Book excerpt: Participants from the fishing industry, provincial and federal governments and the Fisheries Resource Conservation Council participated in a regional review of groundfish stocks and selected invertebrate stocks in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. The purpose of the meeting was to conduct peer-review assessments of Atlantic cod, winter flounder, yellowtail flounder, American lobster and rock crab in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. Stock status updates for White Hake and American plaice in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence and witch flounder for the entire gulf were also presented. Papers were presented on the following topics: environmental conditions in the southern Gulf in 2001; cod consumption by seal species; size at sexual maturity, and spatial and temporal variability of lobster landings in the southern Gulf.

Book excerpt: This report analyzes research vessel data collected in the southern Gulf of St Lawrence 1971-88 to assess the effect of including non-randomly allocated fishing stations in abundance indices for Atlantic cod, American plaice, and white hake. The investigators used five methods for calculating the stratified mean number of fish caught per standard tow, which is assumed to be directly proportional to abundance and is used as an abundance index. The report presents the calculation results and compares trends in fish abundance for the three species using the different indices. The report concludes with recommendations for calculation of research vessel abundance indices.
