in this opinion by the fact that of all the general histories not one so presented the narra tive Of the Civil War, and it seemed most fitting that in this, the first history of North America, the initiative should be taken in recording the opposing views of sections whose struggle made the years from 1860 to 1865 the most vital in the history of the United States.
